Does Enrico's complaining about lack of progress have any direct impact on any aspect of the game? I've set up an academy and am attempting to train my lousy marksmanship merc into a squad of semi-competents.

Short answers:

Wait a few weeks, and he will eventually STFU. Best done before conquering... freeing the towns.

Kill a patrol every few days. I haven't tested the exact math. Every 3 days, two if you are paranoid.

avoideverything :

"Any battle counts. ... If I suspect that Herr Chalabi might be getting sore that he's not being re-instated fast enough, I send one merc out into the wild to find some baddies & shoot one, then bug out. It seems that's enough to satisfy the Inconsistant One."

The very best way to raise your stats, outside of cheating (And what counts as cheating is best left up to you.) Is to use the skills in question.

(I went into a lengthy discussion about ninjas. Which was pretty awesome, but unrelated to the topic at hand).

Marksmanship is easily the easiest skill to raise. Shoot people inna de face. If you have a rifle that can shoot up to 25 meters and you slap a sniper scope onto that bad boy, you've got the perfect training tool.

I turned Bull into a mechanic! Granted, he had 5/5 when I told him to repair. But he got the job done. Because I forced him too ^^

Medical is the same way. If you use someone to bandage\preform first aid after every battle. And make them doctor the patient for the days afterwards, they are bound to develop some form of compentency with it.

Your characters don't have to be an expert in everything. Though sometimes you'll wind up doing that anyway.
