Any explanation what little icons (on mercs and enemies) mean?[message #361467]

A lot of small icons have appeared since 3356, overlaying the mercs' portraits or floating besides enemy soldiers after a while.

A few of them are obvious, I spotted the "Radio operator" and the "Medic" icons on enemies, but others are totally cryptic, like for instance the standing rectangle icon ("2001 monolith"? "smartphone"?) I see often.

Is there some explanation of what each icon means?

Yes, back in time there must have been forum posts with screen captures explaining them, but with time the pictures have decayed into as many "This image is no longer available" billboards... I didn't find any usable explanation.

I doubt there's a list, most of the time they'll be mentioned in their respective new feature posts. But here is a good place than any.

The Fedora hat icon is used when a merc is using the spy or disguise feature, though in the past some RPC's seem to begin with this icon by default when perhaps because they appear as civilians.

That's unfortunate. It's a little like having to read the minutes of every Court of Justice verdict to know what the current laws are...

It's even more unfortunate given that pictures in older threads have decayed, and thus you often only learn there is some icon, but you'll never know what it looks like.

Thank you, that was helpful and concise.

Although I never identified that icon as being a hat in the first place (small, over noisy background, looked like an Oreo™ cookie to me), so if somebody had just told me "hat icon", I wouldn't had necessarily made the connection.
A non-volatile icon list, which will be still there in a year or ten, is IMHO really necessary. I'd be willing to make it, but right now (as this thread proves) I'm obviously the least qualified person here to do it...

As for the enemy role icons, we have the following (from RoleIcons.sti):

1 - officer
2 - doctor
3 - sniper
4 - radio operator
5 - has mortar
6 - squad leader
7 - VIP
8..11 - unused
12 - has a key
13 - turncoat

Thank you! This really is incredibly helpful. I already knew most of the icons, mostly by giving a merc the assignment, then seeing the icon. But having it confirmed and having links to the details is going to really help those that are just discovering all the new stuff. This really needs to be put someplace easy to find.
