Hi everybody! This is my first post, although I was looking around
for some time. Right now I'm playing JA1, and after Brenda was
kidnapped I was searching for nine days. When I finally found her she
was dead Sad
Now here's my question: Is there a way to rescue her alive or will she be killed
no matter what I do?

I it is possible to save Brenda, but it takes some planning and leg work. Two things to keep in mind are that if you take too long trying to free her, or make too much noise during the rescue, the enemies will slit her throat. As soon as Jack tells you to that she is missing, your top priority should be a rescue attempt, don't bother trying to clear the sectors leading up to the one she is being held in unless you are very close, it takes too long. The best way I've found to free her is to send in your team from the southeast. Have 2 or 3 (depending on who you're using) stealthy mercs with silenced 9mms, and one more with a rifle of some sort, swim over to the island where she is captive from the south east (bottom right of the map)of the sector. Make sure that they all know how to swim, and have knives of some sort because nothing worse than watching an elite merc like Leo drown because he's been chomped on by snakes. Anyways, once the stealth team is near the shore of the island, send the rest of your team towards the bridge to pick off any stragglers. If you can get some mustard gas, it is a good way to make an area temporarily inaccessible to enemies. If you don't think that you'll be able to take all of the guards before they rush in, send a merc with high lock picking skills (Magic, Mike, Speck) into the hut while the others cover him. If you have some luck and time it right you'll be in good position dish out a major arse-wuppin' to your enemies. Once she is freed, have the crappiest guy on your team go talk to her because she'll need an escort and you probably won't want to waste an elite merc on babysitting duty. Hope this helps and I wish you luck.

Oh man, that sucks! I tried to save her a couple of times, but no matter how stealthy
I was, she was dead. Sad
Do you think day eight since her dissappearance was too late?
Does it mean something special when my men say things like "Brenda's been
dead for a while, a long while!"
(Snake) or do they say that every time? Could it be
that Brenda is going to be killed at the beginning of a certain or random day since
she was kidnapped? I think that are enough questions. Can anybody help?

I remember I had the same problem a looong time ago. I do not remember if day 8 is too late for rescue, though. However I think it is not.

The problem was that when I approached the bridge I early got stuck in a firefight with guards. The problem: When the fight starts one guard that can not be seen from the position I had redrawed and killed Brenda. Solution: I advanced until I spotted that guard. My advice is to do the same. If necessary ignore the incoming fire until you spot him; he has to be stopped at all cost.

Edit: If I remember that correctly I approached from the east. From that position "Brenda's Death" was a little bit more south west than the other enemies. I think as well that he was the only one that kills Brenda.

Why do all you people let Brenda get kidnapped? Just put enough guards at the lab and you won't have to go through the trouble of getting her back.

Yeah! You cheapo's! You're not even Dutch and even Sint and me spend money for guards! Besides that, Brenda is a key figure in the game, all the more reasons to have her well protected! :nono:

Well, at the beginning I had the sector guarded to the max, but every time the sector
was attacked the enemies won (don't know why), even when the enemy squad
consisted of only three men (no joke!). After two or three of such defeats most of
the guards quit. So I stopped defending the sector because there's no point in
sending guards in a sector where the enemy would win anyway (I got the sector
back with my mercs after all).
But back to the problem: The thing I don't get is that when I proceed to the building
(in stealth mode) where Brenda is held captive I don't see anyone (I'm coming
from sout east and through the water to the back door). I don't think I was seen
either. But still Brenda is dead! Am I doing something wrong? What could it be?

Defending the sector only worked for me when my mercs were at hand participating in the fight. The guards will not be able to hold them back on their own. The attacking enemies are equipped too good (one even had a M16 once - just imagine that agains guards with a 38 Smith and Wesson. Even in small numbers the enemy is deadly). But this gives a nice opportunity because with some luck you get a good weapon drop early on.

Well I only tried once, but I failed at rescuing Brenda, though I would be curious how Jack would reward you for rescueing his daughter. I'd suggest defending the sector, after some days it won't be attacked any more.

Good Luck if you're going to proceed to save Brenda.

Can you post a screenshot of the map, your starting point, your route and the area where you finally meet the enemy?

Don't mind...have you tried to approach the eastern bridge (if I'm not totally wrong there is one?) and directly attacked the guards as I have suggested?

I tried, but opposition was too strong. My mercs were shot up fast because cover
is crappy. I'll try again and let you know if I succeed.

Now it worked. I sent three mercs to the eastern bridge while letting the
remaining two swim from the southern edge of the map to the island to make
sure nobody enters the building. I don't think the enemy would enter through
the back door. After clearing the sector I only have to open the door(s). Until
now I used grenades or explosives for that, but maybe I killed Brenda by accident
that way. Uh Oh Could that be, what do you think? By the way, do you know if there
are any keys on the map or in a surrounding sector, so that you can unlock the
door without a lockpicking merc? I only got Vinny for that and he is wounded, so
he can't do it.

You can also try shooting the door. Although I must admit I'm not entirely sure that works in JA1. I'm positive it works in JA:DG.

So Brenda is dead again? Damn Sad No, I do not remember if there is a key to open the door. However, I do not remember any difficulties to open the door. I may be wrong though.

I tried to save her many times, but it's always the same! She must have been
killed some days before. Since I have no chance to save her, I will probably
start the game again from the beginning. Anyways, thanks a lot to you guys for
the big number of tips!

Well, if you wait too long, the enemies will get bored of waiting around to be killed and off Brenda without your intervention. Perhaps eight days is too long.

UPDATE: Brenda will not be hurt by a Molotov Cocktail to the door. I don't think she's actually capable of suffering actual damage in game terms - look at her sprite, it's all weird. I think the one and only way for her to die is to get her neck slashed. Just look at her, I think she's actually a terrain object.

Best way to rescue Brenda is to take in your team of mercs from the SE or preferably SW corner. When you rescue Brenda your most expensive merc will automatically be the one to escort her back, so you may as well send him to do the rescue. Send your most expensive merc around the back (have him go W until he is almost immediately S of Brenda's room, then N) and let all your other guys just kick it where you entered to avoid triggering alarm. Do not move them! You shouldn't pick the lock on the back doors, either - you risk being seen that way. Simply plant an explosive on the W-E running wall immediately SW of Brenda. It won't harm her, you'll be in, and the enemy will be too far away to intervene. If it's not too late (daywise), she'll be alive and your merc will escort her back immediately. Then take your other mercs (who are hopefully still relaxing on the border), have them travel to the next sector and quicksave. That's it. Foolproof.

Hi again! I haven't been here for quite a long time and am surprised that this thread is still running! Cool :ok: ! In order to save Brend I had to start the game all over again because
1. I took too much time to rescue her, and
2. I had no savegame left before she got kidnapped :wb:

So, since I now knew were she was held captive it took me only a couple of days to return her safely to Dr. Richards. Phew, that was quite some work but it payed off!

*Sigh* Those were the days...

Yes, I always liked this mission as well Smile And I was even more excited when I found out that the sheets of paper are part of a code that can be deciphered. If the game would switch to realtime once the battle is over I would start with it imidiately again Smile

Yeah, I noticed that too. Never managed to decipher it, though. I taped together the ripped sheets of paper, but couldn't find out its specific use. Same thing with the messages from Santino to his men.

If you manage to decipher the code it gives you time and location of specific deliveries of weapons to Santino. Great fun to find them Smile You really should try to crack to code. The outcome is really worth it, and it is not too difficult anyway Very Happy

That messages I managed to decipher, it really wasn't hard "D X" simply meant "Day X" and the rest was written in the text. I never managed to meet that documented occassions, though, but I wasn't really after it neither. Anyway, I was talking about the other kind of messages which seemed to consist of chains of random fonts and signs, but it's some kind of code. All I managed to learn from this is, that "/" seperates whole words and the code on the pieces of paper taped together where a key or hint to solve that puzzle. The code table (the sheet with the coffee stain) must be connected to that too. Maybe I'm wrong, though.

Isn't it those messages that the natives like Hamous only can read?

I only remember one message that did sound like Spanish, but is it even possible to make the natives translate it somehow?

Just put it in their inventory and then right-click on it, the translations should be able to read then.

The principle of the code is very simple; one letter is substituted by a different letter, e.g.

"L Mn Uzdc", doesn't make much sense, but if you use a code table (L=I, M=A, N=M, U=J, Z=A, D=C. C=K) it would say ...? One part of the code table gives you a part of the solution. The rest of the code has to be figured out by the player. It is not too hard, though.

As most of you know, once Brenda is kidnapped, she is usually kept in sector 24. My current game, I captured that sector before she was kidnapped. Once she was kidnapped, she was taken to sector 33 instead. I rescued her by going full frontal assault with my 1-man assault team (Mike), made lots of noise in the process and she was still alive, weird huh? Anyway, my next game I will try to capture both these sectors before she is kidnapped and see what happens.
