Blood really does well if you get him early on in the game. His agility is great and he's not a bad shot for a lower end merc.

I think - Bull Smile I've played with him only once, but till the end. He was in my first team (with IMP merc, Steroid, Grizzli, Buns). And I must say, all these mercs although very cheap, are great! Smile

Igor by far.

1) Some of the most hilarious quotes in the game

2) Stealth/Night-ops makes him a beast on night missions, great spotter

3) Cheap early on with great wisdom. You can bring his marksman skill up to 90 extremely fast. I also trained up his med/explosion early on and now he is decent all-arounder.

B-B-Bubba... IRRC... He fixes stuff faster than Barry, he gets the 1.5 extra LOS on nighttime that Night Ops mercs get, although he only have H2H skill and he shoots better than his MRK says...

Flo... Learns fast and since she works with weapons, she can deal guns more efficiently than most mercs of JA2, for example, she can sell weapons at higher prices (around +30%) to other dealers, like Tony...

Yup, she can sell guns at higher prices to other dealers, including Raul on Unfinished Business...

Len and Wolf (I guess) also have this "hidden" ability, but since Flo is dirt cheap...

Bubba doesn't get a NO bonus. Also, NO bonus is 1 per trait lvl, not 1.5. Also, unlike what I've heard some sites say, night ops doesn't get more out of night vision goggles than non-NO people do. Tested on vanilla JA2.

NO = Night-Ops.

That should have been easy enough to understand considering the fact NO is a common enough acronym for Night-Ops.

I could say stop spreading false rumours please, but I won't because I am that nice.

Most underrated merc?

underrated by AIM/MERC:

- Igor (almost too low price for one of the top performers)

- Danny (he only needs marksmanship training and a few level ups to be a monster. Too cheap)

- Grizzly (one of the most useful soldiers, for only 6000/2 weeks?)

underrated by players:

- Larry.
Definietly a bargain. (level 4, medic, bomb dude for a small fee of 9800 per two weeks?) can understand that few people think he is a risk with his drug problem. I think he is the best buy from the MERC roster (a better buy than Numb and Cougar IMO)

- La Malice.
OK, he has low wisdom, but all the stats stats necessery in combat are 80+. His personality is a bit boring tough... With 50+ wisdom, you can't train his support abilities easily, but he makes a good front line soldier.

- Red.
level 4 bomb dude with teaching. Cheap too (10000/2 weeks). Besides Larry and Hitman, he has the best price/level ratio. With a bit of training he will be a good shot, militia trainer, a backup mech and a 1st class demo expert...

- Bull.
1 hit with a crowbar causes enemy soldiers (even greyshirts!) to faint. 1 hit, 1 man down! He is a good backup 'lockpicker', can carry lots of heavy stuff (Grizzly usually carries the mortar, Bull the mortar shells). His agility s.cks but there are a few 'anchored' enemies where he can easily get that above 85. He is cheap too (and has a good voice).

- Barry.
A good buy. I think he has the best wisdom/price ratio in the game. By the middle of the game he is a good mech, top lockpicker, top demo expert and marksman. It is true that he sleeps too much, and is quite boring. (and as a hungarian, I miss that he doesn't have a hungarian accent...)

Most of the cheap mercs are underrated. It is easy to get a lot of them into as good of shape as the expensive mercs at a fraction of the cost. Right now in my current testing/debugging game I only have one expenisve merc, Raven. She costs more than Buns+Igor+Grizzly+Bull together which is kind of silly because most of them are at least as effective as her.

In my current game I'm using IMP (Expert Lockpicking 75 MRK, 65 MEC to start), Igor, Grunty and Hitman to start. I picked up Ira then moved to Drassen. Left Ira to train militia at the airport, took the middle section and left hitman to train militia there. Took the mine then started working on the SAM site. Hired Flo and Gumpy once the email came and have seen marked improvements across the board.

Flo is up around 15-18 agi just sneaking around, Gumpy's gone up about 8 MRK and even Igor got some AGI/DEX/MRK training (I like to sneak him around behind enemy lines at night and take out enemies one by one who are sitting there waiting for my other mercs to appear). Definately pick Igor, Flo and Gumpy as underrated.

Well, if we're talking about the cheap "lower-end" Mercs I'd have to definitely say Igor by a mile.

Hands down. He is a god damned killing machine that has seriously under priced himself. He only gets better as the game progresses and is my point man. He's got two great skills (night ops, and stealth). I've already heard people bitching about the fact that by the time you get around to hiring Ivan, his little cousin is better than him.

Runners up would be Barry and Grunty. Barry is a great value as an explosives and lock picker (two traits useful to have in any team). His wisdom also allows him to be trained up as a mechanic rapidly (he repairs all my weapons). He's not terribly bad in combat either, and gets along with everybody. His only failing is he can't swim (big deal). Grunty gets along with and works well with the Russians (he also has Night Ops).

I'm having reasonably good success with MD in my current game. He's the second cheapest AIM behind Bull. 80 medical, and his wisdom allows him to be trained up fairly fast. I'm sure Danny is better, but in some of the higher difficulty levels money becomes a concern right off the bat. As I get more money, I'll probably switch him out for Danny.

Steroid is nice *if* you don't like Fox or the Russians. Unfortunately, I do, so I don't use him anymore.

Overrated would be Buns. Yeah, her Marksmanship is good, but she hates Fox and Reaper. This means she can rot in hell for all I care. Mad

Bull is next to useless in my mind, except for maybe the occasional need to go h2h or as a mortar mule paired off with Grizzly . Shank *is* useless. At least Flo can be used to buy/sell weapons, and Ira can be left behind to train militia. Shank can throw things....ugh.....

More recent years I found out his marksmanship goes up pretty fast despite him being dumb as a rock (Low wisdom).

If you're using the 1.13 mod, you can change the JA2_Options file in the 1.13 data folder to set whether you can hire from the MERC site on day one, among many other things.

Ahh cool. Thx. I am at work now and can't check, but I guess it's possible to tweak how quickly the "better" mercs come from MERC, or perhaps rather the "less sucky". Very Happy

This is going to be one funny campaign I guess. The counter strike in Drassen is going to be a nightmare. Biff is going to be so afraid. LOL!

I think Miguel is one of the most overlooked & underrated Mercs and here's why:

In Vanilla, you don't get him on the team till you're almost 3/4 of the way through the game. However, he's awesome [and free]. Night ops and dam good at interupts plus some serious time out in the bush killing people and pretty soon he's a veritable Terminator! Even Carlos isn't too bad either and again a bit under-rated. He's better at supporting Miguel with a good scoped rifle as Miguel sneaks forward with throwing knives and an AKM.

In Wildfire you get Miguel nice and early which, tyo me at least, made more sense and he becomes even more deadly. Him with my IMP [N.O & Stealth] pretty much go out on 2 man patrols to thin out the numbers of roving army patrols. Very effective.

Igor is definitely very underrated. I started using him simply because he and Ivan make a great team, and Ivan is one of my favorite mercs... even tho he is a bit too expensive.

neways, Id say prolly Fidel. he is great with bombs and annihilates in close combat. I had him nail people 5-6 times in a row in the head in full auto with the Commando, and he rarely if ever misses an interrupt. I think he's the best pointman you can hire.

and, also, Maddog. He's definitely my favorite character in the game. Even if he starts off as a really half-assed shot, he becomes real good very quick, and his physical characteristics are probably the best in the game... even though he's dumb as a Bush.

Ira !

Egg face and over-irritating voice but:

*You cant get cheaper than free!
*good militia trainer
*back-up medic
*She has low Str, but its the quickest and easiest stat to raise.
*Her wisdom goes up the roof quick when training militia
(when no militia to train, just have her practice explosives/mech/medic and it goes has fast)
*Low Mark, but if you let her shoot from the begining she will get decent early enough, and with her high wisdom she will learn quick from any sharpshooter too.

Other than her i'd say Buns,
shitty accent/attitude/personnality and hated by many other mercs,
but she's dirty cheap, very fast learner and potential sharpshooter.

That's OK, sargeant. Smile It's precisely because she is THE underrated (for you too) that you use her like that. IF it wasn't for that ear thing that fills the glass...you'd use her as your wife, wouldn't you? Things being as they are, you use Ira as a mule.
She's "arulcan" anyway, so feel free to carry on: we're in JA2, not life.

Me, I remain with Igor. He's got everything a man should have, except the "right birth" and that thing called money that should accompany the very intention of hiring him. But hey, I payed his uncle too, and always in advance. Very Happy And dang! not even that makes him loose temper. You pay him without uncle and you find out it's even worse: money loose meaning, both for employee and employer.
Morale:frienship's too expensive for real commanders.War too.

Just for the record, shes (Ira ) potentially the BEST militia trainer in game. She has Training Expert skill bonus plus RPC (Rebel) bonus when training which is best possible combination. All she needs is to get her leadership trained up. You can't make IMP character that will best her once you get her leadership to higher levels.

yup. thats like her purpose in life when I play. I always move her in after I capture a sector, and use her to train militia. and then, I tend to send her to the next sector, call for reinforcements and run away. "Attack my minions!" But if my actual team if fighting in the city, I use her to carry ammo from the airport.

I wouldnt say Ira is underrated for me, I just dont use her in combat Smile because my last game, she trains faster then Reaper, Maddog, and IMP combined...

In fact, I rarely if ever use female mercs, tbh. I used to use Fox or Spider as medics, but then they got replaced by Danny - imo the best medic you can find. Then Raven got replaced by Reaper, as imo he's all around better. And Buzz just got kicked off my team cause it seems like she also doesnt like Ivan, or maybe all guys(?). Then my usual lineup - Ivan, Fidel, Maddog, IMP, and Igor.

edit: another good use I recently discovered for her, is train my dumb merc's wisdom. Like, Maddog's for instance. she actually brings it up quick.

Ira got to have a hidden pistol quality because she gets a lot of low odds hits with her .38.
She is as good with that as my IMP with the 10mm smg with aimpoint. And he has a marksmanship of 85.
but she should start with a russian gun from the start to keep the russian armed resistance.

I like steroid but dont think he is underrated. I use him im almost every game. but his voice acting pisses my gf off so now I have to play the game with headset Smile

it seems like some of the dumb mercs actually improve very quickly. Like I had, Maddog, for instance go up from 66 to 87 Mrk taking 2 cities. And he levels quick, too. He is in fact higher level then my IMP, even though he has less kills, and by the end of taking Cambria's sam site, he is level 8, same as Reaper.

But Hamous on the other hand starts off just about useless, and he stays that way.

You guys keep saying Shank is useless. Well, he's actually not too bad. He is my grenadier in training. The only huge downside is his terrible physical traits. Well, if you have him drag a mortar and some shells (300+% load) around for a few weeks he goes up quick. (He, Hamous, and Dynamo make up my artillery guys...cause they are just otherwise useless at this point in game.) And then Ira can train his agility and dexterity reasonably fast, too.

Yeah I agree with you...I have Shank carrying a machine gun now for the final push and before that a rifle and shotgun. He bulks up in time, but frankly I keep him around for the flavor of the game. He did manage to kill a few bugs though with shotgun though.

In my current game Ira is back at Grumm training troops...The mine there is one of the most fought over sectors in this go around. With a good rifle and plenty of medical supplies she is holding her own pretty well.

She annoys the hell out of me, but she is free and as a trainer and medic she is a good deal. When you start getting rifles though she can be useful.

Flo... Learns fast and since she works with weapons, she can deal guns more efficiently than most mercs of JA2, for example, she can sell weapons at higher prices (around +30%) to other dealers, like Tony...

She isn't a bad deal really....she does hang tight in the battles and once she gets a few kills (a few hicks in the last campaign) she does okay, but sales are her strong point. I married her off to wolf in my short story here on the board.

Larry... If you manage to keep him sober (like me), he's a good doc + bomb dude with stealth skill...

Scene worse...

Haywire... He shoots better than his MRK suggests and he learns faster than Razor...

With the price you pay you could do worse.

I feel safe with Blood around. He's a good medic, can do basic expolsives. He gets interupts galore and kills well.

He is the man when it comes to blades and if you do some fighting at Kingpin's place he will kick ass. I have had games where he has killed three or more guards in a row with knife throws to the back. When you get night vision gear...see that he is among the first to get it.

Can`t understand how anyone can underrate Blood. He`s a beast.
Just look at his stats and his prize...

I have to disagree with some opinions on Gasket here.
He`s bullcrap. Totally useless. I only keep him around because his voice cracks me up.

This guy is cheap, but he does nothing but sleeping for his money. He works like two hours then sleeps the whole day, works two hours, sleeps the whole day.

I have also come to the conclusion that he must be too stupid to fire a gun. Every other merc in my squad with the same equipment and marksmanship rating, shoots better than him.
