No offense, but more people should read the JA newsgroup, this was posted there 7 days ago.

Thanks guys! As JaTe says does raise more questions than answers, but I can understand Strategy First having to hedge answers. Still it is some good news. Better than "No, Sirtech and Jagged Alliance are dead, dead, dead..."

I was just wondering about a week ago if there was news.

What questions apart from the release date of JA3 does this interview leave open? Brush up your diplomatic speak, there's gonna be JA2 gold box, they've bought the license and hired everyone they could get from the old team. I don't think the interview could've been any clearer without resorting to dubious business practices. I mean, at this point they probably can't say yes we've got the full chain of financing and everthing there, more likely the ex-Sirtechers will have to convince the company a bit themselves how and why they want to do it...

For example:
_____
Q) Would you consider doing another JA using JA2 - UB engine, are you considering releasing some of the utilities associated with the UB editor to add functionality.?

Many of the features in JA2 UB have been extended back to the original JA2 so that has already been done. We are looking into all of the possibilities for future titles.
_______

What does that mean?

means that Sirtech remains the legal copyright holder of everything concerning JA. In case of failure the license will go back into their hands.

"Needless to say, Don was more than happy to enter an agreement to manage the series for the future." - "This partnership is a great accomplishment for us." wants to tell us that there has been some real hard bargaining and networking behind the scenes and Sirtech surely didn't sell out below their value.

"Many of the features in JA2 UB have been extended back to the original JA2 so that has already been done."
Nothing at all is going to be done with the old sourcecode. Don't expect new patches etc for UB from us.

"We are looking into all of the possibilities for future titles." - anything we do with JA will come packed in boxes and shrink-wrapped.

"Our relationship with Sirtech has given us the opportunity to hire several members of the Sirtech development team who are now working for Strategy First." - after long negotiations with the new mother-company, Sirtech managed to secure the jobs of some of its leading developers.

"I think it is fair to say that all those involved are looking forward to the future possibilities and helping this franchise develop further for years to come."
- there are going to be products labeled Jagged Alliance from us, but I'll leave you guessing if it's going to be M.E.R.C. action figures or something that runs on your PC for starters.

Mainly I was thinking of the fact they didn't really answer the question

" are you considering releasing some of the utilities associated with the UB editor to add functionality? "

I want them to answer that question and release the tools!

I think we should start the Free the Endangered JA2 tools association!

Hmm... There are no real answers in this interview, but it is a lot more than nothing. Things we now know for sure:

A bunch of the Sir-Tech guys are working at SF.
SF owns the license to the Jagged Alliance franchise
JA2 and UB are going to be put into a Gold-Pack
They are going to extend the JA-franchise in some way or other.

These facts are now set in stone, thats good... Lets now see what comes next...

Repeating myself from other threads, but any chance of the "opinion leaders" in the JA community talking SF into including a mods / campaigns CD in the JA2 gold box?

Aside from it making the box more attractive to buyers, JA has a lot of goodwill among game reviewers and it would give them an excuse to say something nicer about the box than "good packaging job."

Good JA2 Gold sales should also help justify a decent budget for developing and marketing JA3.

I doubt that it will sell a lot. Only the real fans will buy it, and for the other people it is too dated.

The new edition will also add features of the expansion pack into the main Jagged Alliance 2 game, notably improved enemy AI, better weapons balance, an enhanced interface, and an "iron man" mode.

Hmmm...

They don't say anything about releasing some editors for Ja2 or the JA2 source codes...

Improving JA2 by adding the Iron Man mode or an improved interface doesn't make me happy at all. If you ask me, not too many people will buy the Gold JA2.
