First off my merc was Rowie, un original but i just wanted to play the game, gave him 70 strength, dex and agility, 85 health and wisdom and the rest were at 35 with marksmanship taking any leftover points. skills were night ops and lock picking.
when playing i would use every round of spare ammo and fire at any target to increase marksmanship, the best was to use the SW on anything locked from just within range!
my second time around i used the same stats but my merc was called Perisher

I found an old description I made of the bug, and how I fixed it with a hex editor:
The All In One editor (AIO 1.02) contains version 1.03 of Custom Merc Editor, which has a bug: you can't save a custom merc to use male voice #2 (voice 52). It automatically changes the voice to voice #1 (voice 51) when saving).
There was a complaint about the program on the forum, but no fix. I think whoever wrote the program has since moved on to other games.
So you could edit custom mercs, but you could only have five unique edited custom mercs in the game. (using voice files Male 1 &3, Female 1,2 &3)
Or you can use a hex-editor.
The very first byte of the IMP.DAT file represents the voice number.
For example, a custom merc with male voice #1 has "33" in the first byte. Hex 33 = Dec 51 . The character slot that corresponds to male voice number one is slot 51.
Male voice #3, which corresponds to character slot 53, has hex "35" in the first byte.
And female voice #1 (character slot 54) has hex "36" in the first byte.
So all you have to do is use a hex editor on whichever IMP.DAT file belongs to the merc who will use male voice #2 - after using the cUSTOM MERC EDITOR program.
Using the IMP patch: I set up a separate folder for each of my favorite custom mercs, each having a different voice file #. Each file had the same name - IMP.DAT
Using a patched copy of the Gold Pack 1.12, I:
1) copied one of the IMP.DAT files to the "Data" folder of the game.
2) started a new game (with the IMP.dat file for one of your custom mercs in the Jagged Alliance 2 Gold\Data folder.
3) read the e-mail to get to IMP website in game
4) typed 90210
5) hit Alt-Tab and returned to windows
6) copied another IMP.dat file over the one in the Data folder
7) repeated steps 4-6 until I had all of my custom mercs loaded.
