I started my JA career with JA2. Would it be too jarring to my brain to go back to back to "ancient" JA1 and Dangerous Games?

Well, if you like good plot development, JA1's a good one to play. JA-DG was more multi-player oriented, so the storyline of the single-play campaign was kinda flat. Of course, you could MAKE your own scenarios in JA-DG. It's up to your preferences, I guess.
Oh yeah - JA-DG scenarios are day-by-day types (i.e. you CANNOT go "back" after the mission is done), not as much fun as JA1, where every sector was accessible on a large map up 'til 7pm (end of the working day). Therefore, JA1 is helluva lot similar to JA2 than JA-DG will ever be. It's my personal view only, of course.

Same here, dudes. I make sure the original boxes are in real purdy condition too, so I can display them if the games ever become real collectibles...le sigh...

Hmmm... somone mentioned black humor...
Gotta love it when you ordered one merc to "check" another...
Fidel: "I see you later no?"
Of course, they didn't seem to differentiate between the sexes...
For the original poster, BUY JA! But don't expect the same game as the newer games... it's different, but very satisfying in it's own right.

JA1 is a nice game, even if you played JA2. I thinks it's nice to know were those mercs came from and how the game developped.
I own JA1 (in English and German)also DG and JA2.

I've got 'em all too. JA, JADG, JA2 & JA2UB. And I hate MS too for the very same reasons. I've resisted the Win ME upgrade for the very same reasons. I hope XP will have a DOS box or DOS mode.

I never liked JA1. It was hard to learn, and of course, now that the game is 10 years old, the graphics look horrible. I somehow liked Deadly Games better, the gameplay was easier. Going to a different map in JA1 was stupid, since you had to go to the edge of the map. And no NPCs, expect for Brenda, Jack and Lucas. The game wasn't good, not at all. A bad game, I'd say.

JA1 was great, definitely better than UFO. Much better interface, much better gameplay with real tactics, and yes it's pretty hard the first few times. Every battle was kind of Ironman since you could only save on exiting the game. Only a few weapons and armors, but very nice tactical gameplay. Of course the whole free that country campaign is kind of unnecessary, the meta-game was better in UFO's Geoscape IMO. That's why I like Deadly Games more, it does away with most inventory shuffling nicely and allows scenarios with limited turns. Would have expected UB to do something similar. Calling it Unfinished Business must be seen as typical Sirtech humor about funds running out in the middle of development...
JA1 a bad game??? Come on, it's old but as high quality as it ever gets. And again, there's zero problems running it on W2K/XP. Just install the VDM-Sound package, right-click JA.EXE and choose 'run with vdm-sound'. There you go
