JA1 seems so.....clunky. This is even though I can get it to work perfectly on my XP system. I'm gonna stick with JA2.

Deadly games runs perfectly on xp without an emulator. At least on my machine. I also got mine on Ebay a couple years ago. I got mine for 99 cents plus $2.00 for shipping.

The game worked perfectly on my computer. Not quite what I had expected with the scenarios and campaigns but I enjoy mucking around with the map creator

I would suggest playing JA1 and JADG!! JA1 is the better game, but you should still try DG for the new mercs (Buzz, Malice, the old Roachburn)

guess what guys, I did not throw away my old p2 with win 98 especially so I could run old programmes, namely ja1, dg, ja2, starcraft and other "oldies" without trouble. I think ja1 is the best in the series. Although still a great game, ja2 is too long and more complex. I play games to relax, not think.

It does bring back memories talking about JA1. I remember hating it at first, 'cause my men got shot all the time and the enemies were just standing there laughing (of course I came to love it, when I realized you could spend more hit points on aiming via the mouse Very Happy )
I started with JA1 and I loved the game and I could believe my eyes, when I got my hands on JA2 - even better!!! I think you can not consider yourself a JA fan if you haven't played all versions - 1, 2, addons, mods... It's like calling yourself a Star Wars fans when you've only seen the dark side of Vader!
And although I'm giving a reply 4 years later - You should definitely try JA1!

Well I think that seeing only Darth Vader on Star Wars is more than enough to claim to be a Dark Side adept Very Happy

Ja1 was my first strategy game I ever played and I REALLY got addicted to it...well, I still play it sometimes when I want to immerse myself in the Metavira environment..it's not as deep as Ja2, but it's DEFINITELY worth playing! And for the Scrooge McDucks out there..it's available as abandonware in a few websites!

I re-tried JA1 a short while ago and, well, it hadn't aged well. It wasn't the graphics but the gameplay. I have been spoiled by JA2.

.. I played JA a year after it came out. I still have fond memories of the island of Kevlar bushes. It was a pretty good game for the time, but it is incomparable to JA2. Tried re-playing last time, but got tired of un-openable crates. I mean, I hired Mike to bust open crates, and there were still some I could not get open...

I liked Deadly Games more..the mechanics were more sensible overall, the enviroment more varied, plus it had blood and tracks. (too bad JA2 doesnt have them. In rain, they would be mighty useful...

It was quite a challenge, doing it with the cheapest mercs available. I think I started with Mouse, Grunty, Pops and Speck. Later took on Fidel and maybe Vinny.

Ummm , found this site ( Polish JA site), with download section and apparently full versions of JA1 and Deadly Games , now in the interests of research , when I get home from work I might d/l these and see what's what ! Now I might have read this wrong , buuut , it mentions JA1 and 1.13 in the same sentence ? Anyone else want to test this out first ? ( I dont speak Polish , but the translater seems pretty good.....)

http://jagged-alliance.pl/

Ah , it has translations of games into Polish , not the games themselves . Oh well !

I finnaly started it all from the beginning.
Ran JA1 for the first time, in DosBox.
I bravely chose Normal difficulty and browsing through the manual picked potential mercs.

After hours of finding a good team I ended up with:

Ivan & Ice for marksmanship
Fidel for explosives
Speck for mechanics
Beth for basic medical and nice wisdom for some training

It seemed like a well-rounded team.

I started by searching sector 60 and collecting .38 ammo because everyone was armed with .38 revolvers. Cleanup of sector 50 went almost without a scratch, so I spent a day healing up. Next day a native joined my team. He was so useless that he sprung a trap after I cleaned up sectors 40 and 39 crippling half my team and killing himself. Then I got another native which had really good stats but half my team left and i ran out of money. Game over!
This game is awesome! I'm gonna start again, but should I go maybe with easier difficulty... Oh, and no save during combat is excellent
Too bad there is no topic about JA1 war experiences

A) JA1 is a really cool game, though it's hard to get used to the limited controls after having played JA2 or 1.13. I used to love JA1, but now I just can't play it anymore. Sad

B) Your initial team is pretty much the same as I always used (with some extras like Snake, Bud and Wolf), but the key is to move rapidly and secure sap-producing sectors as soon as possible on the first few days, otherwise (as you discovered) you can't afford to keep them all. It'll get easier to make money as you move along. Just make sure not to spend too much on militia to guard your sectors - only guard areas where you aren't advancing.

C) When you find crates and other containers, ALWAYS check them out with a merc with high explosives skill (in your case, Fidel) before trying to open them. It's usually best to leave crates 'till after the battle is over, for this reason. Also, as you discovered, when inspecting for traps, always keep your team away from the person trying to open it.

You'll get used to it eventually.

Actually I wasn't inspecting traps. I always do like you said in games like this. Even check doors and windows, everyinth ... But this game cought me off guard xD

It is so simple, yet so complex! Pure excellence!

Thanks for your reply

I may recommend Miss Roachburn and Shiz

I may also recommend to choose carefully whom to give the money

Remember there are reasons for a cut of pay (e.g. being doctored)

Grunty isn't a native (German) speaker
can't stand him shouting Schweinhund or Schweinshund (forgot which he uses) where the word is Schweinehund

the same in Die hard - Gruber pronounces excellent, but his words are nonsens
shoot the windows would be schie

I'm starting the new game.

And I'll go with Normal again, I love a good challenge.
Picked the same team, they seem ok to me. If this fails, I'm gonna choose a whole different oriented team.

If you fail a second time, I think it's your leadership you'll have to blame because it's quite a good starting team you got there.

I think everyone will agree that Ivan is the best merc you can hire on day one and he'll still be with you during the final showdown.

Fidel is one of the best explosive expert in the game with his high explosive and marksmanship skills, personally I hired him halfway in the game but if you can afford him on day 1, do so.

Have Beth train her medical skill for a bunch of days and she'll cover all your needs for a doctor and a snitch in your team.

Ice is quite a good sharpshooter early in the game.

Speck and Sparky are the best and cheapest home mechanic you can get. Sparky start off slightly worse than Speck, however Speck's mechanic and dexterity skills will never improve, while Sparky's mechanical skills will improve over the course of the game, and soon enough she'll be better at repairing than Speck. She's also cheaper than Speck.

Elio's usefulness depends what you intend to do with him. Sure he can't shoot and like all level 1-3 mercs, he'll walk on every mines and traps he stumbles on (the trick is to quick save when you conquer a sector in case something like that happens while you're looting it), but he's good at opening crates, and like all native guides, he's dirt cheap, he got some advices on the sectors you'll fight on and you can use him to lug around all the stuff you find (and there's quite a lot of stuff to bring back home in the 4 first sectors). If you get rid of him, you'll be offered better guides later on in the game (even if they are all average compared to mercenaries.)

It's also good that you didn't fill all the slots in your team on the first day. In 3 or 4 days, better mercs will accept to work for you and it's better to hire less early in the game than uselessly increasing your turnover rate when the good mercs become available.

-Edit-
And now I'm wishing there were mods/remakes/addons for that game. I'd love to have an excuse to replay it every time I feel like it.

Elio is also good for carrying the money you loot from sectors. He never steals it regardless of how much you give him.

I used "Me wear pants, me no wear house" Helio to cross the snake-infested waters. He is a rather good indoor fighter with a knife too. And he was the one who carried the mine detector. But his skills never increase, even if you manage to keep him alive for a long time.

Hah, that's legen-wait-for-it-dary! "There is building called warehouse...That be funny name. Me no wear house, me wear pants!"

Anyways, on day 1 I took sectors 50 and 40
On day 2 half was doctoring/repairing so I carefully took sector 59. Stationed my 8 guards on sectors 59 and 40 (4 guard each) and maxed out tappers.

Looking good for day 3.

Now I gotta decide shall I hire another one, because patients and "on duty" mercs are constantly changing I might need another for some shooting action.
Oh, and had a string of bad luck. Almost half of my guns got jammed on day 1. (Most of those that Fidel used ...)

Anyways, off I go to sleep. Tommorow is a new day and I need to get my mind straight to decide whether to take a new merc or not

Thanks everyone for advice

Around day 3 or 4, Leech will be interested in your little war, try to hire him if he's back from an assignment. He's sluggish and his health isn't that great, but he's cheap and he's an excellent shooter.

Also, one sector in a day is not enough. On a slow day when half your team is resting, you should be able to conquer two sectors. Three sectors or more on a good day.

But I think your current problem right now is sector 40. If there's one thing I learned the first time I played JA1, it was to never enter sector 40 from the south, conquering sector 40 from the south is a pain.

I hired Leech... Holy crap, this guy uses Berreta 9mm like a sniper!

When I hired him he had one clip and I took 2 sectors with 1 clip. Other guys couldn't hit anything (Ivan is patient Sad ) but this guy headshot them all.

Oh and whatever gun I give to Fidel gets jammed ...

Anyways, I ran into some trouble but atleast I can keep sectors and income.

This game never ceases to amaze me in sheer fun, randomness and complexity for its time

Oh... That is nice. So far Fidel and Leech are kinda giving me trouble because they refuse to take cover when they start shooting but I don't wanna use weapon swap exploit.
Speck is wierd, he complains about having no backup and other mock his marksmanship.
I'm surprised how awesome merc personalities are set up in a game that old. Seems to me like so-called next-gen games couldn learn something from old classics

Funny, I don't remember anyone making fun of anyone else's shooting when I played Deadly Games. Seems to me that some of JA1's personality got lost in its sequels.

JA1 has the same mercs relationships as JA2.
If I remember well, each merc can have a friend, an enemy, and a future enemy.
They have traits too (compared to JA2, it's more a mix of personality and traits): Magic is stealthy, Speck is nervous, one or two are "hopeless shot", Elio, Hamous and Hector have "summer legs"...
They have the normal, reversed or no evolution of their skills.

The source code of JA2 is built around a core of JA1 and has references to water snakes in its files.
