Starting team,

Buzz, sureshot
Hitman, sureshot
Leon Roachburn, goodshot + equipment
Clifford-Highball, doc-goodshot
Speck, alltime-mech

Pops gets hired for one day, "hey I'm glad someone my age could be of use" /or something.
Sometimes I'd get Carp&Turtle for their armor.

I've read (in some-guide?) that Turtle is a real-bargain if you'd train him a bit, he'd make a nice base-medic starting at $40/day.

i know this is unoriginal but I like Ivan, mainly cos i'm also russian, and can understand all he says, even though it is pretty broken. I was very disappointed when he started talking english in ja2, that kinda killed the game for me. Other favourite mercs include the usual (ice, fidel, lynx, mike, etc...). In my opinion Wolf is pretty useless for the money that he charges as he is a perfect example of a "jack of all trades and master of none", if I recall correctly none of his stats are in the 80s (except agility and health, not really important)

Definitely Ivan is the best merc that a newbie can hire in JA1. I gave him a modified .45 and he is my sniper!

Speck - mechanics, lockpick (but I hate him)
Wolf - next best shooter
Fox - great deadly girl
Ice - also good

I do not have a qualified nurse, but I'm a newbie at JA1,so don't be too hard on me. I'm just starting to learn it, the hard way (getting kicked in the but).

------------------
"Bobo! Bad dog! Come back with that!" is all I remember from my latest brain surgery.

Wolf markmanship 74
Ice markmanship 86
Ivan markmanship 92 or so

... I believe Ice is your second best shooter Smile

wauw and this after 7 years ROFOL

Ivan, Fidel & Ice are must have for the early stage: They can shoot Smile Fidel is quite slow due his low DEX and he refuses orders (Leave me alone, I'm Busy!) in the middle of combat but he's the best bargain for explosive expert Smile

Nice 3 to begin with, add wolf (lock picking) and hector (no good shot but 22 action points and cheap) or snake (22 action points and a fair shot)to them and u have a good starting team.
(maybye hire speck as well one the first day and give him medical training for 2 or 3 days so he can be a doctor and a mechanic later on in the game )

Why 5 starting mercs:
- carry lots of items
- easyer to finish your enemies of in the early stage

After a while get rid of wolf and hector or snake and keep fidel ivan and ice.

hehe

Over a decade later.. and i still enjoy the odd 'Deadly Game'.

My fav strike team consists of,

Magic - Sharpshooter/Locks/Mechanic/Stealth
Kelly - Sharpshooter/Pointman
Spike - Sniper/Explosives
Lynx - Sharpshooter/Pointman
Scope - Sniper/Medic
Scully - Sharpshooter/Medic

All are quick learners, expensive, but all are great shots.
And after a while, when you burn through a few missions and the money comes in you can afford these guys quite easily.

Great game, great series..
I just got my Deadly Games up and running the other day, still has that X factor that no other game series to my knowledge has ever done.

Snake
Vinny
Ivan
Wolf
Beth
and 1 cheaper guy with average stats

Fidel and Ice are great stat-wise but Fidel is little suicidal thanks to his "berzerk" perk, and Ice will leave you with equipment on.

My normal JA1 field team at the start:

Ivan
Ice
Tex
Vinny
Grunty

With a supporting cast of:
Doc
Sparky
Elio (Whom I send charging naked at the enemy until he dies gloriously in battle and is replaced by Hamous.)

Why I am always tempted to do that to Flo in JA2 at the Hicks mansion...

Well if you could strip her naked that is...

Kick ass Kelly will take you all on. Bring it!

Amazing that these games are still holding up years later. I bought DG when passing through the Amsterdam airport in the mid-90's, backed up and got a copy of Ambush off e-Bay and have been playing them all every since. I just played the JA2 Demo through again for the first time in a long while; that was some great programming!

I played JA just once, it was soon before JA2 and i loved it. My starting team was Ivan, Wolf, Ice, Jimmy, Snake and Fidel. In the middle of the game i kicked out all of them except Ivan and hired Kelly, Magic, Spike, Scully, Sidney and Mike. This game is unique because of the "no save" element. This is forcing the players to hire only the best mercs and don`t waste time with the rest. But when i`m reading what personalities are hiding there, especially guys like Reuban, maybe i`ll give them a chance. Planning to play JA again someday, but can`t get the speech version of the game and don`t want to play without it.

Seeing as how it's been probably eight years or so since I last played JA, I can't recall exactly.

But I do believe it usually had:
Wolf
Ivan
Ice
Fidel
Snake
Jimmy
Beth

Followed by Fox and Speck on day 2.

Man I really had to take some trees fast and early to keep that team running...

I have got to get a new copy of it somewhere so I can actually kick Santinos ass. Never did finish the game. Maybe I'll get the DS version?

Hmm. Why not.

JA1, Day 1:
*Ivan (it's Ivan, why would I NOT hire him?)
*Ice (Gunbunny)
*Fidel (Explosives/Gunbunny)
*Speck (1st Day Field Mechanic, Stay-At-Home Mechanic every other day)

Day 2:
*Fox (to patch up my squad after Day 1, also Battlefield Support)

Day 4:
*Static (Field Mechanic/Gunbunny)
*Hamous (Free Gunbunny; turned Elio into a knife-wielding berzerker on Day 2, didn't end well)

Day 5:
*Hurl (maybe?) (Crate Opener/Mule/Battlefield Support-in-a-pinch)

Will probably rotate out/shoot Hurl (its OK, they'll resusitate him later) once I get some more trees operational for someone with better stats, or if I find out he's not a good crate popper.
