WOLF !
Perhaps Shadow is a better choice...
But Sanderson does it all.
"Nobody does anything like I do" sais it all. Such a good temper and trainer.
I say we make a contest for the most popular AIM hire here.

Wolf is a great hire. I am stuck in a rut where I cant help but hire the same mercs every game Smile They are:

Wolf
Dr. Q
Spider
Grunty
Blood

All cheap, all fast learners, all will be amazing killers by mid-game.

UC has screwed up my habits with the changes to the AIM mercs argh! Smile

Of those favorties I might put Wolf as #1 if he had lockpicking/NO instead of NO/teaching. Given that, I would probably go with Spider or Dr. Q for my #1 merc of all time considering money, traits, stats, etc.

I know, a lot of people shy away from Spider due to her low agility and strength, but I dont find it to be a problem, and agility raises fast given the right opportunities.

Wolf won a special place in my heart the first time he said:" IT WASN'T THAT CLOSE!", after Ira and Fox miawled something about a bullet passing by...
He never left, since.
I'll say it again, whatever more times needed:
WOLF-FOX-GRIZZLY-LYNX is in my opinion the best balanced & available team.

Yes, Magic is the fittest.Reliability should take that into account. He opens doors. He's not a nurse, though!
Just listen to Ice when Magic dies...
I do think he's the most capable of them all.He could even be self-sufficient.I mean he's ideal for solo missions.
Even better than Scully!
But that doesn't change the way I feel about Wolf!

Nah, best hire is Thor. He is one of fastest learners and has GREAT physical attributes. He gets very accurate very fast.

Also i get Blood... now that is one killing-machine. He interrupts everyone and kills anyone with anything in one turn.

I'd also have to say Magic is the best all-around merc. His lockpicking skills, marksmanship, and high interupt capabilites make him ideal as a point man. He also repairs stuff fast!

Oh, and 2 points on agility- nothing a couple of nights with Foxy...can't fix...
Feels great to have him around!

Wolf is good. Too bad he caught a few bullets and died.

Magic is great. Scully is good, I've got him toting a Minimi.

I really like Grunty though. He's not the best merc, but he is great for his price.

Cougar kicks ass.

In my games there's one rule:NOBODY DIES!Not under my command. And not if I can do something about it!
Not even the AIM members I don't plan to ever hire.If I get the message about one having died in action bravely, while fighting in a remote country,I get mad. Then, I reload the game and leave all "unavailable"(jack ass employed) mercs messages on their machines:they'll call me to ask for a job.Bare with their constant mails, just don't let them dye...

Wolf is a nice mercenary and pretty cool Smile However, after playing JA2 for some years now, I find using mercs with the Night Ops skill has the bad taste of cheating Wink
Magic definetly is the greatest of them all. After Mike "Gonnabecoldsoon" has been dispatched Magic is a hot candidat for becoming AIM's new No. 1.
I wonder that Gus has not been mentioned in this thread. Actually, he can do everything. His only significant weakness is the permanent repetition of the word "Woody" (after he kills Mike he promisses to stop that; however, he doesn't). His low agility is compensated by his high level: I sent him in the building in H2, and he interrupted everyone, including the elites! In my judgement the only candidat that might challenge Magic as No. 1 Smile
Back to Magic: Raven has a Medical-skill of 5, however, this is quite sufficient to bandage two mercs in combat. Compared to her skill Magic seems to be a quite able medic.

Since I started this storm:
Try this:create IMP char,go recruit Ira.Put them on training without trainer, for as much as you want,or rather till they reach 85 in every stat. The mercs from AIM and MERC will go on another missions, you won't loose them(send messages, but IPSOI this can't be done for MERC members),everybody will get reliable for their job-speciality,they'll have ridiculously high stats.Gus will, eventually, have great agility
For some reason the ennemy doesn't raise to those levels. But some of the AIM members will be beyond your means early on...
Used this cheat only for the 8000+ game.Pays off...

WOLF is my boy.....fixes gear...fixes troopers, and trains militia and always fits inside my budget.

I am a rifle man and simply use the troops I start the campaign with until the end for the most part. Mercs like Scope come into play later on in the fight. I try to cut some people but for the most part I like to keep the crew I have....It is like dumping great team members just before you get on the plane for the World Series.

Wolf is also great at higher levels because of his good physical stats and teaching ability. Once he gets to like 70 in leadership he's great at training people in health... he can even train flo up to 70 or so.

Hm,Doc,would you mind elaborating(explaining) that?
IPSOI a level 1 trainer is just as valuable as a level 10 one, cause he/she can only train someone till he/she reaches that number minus 10 in that stat, like this: a health 95 or more merc can train another to 85,and so on...
It also depends on the number of students,a teaching expert might teach 8 or more in a stat, but what's that worth when you have a low wisdom student or an already knowleadgeable one, that can't be taught more than 2/2 ?

Wolf is a good choise, and Magic(but expensive). But my favorites are Thor and Trevor. With my IMP they make an exellent team able to use stealth and a great strike force. I have to confess that I have never hired Magic. Maybe I should do that before posting this:)

I know that Wolf is an effective teacher from the beginning but not all of his skills are where I want them to be. By the time he reaches higher levels he usually has the same stats as Scully (except wisdom) and is still cheap enough where I don't mind putting him on training duty.

You want the best physical trainer,I guess. My IMP char never needs training in physical stats, they increase much harder than MRK,MED,EXPL,MECH!Of course,I make him "practice" in tactical screen...
Hire Magic,or,even better:SHADOW-he has 95 in everything that matters...in combat. After the battle, well, you'll have to train him!

Scully, statswise is a hell of a merc + he's got the wisdom. It's just that his knifing-expertise doesn't catch my fancy when compared to his price.

Fav. Merc? (I've allready mentioned Magic plenty, haven't I) ...has to be Magic. ("Smooth" comes to mind sooner)

Well I go for the first 3 every time. they work together well and by the time I reach Grumm thier stats have risen considerably. With Wolfs mech stats, Foxy's medical, and Grizzly's strength and heavy weps. I also go for Spider due to her wisdom allowing her to learn quickly. Lynx Comes in later as funds allow or when I've lifted Kingpins stash.
My other choises are Trevor, locks and explosives and Blood.

Most reliable? I am partial to Shadow. He is always the first elite merc I hire. Maybe it's just because he's cool.

Wolf is great. A good general "all-round" type. He can do it all, and is relatively cheap as well.

Still, if I had to hire ONE merc, it would be Raven. Her MRK and skills (NO/AW) make her an extremely efficient pointman, the perfect companion for my IMP.

Hm,that blonde babe again?For a level 2 merc she's too expensive,my playing style doesn't include so much burstfire,and she's not agile enough.
Yes,played with tandems, only hiring one merc from the beginning to the end, plus the locals.Shadow,Raven,Trevor were for me the ones to pick for the "only hire one AIM" theme.
That ONE,in case I'd only hire one, would be Shadow for me.He's decent enough to wait for my IMP char to surpass him in experience level till he gains one,and his fees increase-never understood why, cause in that tandem with IMP he achieves about the same number of kills. Not the case for Raven, who's not wiser but somehow always gets too expensive for a level 5+,so I usually replace her with Cougar.
But again,I hire teams, not individuals, and I prefer at least 3 mercs liking eachother, cause those comments and reciproque praises have become something I cannot enjoy the game without.

She may be pricey, but if you are only hiring one merc, you have plenty to spare. Her level goes up pretty fast, she usually is my second highest level merc after my IMP. Your comments about agility are accurate though, and if you don't subscribe to burst, then I guess she isn't for you.

I know you do this already but I'll mention it again...you can hire mercs multiple times while they are low level, thereby getting them while they are relatively cheap. In that case, her price at higher levels is irrelevant.

Like you, I also prefer teams, but also like you, I do the initial assault solo for economic reasons.

Me too. For the reason I give 35 in MKS to my IMP, so he/she needs some easy solo firefights to get to the 55s, where he/she is good enough to get betetr & better. I take Drassen with IMP + Ira. Faaaar enough. Once it's done, though, you need more people to make the job(unless you don't care reconquista by the Queen).

I always pick Raven, but this time she went far too far. Her contract is almost over, and she asks 120.000$ for 2 weeks, or 11.000$/day. Now, that is ridiculous.I like better HI-lvl HI-stats Hamous than that overpriced blonde.Or Igor. Her starting level should be like 5 or something, or she should be cheaper...or i simply should hire her at day 35 when im swimming in cash and hire her for, say, 3 MONTHS LMAO Smile

I always seem to hire Fox and Wolf. Since I'm not big on Night Ops I changed Wolf's skills to Heavy Weapons + Lockpick for Urban Chaos (if the modders can change him, so can I Smile ). Hiring Lynx at the start is great for saving ammo (no wasted shots) but almost makes things too easy.

Fox is cheap, and her wisdom turns her into a shooter in no time (by day 10 she reached 96 MRK in my current UC game), plus she's a decent medic and militia trainer.

By the way, do you know if there's any merc whom Blood likes and comments his actions?

Just to make the game more colourful.

Ice admires Grizzly's actions, but does Grizzly admire loudly someone despite Shadow?

The same question about Ice and Wolf: Whom do i have to hire to hear their comments/to hear comments about them?

That's ok, i just wanted to know the cases where those mercs sometimes start talking admiring their friends, since it doesn't happen in all of the 'relationships' you listed.
By the way how it is known they like each other if sometimes they don't have lines regarding their friends? (Eg. Grizzly never talks about Wolf, but the relationship guide says he likes him - how we know that?)
