Danny would be my pick. He has great health and agility. He's a fantastic learner. All around the best doctor money can buy.

Agreed

I've just started using him more often, and he's amazing. Currently got him on point with two fully upgraded Mac 10s, my IMP (AW expert) with a C7, Iggy with the G11 and heavy weps and trevor with the CAWS for locks and explosives. Quite a nice combination, I must say!

Danny isn't underrated in my book, but I think you're right that he doesn't get nearly the recognition he deserves. When I've used him (hiring him from the beginning), he almost makes the game too easy after awhile, and he hogs most of the kills so the other mercs don't get much experience.

How about Red? It seems like nobody ever talks about him. He's cheap, and he starts at level 4 with pretty good marksmanship. With both explosives and electronics skill, he can disarm any trap. He makes a good mechanic with a little practice, and he's a good militia trainer. You wouldn't want him for your point man, but he's very useful for what he costs.

I think Bubba is also very much underrated - probably because people think he is annoying. He is also very inexpensive and starts at level 4 with good marksmanship. He is extremely strong, so he is good for carrying mortars and other heavy things; and he's a decent mechanic. His low wisdom doesn't seem to have much effect on learning from combat experience; I think it's more of an issue with other kinds of training.

Have to admit, I've never used Danny. I don't remember why really (perhaps he doesn't get along with one of my 'essential' mercs).
My vote would go for Len. I know most people are very irritated with the fact he doesn't gain ability points or levels. I hate this as well but even when I didn't fix it with Proedit I found him useful till the end of the game. Bear in mind that his price never raises either.
Red sleeps way too much for me but is otherwise a very good pick.
I like Bubba a lot. He cracks me up. But since he has 0 Med I only use him when I have a personell shortage and this almost never happens nowadays.

I'll have to vote Igor, for most underrated: good-great mrk, wisdom, great physical stats.
I don't use Proedit. But I must agree it's better to use it than punch cows, throw knifes at crows, use knife on the robot-waisted time.
Grunty is more useful though,he brings decent equipment, and night ops and heavy weapons, plus the fact he has the same colour as the rebels, make him a great hire.
Bubba,Buzz or "1-day Steroid-leaves tool kit and lockpicking kit" never make it in my teams.

Spider. She learns extremely fast, and good at night ops and obviously a great medic. I got her up to 100 marksmanship in no time.

M.D.'s underrated in my books. With such a high widsom, he rocks once his marksmanship gets up there ... My best game ever in Unfinished Business was with just him and my IMP merc on Ironman. ... I thought that there had to be some kind of glitch - we blew through the game in no time flat.

Maddog. He may be low-level and possess low Mrk, but once both are raised, he proves quite a powerhouse with his absurdly high AGI, DEX, and HT.

Yup,nothing and nobody compares with him!But I don't think anyone underrates him.Usually trying to recruit him on day one.He-he...absurdly high...
By the way, ever tried to raise his wisdom, via plant-detrap mines then TNT?Even with EXPL at 99 and level 7 it's still an exploit!

For me it's Buns, when I started playing JA2, I took her for her low-price, good MRK + Wisdom.
...But I can't recall the last time I hired her.

I have to disagree. And not thinking only about Vince, who beats him (+ teaching ability, has explosives, mrk reaching 80 fast in the versions allowing knife throwing at crows, but very low AGI).
Dr.Q proved to be the fastest learner in my games, mainly because he has a trainable(with mines) explosives skill. Two levels of experience that can be gained this way more than compensate for the slightly lower health and agility(still over 85),don't you think?Plus he's also the only one amongst the doctors,I think, who beats cows-if you're into that kind of training, that is.

Ira.

She can do everything (Mec, Med, & Expl) plus she can train the other merc's very quickly since she is an expert of teaching. She has good wisdom and can excel in all areas. Best of all she's free.

In WF I have her and my IMP guy train til everything is 85. Then we hire Flo & Gumpy and train them.

Ira rocks!

Fun topic!

Given that Spider and Dr. Q have already been mentioned I am going to throw Grunty into the mix.

This guy is CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP, learns fast and is NO/Hvy Wpns. By end game he is on my main NO Squad with my IMP, Spider, Dr. Q and Wolf - all of whom learn fast, have NO and are amazing killers by mid game.

I don't go ANYWHERE without Nails on my team. His biker-dude personality cracks me up, he's good at opening locks, and can handle point. Nails and Wolf are constantly on my assault team.
He gripes about tunnels, but generally makes a mess of their occupants.

I also have to say MD, before i use to look at him and think "bah theres better medics out there" then in my most recent game i've given him a barret (DL mod) with a sniper\laser\R&S and he's racking up kills, also good for sneaking up behind people and removing their voice boxes Smile

Ever since JA2 demo i've NEVER liked gasket (or his accent for that matter, no offense to anyone with that accent) his 0 medical and "piss-poor" marksmanship has stoped me from hiring him, i may give him a chance though, what skill\s does he have?

I have to say that i think lynx is OVERrated..he has 99 mk but has missed point blank shots before..but thats not the only reason why

Even if they've already been mentioned, I'd say that Thor and Danny are definitely the most underrated mercs. They get XP so fast that by mid-game, they're both unstoppable killing machines.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Meltdown yet: she's good at the beginning because of her ambidexterity and through to the end of the campaign because of her heavy weapons skills. A keeper!

Great wisdom (xp/trainable), good physical stats, funny over-the-top personality (maybe not for everyone!), great price!

Plenty of other great underdogs too: Barry, Stephen Rothman, Igor, Red... etc.-- but a number of you have already mentioned them!

Well a lot of people have mentioned him but Danny is probably the most underrated merc. His sucky MRK is no problem, ambidexterous mercs with good WIS always seem to get a shot in somewhere, so their MRK rises very quickly.

Grizzly is a solid member of my team. He's great for carrying the heavy gear and takes quite a kicking and keeps going. I tend to keep him at a distance and give use him as long range fire support which helps jack up his markmenship.

Danny was coming on great in my current game right up until he got blown away taking Alma! Oops!

Haywire. Once his MRK gets up a bit he's a dab hand with a LMG and he's not afraid of anything. His morale is usually 'great' as long as he gets to shoot. Plus his 'kill laugh' is really funny.

I like Haywire as well ... has similar qualities
