I have a merc (an IMP) with the "radio" skill, and he has an item which introduces itself as "Radio Set" in his backpack (nondescript yellowish rectangle).

Yet when I open his assignment window, "listen for enemy activity" is greyed out. (I'm in Omerta A9, the starting sector, I'm just trying to check if/how the radio works.)

Why is it greyed out?
I guessed I might need to equip it somehow, but how do you "equip" that thing? The only slots that lighten up are the hands and the backpack, I tried both (holding it like a gun, and in the merc's 3-Day pack) to no avail.

In RL the radio can be anywhere as long as the mike reaches your mouth (and it has a long wire)...

Radio Set has to be worn as Backpack, not in Backpack

More Details on Radio Operator can be found in according Thread in "Flugentes Magika Workshop". Which is a good place to check for feature-descriptions anyhow.

How to get: latest 1.13, 7609 and more | 7609 SCI (eng) | Compiling+SVN

I need more details. (Didi Hallervorden)

Aw crap. speechless

It was true for the WWII valve radio sets, but nowadays they are way smaller, not to mention we're talking "mercenaries" here, they would use satellite phones or some such.

Anyway, I checked "Flugentes Magika Workshop" and got the reason, Ente says "I know modern radio units are not as big as a backpack and don't weigh multiple kilos, but I deem this necessary for balance reasons."

Still not convinced.
I personally don't think this is that much of an unbalancing feature: I prefer doing my mortar barrages myself anyway (it's not like mortar shells grow on trees), and scouts do detect nearby enemies too, so IMHO the main use of the radio operators it to prevent enemy barrages by jamming.

I guess I'll have leave in my pack and will wear it when I need to use it.

Thanks for the info!

The main balancing reason is the massively extended hearing range. If you have an operator and they are wearing extended ears and they listen in assignment, you can passively protect against any [in tactical] ambush and flanking. That is very powerful depending on sector and your playstyle.

Wait, wait, what do the Extended ears have to do with the "Radio" skill? suprised

I've the nagging feeling I missed something (once again).

Nothing, except they add to your hearing range. So, when you use the active listening portion of the radio, and they have extended ears [bonus if they are also a night ops snitch] then the hearing range keeps getting boni [ie the hearing range keeps extending].
