Both about the vanilla and possibly 1.13. I get that turning Stealth mode on makes the merc sneak and try to move without a sound, for a price of slower movement (more AP cost) and bigger stamina drain.
But, I'd really like to know... does that make you less visible? Do you have to be in Stealth mode to get this benefit? Also, in 1.13, compared to vanilla JA2, the cover display seems to be full red on almost whole distance from the enemy if nothing is in-between, while in JA2 the colors are in concentric circles (yet, the enemy seems to spot my people crawling around just fine. Are the effects of prone position and "soft" cover (trees, bushes) reduced in JA2 1.13? Because, frankly, I find getting closer to enemies without getting spotted, pretty impossible. I'm not even aiming for backstabs with knives, just getting close enough to shoot from starter weapons with any accuracy.

No, it only affects noise.
Also, in 1.13 "stealth gear" can reduce visibility in dark places, see Ja2_Options:
; This tell how much a stealth value of 100 will decrease the sight range of an enemy.
; 50% means that at 100 stealth level you have reduced the enemies sight range by 50%.
COVER_SYSTEM_STEALTH_EFFECTIVENESS = 50
but this also has no relation to stealth movement mode, just worn gear property.
As I remember, in vanilla Ja2 it shows CTGT (cover from bullets, Chance To Get Through), while in 1.13 it shows sight.

that's weird, as even in JA2 vanilla, the cover display has concentric circles of colour (red closest to enemy, then orange, then yellow, then green, each with a significant width), even in open space.
I still wonder if 1.13 decreased the cover values of trees and similar - in JA1, trees were a very useful and working means of remaining unseen before getting close.

In 1.13, you can set whatever value you want for sight cover from trees, see Ja2_Options.ini, by default this value is relatively low, can be increased to 25-35 safely:
; The cover system automatically calculates how dense an object it.
; This will tell you how much percent of vision should be decreased if the object is 100% dense,
; and the object is between you and the enemy of course, and is something like a tree or a rock (walls will always block full).
; If you put it to a realistic setting, where solid stuff always blocks enemy views,
; view ranges are too bad and on certain maps it gets hard to find people, so default is only a 50% vision decrease.
COVER_SYSTEM_TREE_EFFECTIVENESS = 15
Also check other values in [Tactical Cover System Settings] of Ja2_Options.ini
Quote: the cover display has concentric circles of colour (red closest to enemy, then orange, then yellow, then green, each with a significant width), even in open space.
As far as I know, it has zero relation to sight cover.
If you want to be able to better sneaking to enemy in 1.13, you can increase COVER_SYSTEM_STANCE_EFFECTIVENESS to something like 25, so you will be able to move closer while prone or crouched. Obviously, it works for both sides, though AI will rarely move crouched and never prone in stock 1.13
