Yes, for real. Using DOSBox it is entirely possible to link up four players anywhere in the world and play multiplayer jagged alliance. I've been playing three-player with a local friend and a friend down south in florida, and while the game runs a little choppier than singleplayer, the netplay seems more stable than it was on win98 machines that were physically networked to one another.

I was going to write up a little tutorial, but someone beat me to it, for the windows version at least.

http://www3.telus.net/miklogik/deadlygames/index.htm

The most important bit - or at least the bit I was missing when originally cocking about with the idea are the commands to start the IPX tunneling service. You choose one computer to be the server, and on that machine you issue the command

IPXNET STARTSERVER
On all the other machines you then do
IPXNET CONNECT
the clients should each get a message about IPX tunneling connecting successfully, and then the copies of Deadly Games will act as if they are on a local IPX network together.

The turn-based nature of the game naturally removes the importance of ping to success, so you should be able to have fair and challenging games, even with people in other countries.

Some discussion about this is taking place here.

greetings fellow jagged addicts!
well yes, ever since i heard of this great breakthrough i've been looking for some sorta matchmaking room or community. perhaps a new 'Deadly Games matchmaking' forum here? Very Happy that'd be pretty cool. it'd also be good for helping those who wanna play multiplayer with dosbox who are having problems or whatever. or maybe just a general matchmaking forum with sub-forums for the games. well just a thought... happy gaming to all!

A forum might be kind of a jump. I'm really not sure how much demand there is or the logistics of organized multiplayer gaming using dosbox. I've played three player games with foes (friends) in ohio and florida in the US and it was more than playable, but there was a bit of fussing with configurations required beforehand.

I would be more than willing to help anyone with their dosbox/dfend problems, although I don't know anything about getting the ripped version to work in single or multiplayer. If you don't have a store bought master, you should at least try to get an ISO of the disk and mount it as a virtual drive.

I will say, however, that multiplayer DG is the only way to play jagged alliance with and against your friends, and is a total blast, to boot.

It would be interesting to get some kind of pickup game or tournament going, if someone could manage to organize that sort of thing.

yep i thought it'd be interesting too moller. just a thought... also i dont own JA2 yet but I assume there's a multiplayer mode in that too. the MP forum could be used to promote matchmaking for both games...DG and JA2. n i have abandonware ripped versions of JA1 and DG so i could be of help there, really not much different than the CD versions... just full speech is not there. also i've been having lots of trouble getting the patches to work with em, got JA1 up to 1.11 though. hehe well so far i haven't been able to get anybody else interested. but it would be a good time for all! Very Happy

Ack, sorry to burst your bubble, but JA2 and its sequel don't have multiplayer.

I have an original copy of Deadly games and I couldn't even get it to load on Windows XP.. I had a computer built on the old Windows 98 platform which seems to handle the game far better than a new computer.. In any case JA2 the original CD version ran fine as well ... but once I added patches & Mod my system seemed to crash in the middle of battles (other times too) this became extremely annoying and I had to save before each turn uncase the syaytem crashed... I will note that it just crashed to the desk top ... So it was the program .... computer didn't need to be reset for it to function.
