I don't know if this discussion has been brought up before, but I'd like to know people's opinions on it - is it cheap? Cheating? Good strategy?

After taking out the small military outpost at the beginning of UB, I stick my mercs on the roof of the building where the sniper once was and fart around, repair things, train my mercs up & wait for the counter attack. After repelling a few attacks (quite easily when you're way up on the roof and all that fodder is trying to get cloe to you), 20-odd baddies will start to lay seige to my little outpost and, while it can get hairy at times, is a great way of accumulating guns, ammo and assorted equipment that makes taking out Varrez a cinch.

Once the town's mine, I call in Flo & any other cheap Merc merc's to gather up all the left over guns & ammo and get her to sell them to the arms dealer, giving me tonnes of moolah & the ability to hire anyone I want.

Cheap? Good Strategy? Aw heck, it works for me.

In my opinion it's in the gray area between cheating and good tactics. While it is a clever move, you are essentially exploiting a weakness in the game engine to produce an artificial result. In today's high tech battlefield, if you attempted something like that (even against a poorly equipped guerilla force) you'd find youreself in a hail or mortar fire if you're enemy's demolition's people hadn't already made their way inside the building and leveled it. But because in Ja2 rooftops basically float in the air even with no walls and can't be shot through (even with LAW Rockets) when you're on the roof you are in an impregnable fortress.

I think it's a smart tactic and I applaud you're ingenuity. I don't think I'd have that kind or patience but that sounds very effective.

How do you call in mercs at the outpost? You havent been to Varrez yet to see Betty and fix your laptop -- I assume you are editing it in.

I send NO mercs into this sector at night and take out the snipr on the roof then exit the sector. Rinse and repeat, as the sniper drops the Val and ammo, plus the spectra, everytime you kill him.

6 Vals is deadly and great fun in the UB mods like Bearpit1 Smile

Never tried that. I don't call in any additional support as it's impossible since you absolutely have to see Betty to get your lap top up & working. I rarely ever call in support in addition to my Alpha team of mercs that I keep from the beginning. New mercs are either mules or militia trainers or exist to fill a spot vacated by a dead merc.
