So I've recently discovered this game, I've been playing stracciatella for a while and I found the most enjoyable way to play is the Dead is Dead mode (where you can't reload your save, it saves automatically when you quit the game or load another save) because it eliminates the temptation to reload when I lose a merc or a battle goes bad (I'm aware ironman exists but it isn't the same because I can still restart battles whenever i feel like it and try different strategies risk free). I've got 1.13 up and running fine and have been tweaking it for my next playthrough, but I can't seem to find how to play it in Dead is Dead mode like on stracciatella.

I've found a "JA2 roguelike" mod online that I think the stracciatella mode is based on, but the instructions are only clear on how to install it on vanilla 1.12, and because it creates its own ja2_options.ini file I cant figure out how to incorporate it into 1.13 as obviously that also has its own ja2_options.ini, I've scoured all the documents for 1.13 looking for "roguelike" and "dead is dead" but I can't find anything about it, so I'm relatively sure the mode is not built into 1.13 although hopefully I'm wrong about this and it's an easy fix somehow.

Does anyone have any idea how to get this mode in 1.13? I've attached the roguelike mod i found online if there's no easy option to activate in 1.13 somewhere just in case someone can take a look at it and tell me if it's possible at all. Thanks!

Welcome!

I don't think 1.13 has a game mode like that. Even though it is nowadays considerably more stable than the older versions, I'd still be hesitant on relying on just one save for a playthrough. Might just have to exercise your own iron will and not reload if things end up FUBAR ;)

I never understood what is point of these game options.

Maybe in straciatella there is some sort of sense because it probably doesn't allow player to mod the whole game in thousand different ways and essentially cheat via game settings. But still, you can always just reload or cheat - either via ingame cheats or externally by editing the save game.

And if you can cheat anyway, then what is point of this? Essentially all of these hardcore modes are all about player resolve and honesty. And if it is the case, then there is no need for technical mechanisms to prevent you to break your initial self-promise, is there? Because if you are not mentally adapt to not break your own promise then no amount of technical mechanisms will prevent you to continue anyway.

Even if this was multiplayer I prefer the other way around - additional badge/achievement for beating the game in certain way.

So really I see no point adding such option into 1.13 - nothing prevents you to play it this way yourself other than your own honesty. You can't really brag about your achievement anyway because you can mod your gameplay experience in so many ways in 1.13 that we all play completely different game and thus there is no valid comparsion. (One of the main disadvantages of having so many options to change.)

The point of these game options is to give people the choice to play the game how they want to, right? There's already 3 different versions of restrictions on saving for the latest 1.13 release - ironman, soft iron man and extreme iron man, so there's obviously a demand on restriction from saving and they must exist for a reason. For some people not savescumming ends up being an unnecessary battle against their own willpower and implementing a gameplay mechanic to eliminate that can make it more fun for them, even if it can ultimately be bypassed anyway it still adds a small amount of hassle which can still enough to avoid it - when i first tried doing a no reload playthrough it was hard to eliminate the reflex to alt + l after shit hitting the fan sometimes.

Also straciatella might function exactly like vanilla from a clean install but the data has mostly been externalised and can be edited to your hearts content much like 1.13, I don't think it's about getting to brag about how you beat the game in a particular way, more about the freedom to customise the experience to your own full enjoyment - for me some of my most fun playthroughs have involved going along with losing important mercs and having to hire b-listers to finish the job when i could have just reloaded whenever anything bad happened - if it gets other players discovering playing the game in this way then i'm all for it being implemented into 1.13.
