I just purchased and downloaded Jagged Alliance 2 to my laptop (which is not normally connected to the internet). It installed fine but when I tried to run it offline I got the 3-hour trial message, I guess because the game couldn't retrieve the key from the internet. I turned on my wireless card and connected to the internet and the game was able to get the key and play normally after that. Before I turned my laptop off though, I made several hardware config changes like disabling the wireless card. When I rebooted in the morning the game reverted back to the 3-hour trial version.

Obviously I need a new key that works, and I've emailed customer support but have receieved no response.

In the meantime, I noticed that everytime I make a hardware change and try to to start JA2 it displays a different hardware profile. After reading this I had a question:

"Why am I being told I have 3 hours to play a digital distribution of my SFI game?

The download of a digitally distributed version of any Strategy First game entitles the end user to two separate installations of the game on unique hardware configurations. This mechanism has been implemented as an anti-piracy measure and not as an attempt to sell multiple copies to a single end user. Changes to hardware may result in the installed version of the game reverting back to a 3 - hour trial version. Should you experience any difficulties running or playing your Strategy First game after making hardware changes to your computer please contact Strategy First at strategyfirst.cs@digitalriver.com. Be sure to have your order number and billing information on hand in order to expedite your customer service inquiry.

So, is the key that customer support gives me (when the get around to it) going to become invalid as soon as I make a hardware change, just like the initial one did? I hope not, because that would certainly be the most ill-conceived and least customer frientdly anti piracy limitations I've heard of...that in order to run a game I would have to keep the exact same hardware config as when I first downloaded it?

Well it turns out SF won't let you make a change to your NIC configuration without invalidating the keys they send you. Of course they don't tell you that (you have to look for it on your own after something goes wrong) or that you only get 2 keys until after you've purchased and downloaded the game, a practice which I'm not sure is even legal. Can you imagine a car dealership selling you a car and only mentioning afterwards that you can't upgrade it without the engine shutting off for good, and you have to call them every time to get it working again?

Thankfully, downloading the 1.13 mod and replacing their stupid .exe altogether has solved the problem.

I almost had the same problem as you. I downloaded my copy of JA 2 off of the Strategy First and when I tried to get the key my firewall blocked the connection and then it told me that I only had a three hour trial to play the game. I was worried but I quit the game and tried playing the game again and I was lucky that this time my firewall recognized the game and I was able to get my key.

I wish that I was able to buy my own physical copy of JA2 but I live in China at the moment so its pretty hard to get one. I did have a real CD about 1 1/2 years ago but it was stolen when I moved to Kuwait when after I got my missing luggage back...anways...I am happy that you got your game working.

Take it easy
