Hello Guys,

been playing Ja1 again extensively and been able - for the first time - to decipher the code partially. And this topic beeing mentioned in other posts I decided to share things I recently found out. Well, I guess, it's an old topic, but well, maybe some people are interested.

The code works that way that one character is replaced by another. For example X really stands for T and so on. Question is how to know what character is replaced by the other.

There two possibilities I figuered out so far.

First, there's a minefield in sector 41. There is a sign that says "attention" (or beware, danger etc. I don't know exactly because I play the german version and so do not know what is the exact term in english) But the sign is written in the code. So you can at least translate "attention minefield" in the code and so figure out which character is replaced by which.

Second, you find a note mentioning the code, meaning which character replaces which in sector 53. Though it is dirty and only partly usefull, and I haven't found out yet, wheather there is some way to read it completly.

Well, there is a third note, which's use I cannot figure out yet. It's the only one with words divided by / "backslashes". I suppose it is also linked to the code. Found it somewhere at the center of the map/sector of Metavira.

Same prob here, never figured out the paper with the backslaches ...
Anyone knows the meaning of it ?

Note: Now this is clear. S.Franz is expecting a replacement
from Santino. That person will arrive one day before the
stork. So, the replacement will be D16, and the stork
will be D17!

Right now playin Ja1 again and really interested in finally solving this puzzle.
Any luck anyone on translating the whole paper?

Is there a typo in it, actually?

From mgl logic, it should be "read each other letter, reset after a space".

"HI/-/AS/ITS/ONCE" probably contains STONE but then its a typo since if you read H-STO you chould read C next, not NE. (OnCe, not ONcE) and also H- doesnt mean anything (at least to me). Is it "headstone" maybe?

An extra space in "S/ONCE" to make "S/O NCE" would indeed let you read H-STONE on the line.

yes but what H-STONE means?

PS: From reading faq i see now, its Head Stone he was after... so it indeed means Head Stone.

PS: It should probably be OUNCE instead of ONCE (or O NCE) because
1) NCE isnt a word and
2) a space means a new word begins (in the decoded sequence) so there should be no space until word "stone" is finished

With a bit of trial and error, I managed to figure out another of Santino's codes:

SL - ALPHA
RDVU - QUAD C5
STORK - A.M. - 26
CO - ALPHA

I originally thought of a shipment on day 26 in Sector 5 but it's not Sector 5, it's Quadrant C5.

You've got to think of the map as if it were the map of JA2, but in reverse, letters on the top row, numbers on the left column:

Meaning Quadrant C5 is Sector 43. If you raid this sector at dawn on day 26, you will find nine crates containing:
3x Mustard Gas,
5x Stun Grenade,
6x Grenade,
2x Detonator,
2x Explosives,
1x Plastic Explosive,
1x M16 Rifle,
5x M16 Ammo

Useful equipment for once. Like all shipments in the game, most veterans conquering two to three sectors a day will already have conquered this sector for a long time now, but someone going at a slower pace due to a no saving challenge or a Let's Play might find it interesting.

I also tried to decipher this coded message during my on-going play through and after a hour of head-scratching I hadn't got anywhere. It'd be nice to know the method to decipher this one.

It is explained above. Just read every other letter, starting from the first one, and include the -.
