So, you gonna give us your stats, SpaceViking?

And El Mucho, while I agree that nothing but actual combat can weed out those unable to stay cool under the strain, do you really think that nothing less could result in a JA2 Level 2? Although the Level system is a bit difficult to fathom. I mean, Biff, Barry, Raven, and Grizzly are all Level 2, and they're all over the board in terms of actual combat time. I sure as hell wouldn't put anyone without real kills to their name at Level 3 or higher, though. I dunno. Maybe I should get more humble and reduce myself to Level 1. :whoknows:

El Mucho

I'm good with that. Kinda like it. Just don't call me "Jim." Smile

Oh, sure, I don't think zero-combat experience = level 1; as you say, there are lots of factors to consider. I had myself talked into level 2, I mean, I think I'm more prepared than MD or Spider, for example. On the other hand, it's been quite a while since I've done any "soldier" kinds of things, except shooting, so I think I'd need a couple weeks of intense training to get back into the mindset (and get looking a bit more like Smert's pic Smile ) then I'd feel better about level 2.

I totally agree. You'd have to have a lot of really EXCEPTIONAL training (not paintball, lol) to even think about level 3 w/o combat experience. And even then . . .

JAPH
Maybe I should get more humble and reduce myself to Level 1. :whoknows:

Naw, if you've done four years mil, I think you're justified.

Yeah, when I play with myself as an IMP, I always do intense training before I let me into real battles. And if that pic is really Smert, and Smert is really former SpecOps, and those are accurate stats, I want to be ve-ery clear that I was not referring to him when I made that ill-advised comment about young'uns labeling themselves as Level 4. Heh, we don't need another "Gimpy"-esque character in the game though physically I'd come off better and hopefully without the annoying voice.

Originally brought into AIM to help Ivan with his language skills, Igor says: "Monk is great teacher of English and can drink much vodka!" He's pretty quiet and always the last to give up on something hopeless, Malice says: "That Monk, he knows how to make a guy crap the pants, hien? Tabernac, he moves like the mouse! But he's bonhomme and good for the laugh."

You know, it's interesting to see how different people have rated basic first aid + CPR re: the medical skill. I was hesitant to rate it as high as 10 but others have gone into the 30s.

Well, part of the problem with this whole "self evaluation" thing - converting a real person's attributes and skills into IMP numbers is the fact that the JA2 system itself is a bit inconsistent on what is "average". That's why I put that disclaimer at the beginning of my post. IMP says the "average merc" is 55 in all stats, and I used that as my model since I'm making an IMP merc. However, the actual averages of the mercs in the game are all over the place.

Here are the averages of the seventy A.I.M., M.E.R.C, and RPC mercs in the game:

HLT: 82

DEX: 77

AGI: 74

STR: 74

WIS: 76

LDR: 26

MRK: 78

MED: 28

MEC: 34

EXP: 33

As you can see, a closer approximation of the "average merc" would be 25 in LDR, MED, MEC, EXP, and 75 in the other six. It turns out that you would end up with 550 total points, just the same as the "55 points each" model.

I based my scores on the definition that the "average person" has a score of 55 in each skill/attribute. But I didn't really use this for my MED, MED, and EXP, because I knew that didn't reflect the in-game merc average. I knew leadership was low for in-game mercs as well, but I stuck with the "55 is average" on that one.

So what does a score of 25 MED mean? I'd say it means someone who's had some quality training in first aid, and has a clue what they're doing. 50 would be a "field medic," and 75+ would be a "doctor."

I view the MEC, EXP skills in a similar manner.

I think that's a fair rating. I bumped myself up a bit in MED because I made a particular study of psychopharmacology during grad school, so I have a general idea of proper doses of pain meds. I've patched together enough of my own and others' kitchen wounds that I think I have what could be called minor field experience. And, I had enough anatomy and biology study that I can generally locate major arteries and organs, so could do a little triage. But generally, I'd say yes, if all you know is 1st Aid and CPR, I'd put you around 25.

Like others earlier in this thread, I find the whole idea of "rating" human abilities intriguing. It's a complex problem. It seems to me that you'd have to rely on some kind of group consensus scoring, to get a broad view of just what is involved in the ability, and to even out the extremes you'll always get in human judgment. That's akin to what the process of "norming" an aptitude or intelligence test is supposed to do.

I'm not so sure that JA2 did this as consistently as we might like. Take the medical skill again. Gasket has a zero skill, but what does that mean? Even someone like Gasket would know enough to put the bandage over the spot that's bleeding, not randomly on the body. Now, he probably wouldn't realize just how tightly he has to wrap it, so it's not going to do as much good as it ought to. But (and this is from personal experience), unless you've opened an artery, even a loose bandage will eventually fill up with enough blood to clot and have a chance of sticking to the wound, thus stopping the bleeding, where without the bandage to cling to, the fresh blood always washes away the clotted blood, so a loose bandage may have some effect. One you remove a bandage like that, you'll reopen the wound as if you'd done no bandaging at all, where a properly wrapped one will have compressed the capillaries enough to at least close off the surface bleeding. So, you see, even an imbecile could do a little good. Just don't move until the real medic arrives, cause those surface clots have about as much strength as dried snot Wink .

Or could someone actually be so stupid (barring actual mental disability, here) that he wouldn't know enough to get out some bandages and put them on the bloody spots? Or does a zero score mean that the particulars of that skill freak you out so much that you are effectively mentally disabled? Or are we all taking a game just a little too seriously?

Nah. Couldn't be.

Smile

Nah. Couldn't be.

Is it even possible for JA2 to be taken too seriously? I mean, seriously . . . Smile

I lowered my leadership to reflect a value based on "an average person 25" in leadership, dropped EXP a bit too.

If that's true, there sure is a lot of that disease with the mercs in JA2, lol!

Nickname: Lowkey - Military days for a knack of staying below the radar and getting the job done.

A.I.M. Description: Rarely seen in the company of others, Lowkey is quiet and modest when questioned about his background. Don't be fooled by his young appearance though. He spent ten years in the United States Marine Corps as an Anti-tank Assualtman, TRAP team leader and a CQB Tactics and Firearms Instructor. He saw combat on two seperate deployments, both while he was leading a team to recover a downed aircraft. After leaving the military, he worked for a government agency and was employed as a SWAT team leader and instructor. He is known to have a coolhead in a fire fight and has a tendency to be the first man through the door or walking on point simply because he doesn't trust anyone else with his life AND he doesn't like having to rely on someone else who may become complacent and get the whole squad killed.

He recently left government service to be free of the day in/day out bureacracy and red tape and has been working as a freelance instructor at one of Americas leading combat academies when not employed by AIM. It is rumored he was seen in a certain middle eastern country "instructing" the local Law Enforcement (ie: leading a raid on a suspected bomb factory) but these rumors have not been confirmed.

Dexterity: 75 - Played piano for several years and I can type pretty well.

Agility: 75 - I move fast when I need to and I've got pretty good balance skills.

Strength: 65 - I'm no Grizzly or Bull and I've never been big on spending my free time at the gym punishing myself. I'm "wirey"

Wisdom: 80 - Spent much of my precious youth going to a number of different courses, academies and classes.

Leadership: 45 - Military and civilian experience to say the least.

Marksmanship: 95 - I shoot competitively and on a weekly almost daily basis whether in practice at the gun range or.....not.

Medical: 35 - Combat Lifesaver. GIven myself a few IV's and sewn myself up when needed. Patched up a few friends in a hotzone after the doc passed out at the sight of blood.

Mechanical: 1 - Ohhhh. You wanted a wrench? That's the long pointy thing with the cross shaped tip.....right?

Explosives: 55 - Dropped it to 55 since it's been a couple of years since I played with military grade stuff. I blew up tanks for a while in the military and learned....some tricks. Only thing I use now are flashbangs and the occasional doorkicker charges.

health: 65 - Only if resistance to illnesses is also included in this... otherwise it's around 50.

agility: 40 - I go by bike everywhere, but that's pretty much everything. I'd rather stay in bed, if someone wanted to hire me for a job that includes walking... ^^

dexterity: 70 - I play the guitar and like building mechanical stuff (i.e. improvising to get things going again)

strength: 40 - Nah, I hire a mule, if I need to carry anything heavier than a small backpack.

leadership: 25 - People usually like me, but I'm not a good speaker and can't give any commands to anybody (and I don't think Fidel would listen to me, if I kindly asked him to step aside ^^)

wisdom: 85 - You gotta balance the bad physical scores, right? I usually slept at school and was still pretty good...

marksmanship: 30 - I never shot a real gun, but have almost perfect vision and I'm also pretty good with airguns and BB guns. I guess I'd learn that pretty fast, though I'd probably dislocate my shoulder while firing a real rifle the first time... Wink

mechanical: 50 - I never learned this stuff, but usually things work, after I take them apart and put them together again with some duct tape. Doesn't work with electronics, though... guess I'll do it like Perko then: 'If you can plug it in, I won't touch it' (or better 'I will touch it, but it will probably work worse than before')

explosives: 10 - I know a few things, one should not do with explosives and which substances make a nice BOOM!, but I have no idea how to do it right...

medical: 20 - I theoretically know about first aid and that it is a good idea to stop the red stuff from pouring out, but have no experience at all.

level: 1 - Just because there's no level 0.

skills: I don't think any normal human, without combat experience could possibly have any combat-related skills at all, but if I have to take the two that fit me best, they are rooftop sniping and maybe NO...

attitude: It's kinda hard to choose one... I'm pending between friendly and pessimist.

personality trait: fear of insects... yep, the bugs would send me running right outta that cave and the whole country.

racism: nope.

good guy: absolutely.

need for sleep: 7... I can go with four or five hours of sleep a day for weeks, but nobody would want to work with me then Wink

appearance: black pants, green shirt, pink skin and brown hair, standard civilian body type.

equipment: Light armor (kevlar or twaron) and some light rifle, maybe the Calico thingy with a nice scope and some cheap pistol... I'd prefer to stay behind, cause I wouldn't be much use in fighting anyway.
A canteen, 1st aid kit, toolkit, quality binoculars, NVG and gas mask so I'm not completely useless and/or die too fast....

likes: Thor, Ice

learns to like: dunno, maybe Wolf

hates: all the rednecks and especially B-b-bubba

I gave myself stats based on the characters in the game are able to do with a given score. If I had to rate me as a real life guy I'd still know the same things. But if it were real life then I don't think my 'resume' would show enough experience to be a 'real' merc.

That said, I actually started a game with *me* in it using the stats above. I even gave me an M21 and a couple of mags of JHP ammo (I'm playing on Expert and the Queen's Elites have stuffed my ass and hung it in her trophy room, so don't tell me it's cheating Razz ).

It's taking a while to get myself to be as useful as the usual IMP I would make. Kinda like real life, lotsa skills but no expert in anything Very Happy . I took my IMP on a tour of cow pastures and made him try to kick open every locked door. He's starting to train up into something useful around day 9. Of course, I'm training militia now and my high LDR and the teaching skill will be useful.

I think I'm gonna try the cow punching and kicking open doors as my new real-life workout routine. I'll see you in 7 - 10 years. Wink

You should also include stabbing and punching tanks (cars, if there's no tank available) and stepping in and out your garden while carrying 5 toolkits or other heavy stuff... You'd look like Arnold Schwarzenegger in a few days :devilaugh:

@thefox: Wow! There's actually a woman who plays this game? Cool!

@gpmg: Your picture looks French. A little Canadien in the blood, enh? I'm playing three games concurrently now, one with "myself" on Experienced. "I" am still just running back and forth across the hills at the top of the map, trying to build up health. The other mercs are actually conducting the battles. "I" dropped in to help train up Drassen after Ira got it filled with greenshirts, that's been the extent of "my" contribution so far. Humbling, which is probably good for me. :wrysmiley:

@Shadow6: What I said about Smert goes double for you. You look like the real thing.

@El_Mucho_Muerte: Y'know, it occurs to me that I could do a liberal "translation" of your name and call you Mega-Death.
I think I'll drop my scores a bit, Shadow6 has me reconsidering. And you're right, it's impossible to take JA2 too seriously. After all, Arulco must be saved! Gonna get back to it here in a few minutes, too.

@moki: If that works, then my starting Strength must be lower than I thought. I carry too much heavy stuff (like 50 lb bags of compost, two at a time, one on each shoulder) into my garden all the time, and all I get is tired and sore. I still look more like PeeWee Herman than Arnold Schwarzenegger. :sadyellow:

Dude!! It totally works! Here's a photo of me after only a couple of hours of trashing cars and livestock around my neighbourhood:

Of course now that the cops are chasing me I should use the opportunity to boost my reflexes by letting them almost catch me.

lol! Hadn't considered that. But saying "El Mucho Muerte" a bit slowly, emphasizing each word with a poor spanish accent is strangely satisfying

I'm glad you didn't choose Meltdown. I can't think of any other merc who verbally assaults all of his/her teammates all the time. That's not my idea of tough, just obnoxious.
