So it's Saturday, and I thought I'll try to start a little game during the weekend.
Everything runs fine, until I get to the IMP site and enter "XEP624" or "90210" as a code. In both cases it tells me "You have reached the maximum amount of Mercs". Which apparently is 0...
Has anybody an explanation and/or a solution?
Note the total amount of mercs in my Ja2_Options.INI is MAX_NUMBER_PLAYER_MERCS = 32
Further down the INI file states "There are no longer ini settings for IMP slots. Any slot in MercProfiles.xml with <Type>6</Type> will be used for IMPs.", and there are indeed several profiles with "type 6" in there.
What am I missing?

No, I'm still just trying to get a hang for how this version works.
My mod I'll have to rebuild from scratch anyway, since file format has completely changed (remember - it was made for build 3356!).
I did edit the Options.INI and various XMLs though and changed some settings, but nothing pertaining to the amount of mercs, at least not obviously so.

*sigh* That's what I was going to do indeed: Make a new virgin copy, try that out, and then add my modifications one by one till I find the one which breaks it. Problem was my WinXP VM didn't have enough place, and, like me, JA2 has gotten fat over the years...

I'm on Linux, the Windows VMs are so I can run all my old games. 
Yes, I could try to run it under Wine, but all attempts I made some years ago (with other games) were failures: The games crashed, or were very slow, or both at the same time. Since I'm already running a hypervisor for other uses, the sensible thing was to create specific VMs for my games.
Anyway, I added a HD to my WinXP VM, installed an additional vanilla version of 8796, and I'm ready to take the plane to Arulco.

Got it. It works now.
The problem was with the "MercProfiles.xml", although I don't know what was wrong with it. What I know is that as soon as I changed that file for the original one, merc creation worked again.
Then I copied line by line all my modifications to that new (old) file, to see if some setting caused this problem, but I didn't manage to recreate the issue: Now the game works, with all my modifications. I guess it must have been a typo or some such, although I didn't find it.
Oh well.
