How would active training work? I know the theory (e.g shoot a lot for marksmanship, arm/disarm expslovises for explosives skill, etc.), but apart from training explosives, the enemy seem to stay one step ahead of me, so that after drassen any merc i am training at marksmanship (e.g danny, dr.q) suddenly becomes a liability.
Is there some systematic method to getting the most improvement out of your mercs? I have gold pak so throwing knives at crows just doesnt work.

Sit more in a town you have conquered.
That Alma sector with a shooting range and Conrad in it is reported for accelerated MRK evolution on practice/student mode.

Defend from good positions you have pre-established.

Get long range guns early on,even if you have to pay a lot for them, and Gus&Lynx have great ones for the beginning.Don't be stingy. Very Happy

Marry some female girl you consider crappy ASAP to the Hicks for those attachements(make sure there's a sniper and a laser scope there!)A mrk. 70 merc with sniper and laser scopes on a Ruger or SKS is hitting!

Organise a night sortie,or a day one if you prefer every (almost)3 days.Get the most of that time before the bad mail comes.

Throwing knives improves marksmanship a little faster than shooting, and there's also dexterity to be gained.A camuflaged(stealthy) mercenary in the night gets a little closer than a night ops specialised one.
That's about all I can think of right now.
Good luck!

I always conquer Drassen in day 1 with just my IMP (with Steroid as a meatshield, Len gives me his Colt after the conquest of Drassen). Then I start hiring my team I want to take through the game.
Usually there's a MP5 leftover. So I can give that to some Merc with a crappy shot (MD). Then I take over Cambria. This usually leaves me Colts, Minis and SKSs. Even Mercs who are crappy shots perform well with rifles, and if they have a decent WIS their MRK goes up fast.

MRK also goes up if you shoot locks off.

Just a thought.

Another form of (In)active training involves loading your merc to-the-max*
Next on the map, all the time having pause-activated, you issue your squad to move.
They'll confirm.
Next you press the right-mouse button somewhere in the destination-column, cancelling the move.
Mercs may gain strength, health and even levels (higher pay !!!) with this trick, that takes no game-time to perform.

This way you can leave Strength and Health at low-level when creating your character, these are boosted immediatly after the 1st battle.

*Works well with an inventory cheat (alt-tab, windowsExplorer -> ja2\data\temp\i_A9.???,) Prepare a sector with a full-squad-mortared -> you save the game with the equipment on the floor.
(alt-tab)Copy this sector-inventory.
Pick up the equipment.
Next you issue a movement order (no-time)
(alt-tab)Paste the filled-sector-inventory.
Cancel the movement order.
Pick up more equipment.
(that's how you'll load 'em up with 1toolkit, 5 mortars, and 8(+5)shells)

Thanks. Things are going better now. Thor has 90 marksmanship in grumm, which means he completely owns. On a related topic, should bottles of alcohol from the bars alter the weight capacity so badly? One bottle of spirits can take the mercs weight held up 30%, but the next only takes it 8%. Is this a bug?
