 Thats a tough call but I'll base my answer on the one merc who has been on every starting team I have put together. Grunty. A good example of an all around good general merc to have.

Close second would be Wolf. Good lines, comes with a good weapon, is built like a brick outhouse..very strong presence.

 I'll go with Buns. Funny from a danish perspective, her accent is anything but danish and her name isn't danish. But I like her anyway - she's cheap and increases skills fast.

You musn't of used Igor much is he ended up like Ivan does at the start. Ivan starts at lvl4. And in my current game I have both Igor and Ivan and I have to purposefully put Ivan in direct fire so he can rack up as many kills as Igor. Pisses me off when I have to put Igor on a leash so he doesn't outperform Ivan.
Roughly day 30 now and Igor is lvl6 and Ivan is 5.. trying my damnest to get him to 6.
Must be the way I use them because Igor makes a wicked stealth merc and can run with the night ops boys if you spare him a set of UVs. Ivan is my badass with 7.62.. heh.

 Buzz! Runner up, Ivan. Cool personalities on both of them.

I also like Gumpy and Igor. Gumpy I keep around for fun. He's just funny, I let someone else do the shooting, I keep him around for comic relief and carrying spare magazines and things. Igor's funny as hell, too.

With a sniper rifle Raven is downright lethal and Gus makes a perfect sniper-partner with her. Sometimes he made shots Shadow missed. He is pretty good at killin right Woody?

This my first time thru the game, but I'm loving Raven right now. Marksmanship is sitting at 97 and for some reason she refuses to shoot anyone in any place other than thier head Good thing she rarely misses.

Raven and my custom merc both have stealth/nvg's....just not fair fighting at night it seems lol

 hmmm thats a hard question. well i loved Kelly and Spike from DG but since they didnt make the cut for some reason...... anywho i cant decide between Thor (he gets to be a badass with a little training)Shadow ( the camo gives him the coolest look) Trevor (ah mate thats a right fine trap!)or Old Man Len (a badass to start with and not too expensive) and since Mike is an enemy now hes out. I'll go with Thor this time halfway throught the game hes better then even the elite mercs. So Thor it is.
