A fully customizable Militia would be a lot of fun, wouldn't it? I hope that they will include
that feature in the next game. It would be even better if they would let you control them,
but not let them leave town. I would take 6 well trained and equiped Militia over 20
unskilled and poorly equiped ones any time.

Unfortunately, In JA2, the Militia is computer controlled. And they can die pretty fast
sometimes. Especially when you're not around. I enjoy watching the boys and girls in blue
battle it out with the bad guys, every once in a while.

I read a post that said if you leave weapons lying around in Militia controlled sectors, they
will get stolen. I think that sounds pretty intresting. Will they actually _use_ any of the
stuff that they steal, or will they just sell it for booze money?

I have more equipment than I'll ever use, so I was hoping that there might be some way to spread
the joy.

If, for example, I "forgot" a cache of 20 suits of specta body armor, CAWS, and Medical kits in
the middle of Drassen. Would I be able to see other people use it? *wink wink*

I don't know if this requires another post, but has anyone re-captured towns from Dedrianna's
army after they overrun the Militia? Was it the same as capturing it the first time?

I really enjoy fighting in the cities, so I was wondering if letting the army recapture the towns
are a viable option. I like fighting inside of houses. And getting really close to my enemies.

Heh, I've been known to drop excess weapons/armor in militia-controlled areas, then watch battles to see what happens. Not infrenquently an item will be scooped up by a passing militiaman/woman during the battle. I get a kick out of it. Whether it gets factored into the computer's win-loss equasion I cannot say.

I do know that the battle after I dropped a ton of rocket rifles outside the Grumm mine, my Grumm militia suddenly were shooting their own rocket rifles. I enjoyed that!

I enjoyed reading your post Di^^^. It made me smile. Very Happy

Assuming that you can give your militia anything that you want to give them. What is your favorite equipment\weapons\stuff to give them?

And, furthermore, do you think that they are better at using some weapons rather than others?

I wouldn't give them LAWs. For obvious reasons.

Maybe they would do better with FN-FALS than they would with P90s?

Oh yeah! Shouldn't forget that. After all, where would my characters be without armor?

Probably dead.

LOL, the "intellectual" part of me knows that the computer automatically updates militia equipment and abilities based upon the level of your own squads' equipment and abilities. I remember an early game of mine when I first realized the militia would pick stuff up on the battlefield. I'd laid a pile of weapons and armor outside Keith's place in Cambia. Amongst the bounty was a kevlar leather jacket I planned to sell for "big" bucks. But the enemy attacked before Keith's store opened. Guess what happened to my kevlar leather jacket? Talk about open-mouthed shock! Almost as stunning as when I was heading toward a grenade launcher an enemy dropped at a SAM site, only to have a milita snatch the danged thing from under Ira's nose when she ran out of APs!

Stuff like that cracks me up. I love watching the militia scoop up weapons and armor in the heat of battle, just because, well, it's fun! Then again, most players just hit the auto-resolve button to get through militia battles. I, however, get popcorn and fresh coffee, put my feet up and cheer my militia battles as if I'm watching an NFL game!

I don't give them LAWS or mortars or other good stuff. They get those on their own somehow, and occasionally I've been surprised that a militia will yank out a mortar when my own rag-tag group would kill to get their hands on one!

Ah, this game is so addictive. Very Happy Good times.

I haven't thought about that, but it sounds like it would make a lot of sense. My characters are
usually low or mid-level, but they have really "elite" equipment.

I know, for sure, that the militia gets better equipment and abilities when they go up levels.
There are three diffrent levels. Regular (green), Veteran (blue), and Elite (dark blue). You
can get the blue militia by training militia for an extra long time, but they have to have
actual battlefield experience and rack up enemy kills in order to become dark blue.

So, I'm going to stun\knockout the enemies, and let my militia kill them. By shooting them in
the legs, or by using stun grenades. I finally have a good excuse for getting the
grenade launcher Smile . And when the battle is done, I could bandage everyone with my medics.

This may be helpful for the people who are too lazy to leave stuff lying around for them.

In expert mode, the enemy patrols will attack your cities and SAM sites _much_ more vigorously.
Which can be fun. If you've captured most of the cities and SAM sites, and you have the services
of Skyrider (the helicoptor pilot). Then you can travel from place to place and have all the hot
militia action that you can handle.

P.S.

If they have access to explosives, then isn't there a chance of friendly fire? Or of them
accidenly blowing up their own buildings and homes? I'm pretty certain that the townsfolk would
get pissed if I used grenades and explosives recklessly.

To partially answer the original poster:Once, when i was away from Cambria (my usual base) i noticed one enemy squad (9 guys) closing in from East(from Alma i think). Since 20 green militia was my whole defence force in Cambria, i just withdrew them to Cambria Hospital sector (to F8 from G9). Well, the enemy conquered the G9 sector. No big deal. Once i was finished with whatever i was doing, i returned to Cambria, refitted my team anbd conquered G9 easily. But wait!G9 was my ammo stash, and the enemy took away most of it! I mean, no guns, just ammo. And some Gas! WTF? That was surely interesting!
So, they do steal stuff hehe.

On a side note ... If you want to keep items from being stolen while you are gone or even while you are there, try this.

Find an open empty cabinet, box, desk whatever and manually close it. Now take all the items you want to save and drop them into the closed container. They will be there forever or until you open the container and use them etc. The enemy will never loot items from a closed container.

I have sectors with several hundred items that I store for later in the campaign all sorted into different containers. One for saleable weapons and ammo, one for weapons and ammo I wish to keep, one for consumables such as Med-kits, first aid, camo, etc. You get the idea. When I run low on items I just go and raid my own stash and then move the items I didnt need back into another closed container for safe keeping.

Reeeeaaaally? You could pummel them unconscious, take away their mortars, and then slit their throats... And if it was at a distant SAM site and you managed to keep the whole mugging hush-hush, you could train them again!
I am not sure if that actually works. It's possible that you can't get weapons off militia. But it would be cool and exploitable if it did, because it's only $150-$300 to outfit each militia member in the first place.

Did this once in Drassen, clapped Pablo (zdupid I know...) Militia reacted, I exited the sector, phew. Then cancelled the movement orders, back in Drassen it was all peace and love. So I'd guess (that's NOT proven, aye) that you should be able to single out an elite-militia (near edge of sector if possible, makes for easy retreat) and mugg them for their elite-equipment.

Thanks for that tip on leaving them some armour.
Actually made me think, don't forget about those goggles and all other edge-giving equipment.

To cancel movement orders you go to the map screen, issue the movement but don't advance time. Then just go do what you want (return to the tactical screen, issue different movement orders or whatever).
This is sometimes useful when you want to 'reset' conditions in a sector or just move you're team to the other side of the map without waiting for them to walk there.

(Sorry for doubling you Khor)
Right in the mercslist is a collumn that's filled with the squads destination-coordinates.
(If the squad remains inside a sector it's empty.)

Left Mouse Button issues a movement order.
Right Mouse Button cancels movement orders again.
(Stopping time is usefull for else the squad might be half-under-way.)

I almost always dump my excess gear in handy piles at a few locations in a sector, in the hope some poor militia type will pick up something that helps in the battle. Mainly armor, but sometimes loaded guns too (ammo is not so useful, since militia doesn't use it).

I'm not so sure about that stash-in-chest deal, though - Headshot, are you sure that it works? I thought that was only for containers that YOU had never opened, i.e. that if you once opened a crate then it wasn't "safe" anymore.

As for LegacyOfApathy's friendly fire: I haven't seen militia using explosives of any kind, but I do know that they're somewhat easy in their morals. In one defense of Drassen Central, a militia boy emptied his shotgun in the general direction of an enemy. However, he stood right behind a poor townswoman and thus blew her in half. And then he laughed happily, having proved his manhood (well, the normal "hey-I-killed-someone" reaction). I wouldn't be surprised if he was one of the guys getting promoted to Blue afterwards.

I don't know about the containers thing but I do know if you put a merc on top of a building and place all the items you don't want looted there they will be safe. I've never had anything looted this way.
As for being able to equip militia, sometimes if you place a weapon at their feet they will pick it up but this is not reliable. It would be cool to be able to give (especially eliete militia) weapons, armour, whatever and I hope someone figures a utility for this.

In my experience, when you attack Pablo (more than once), the militia sees him as an enemy - not you.

In my experience, you CAN steal items from your own militia.

I only do it to see what weapons they are currently equipped with. I save beforehand and reload afterwards.

I'm playing the most current version of JA2. Even when I litter Drassen with FN-FALs and Spectra armor, the militia never seems to pick it up. I even throw stuff in front of them during battles.

They sure can't take a hint, can they? Sad

If you attack one of your militia, the other ones will come after you. Try doing it in Drassen airport (hide in the office). They don't seem to open doors very often. If you hide for a while, they'll eventually leave to go back to where they were previously standing.

I still haven't tried the "KO the enemy with tranq darts and let the militia kill the enemies" Thing yet.

I would recommend an ambidexterous merc for the job. Ambidexterous skill gets rid of the -20% pentalty to hit when weilding two handguns.

I keep all of my stuff in A9 and A10. The enemies rarely go there. If you hired skyrider and cleared out a few SAM sites, it should be pretty easy to return and resupply.

Also, you seem to lose very little loyalty to killing off all of your militia.

Of couse, if you are playing as a good guy, the thought probably never even crossed your mind Wink

It might be intresting though, to fight the militia. See how much you've taught them. Feel either proud, or sad, at their use of tactics.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. It would be really nice if you could control or equip your militia. *hint hint*

"It would be really nice if you could control or equip your militia."

-Would be nice if you could vary the training-cost/equipment. Train militia for $250, giving them 6-shooters...

-Perhaps, having to equip them with guns you 'aquired'/purchased - on hard settings

-Just reading this tread makes me wanna start messing with militia. This and some gun-description, "great for target-practice on evil-enemy-milita", or something similiar. :vader:

Mental7 ... yep stashing items in closed containers always works, with never a loss of items, even if you lose the sector a dozen times to the enemy.

Try it out go to a sector that you know gets taken over frequently like a crossroads and make a closed container stash. Count the number of items you drop into the closed container. Let the enemy retake the sector. When you retake the area freom the enemy again just open the container and WOW " its just like christmas ".

When i'm bored, i often go after my own militia. Once it was usually the I8 SAM site, but recently, i do that in Drassen: 60 militia instead of 20, urban fighting instead of the same over and over SAM site, plus, Drassen mine is knocked off (no more ore) so..
It seems, my mercs are slaugtering them like chicken. Not even funny. No wonder a couple of Grays can smoke 20 blue militia with ease Sad
Ira is extra-happy, because her work at training militia in Drassen never ends. Actually, to me it looks like some sort of safari: i call over Skyrider, fly over to Drassen, whack the 60 militia and i'm back home in a jiffy before breakfast.(Cambria or Grummm).
Evil, but fun to a certain degree. After that, used to rinky-dinky militia slaugtering, i attack some badass enemy sector and am handed my own a$$ to me on a silver platter Sad
It evens out at the end...eventually he he..

I love the militia troops. I often plan my movements around whether I can see a battle first hand or not. That being said until green shirt are blue they don't stand much of a chance. I have seen Dark blue shirted veteran militia do some serious damage...

I saw a militia soldier kill one of Kingpin's assassins

And as to arming them I saw one battle where one of the Queen's soldiers threw a knife at a militia soldier. He dropped to his knees and threw it back killing the soldier. it was great.

It would be nice to be able to buy more gear for them and your mercs...oh and it would be nice if you could raise more then 20 a sector and use them to patrol. Maybe you could also hire security guards like in the first game to guard mines and other special locations.

You can raise more than 20 in 1.13. You can train more than 20 per sector, you can train veterans and you can train roaming militia. You can force roaming militia to stay in sectors adjacent to their original city or allow them to roam freely across the map.

Look in the "C:\Program Files\TalonSoft\Ja2\Data-1.13\ja2_options.ini" file for options, it defaults to 20 per sector with no roaming and no veteran training. There are also 10 000 000 other options, check the forum for tips on settings.

Oh, mercs wearing headsets are now able to issue commands to militia in tactical mode now.

This is an old thread and some of the things in here are now possible in the game. The 1.13 forum has a lot of info on the new version of the software and its options.

gpmg....thanks again sir. I really need to download the new version after this current run...(so I am in shape for the offensive)

Those improvements with the militia are a big help...especially being able to order them around in combat. Much better then just yelling at the screen.~lol~

Still like the idea of hiring some support personel from a website or something. A step below merc..a step above militia.

Hell I like the idea of guard dogs and hunting dogs

the roaming militia is just really annoying early game, you're trying and trying to train a sufficient amount of miltia but they always run off in groups of like 4-5 after you create them, to go suicide on enemy (elite) groups of 20-40.
just tried again with a new campaign and default settings, but i had to turn the roaming off after 1-2 weeks of wasting money and ingame time. there also was some benefit though in form of high leadership for my IMP and Ira, plus lots of gear from the enemy soldiers i had to kill by myself while trying to train mobile militia.
just keep in mind that militia outside their city vicinity will stay where they are and don't come back if you change it during a campaign.

I usually dump my items on Drassen airport. At the time I have money to buy many things at Bobby Rays, the airport is secure enough, because there aren't any patrols nearby at that point of the game. And even if by some miracle a big patrol invades it,I have the majority of the items inside that shipment box,so..... :naughty:
