Jagged Alliance 2 : Vengeance.
Mod designer .... The Scorpion

Ja2 V is a brand new Modification featuring more than 180 new or edited maps, featuring new mercenaries, new RPC`s, lots of new NPCs, a large weapon mod, new quests, new tileitems and new story elements.

Features include:
graphics and values of weapons and items
180 new maps
new Recruitable PC's
new NPC's
new Mercenaries
changes to EXE
new town names and edited strategic map

and much more...

... In the hazy cordite clouded aftermath of the campaign to free Arulco, law and order was not restored quick enough, giving many of the war criminals supporting the Queen's regime opportunity to escape the militia forces of Miguel Cordona and regroup.

Cordona`s regime was supposed to be democratic, but this resulted in widespread opposition, as the threat of all too common corruption made it impossible for the people to trust anybody. When Cordona wanted to stop newly acquired oil reserves on the west coast from being exported and instead use the petrol for rebuilding his country he created an enemy in the powerful Hale and Burton energy corporation who had instilled themselves within Arulco as part of an agreement for reparations and free-trade treaties with the US.

As international legal proceedings continued to dog Cardona's resources, lawlessness began to resurface and the criminals and warlords that had once been in hiding now began to reinstate themselves within the country and begin to grab a stranglehold of their own districts. This lack of security only seemed to attract more lawlessness, more criminals and more corruption and it was only a matter of time that the people became threatened by the very mercenary gangs that were supposed to be securing Arulco, they demanded for these foreign mercenaries to get out of their country.

A.I.M had held training bases in Alma, which was soon handed over to the rebuilt Arulco defence force, but managed to keep a vested interest by basing themselves south of Omerta, where they were still welcomed by the loyalty of the people there.

However, with the Government's intention to throw the mercenaries out of the country, the morale of the mercenaries sank and they started to look for their fortune privately, some even started to work for Hale and Burton and the fat salaries they were offering.

Then just as the unsettled country seemed to be sinking in a quagmire of bickering politics all hell broke loose, and one of the largest fears of Arulco's people reappeared in the shape of Queen Diedranna. Despite testimonies of senior A.I.M. staff and constant claims of her death, Deidranna was once again directing her newly revitalized army from every corner of the country. Her face was in the newspapers, on the TV and her voice spanned the airwaves, claiming her sovereignty and promising death to all conspirators of those who had tried to overthrow her before. Her first major address delighted in informing surviving rebels that with the help from double agents AIM's base had been leveled in an overnight raid by her army.

With their camp seemingly destroyed, funds hemorrhaging and their reputation ruined in a country that no longer trusted them, an associate company only known as 'The Agency' have sanctioned you to lead a band of mercenaries to reclaim their base and track down their staff.

Your goal is, to find Miguel Cordona and to restore his regime and find the traitors and punish them!

This is no longer business as usual....this is personal... this is VENGEANCE!!!

Nice german lochmacher

i haven`t tested with the mod with gold version. there are differences with the folders, like "savegame" folder and stuff have different names in german version

there`s also a "german" folder playing some role.

Now, apparently, it won`t work with ja2 gold 1.12

i don`t know what other versions you have but since it won`t work with gold, it appears it only works with german versions. Like the exe from ja2 vengeance tries to find files of german isntallation i guess

i`m sorry for this

That's ok Scorpion, how could you know? The fact that it works as intended with the version that you have is proof that it is not your fault, rather a difference in US and German versions. Still, maybe it can be fixed...

The error message it saves is:

Exception occured at address: 0x0045dde3
Write Access Violation at: 0x00b624bc

"The thread tried to read from or write to a virtual address for which it does not have the appropriate access."

Since I do not code, I do not know how to fix or work around this. It is release one, so I'm not bummed Smile . It looks worth waiting for.

is there a way i can attach files to the forum? i guess not

@lochmacher

i can send you the german.slf archive. i guess this is required when playing a german exe but probably isn`t included in an english install

can you check whether there is ja2/data/german.slf archive in your install? if not, placing one there might help...

The readme file (thanks for doing one in english) says to "apply the patches on CD" does that mean you have to patch the game? And, to what version 1.05, or later?

this applies to german release version of ja2 again, where you have patches 1 and 2 on CD

for english version it seems (see lochmacher`s posting above) that additional files are required in order for ja2 to work

i don`t have an unmodified english version so i can`t test myself. but i can send the german.slf archive. i think, with that installed it might work with version 1.05 or even gold installed

That still leaves the question, should I patch my new install or not before trying to install the mod?

Thanks

@masguy
i think the best idea is to try it with your current version and see whether it works and is stable

i don`t know about the differences between the english versions

For those keeping track:

I did a new install of the original JA2 (not gold)

I installed skorpion

While a preliminary screen popped up, I got this error message:

cannot init file FONTS\LARGEFONT1.sti

Any suggestions?

my exe seems unable to find your fonts.slf archive

i think this is quite a common error with new install. i guess there are people around here that can help you with this problem

if, after a new install (only ja2) the problem persists, you can extract the fonts.slf archive into fonts folder

but i bet there are better solutions around to this problem

probably in ja2 technical departement... i`ll have a look there

i sent the file to you, bearpit

*edit*

i knew i had seen this largefont1.sti before

its an error while installing ja2 see here http://jagged.gamigo.de/ja_forum/showthread.php?t=15524&highlight=largefont1.sti

there should be the correct file (NK_data.zip)

put this folder into the install and check if the problem persists (or you get another error message)

you`ll probably get another error message cannot initiate smallfont1.sti in this case you need to extract the fonts.archive into your ja2/data/fonts folder

i can email you the files needed if you wish

I did another clean install, no patches. I strated the game it worked. then I installed the LF, and NK patches, started the game and it loaded, then I unzipped the vengence file to the game, and tried to start the gane from the JA2 exe file embeded in the vengence files that were created, and I still got the same message "cannot init file FONTS\LARGEFONT1.sti" Is there any other installing to do after the vengnece files are unzipped to JA2?

I'll take all the files you can send. my e-mail address is:

mithchmberger@msn.com

Thanks again for all your help.

I just want to make it clear that i don't think I'm entitled to anyone's help. Making a mod is daunting enough without having to deal with folks on a whole other continent trying to play the game too. So if you can help those americans who want to give the mod a spin that's fine, if not, that's okay too. There is another obvious solution to the compatability problem, does anyone have the German version of the game they'd like to sell?

Thanks

Mitch

I hope you smart guys can figure out how it will work on JA2 English. The mod sounds great. I will try to play it, though I speak no German. Will there be an English version?

Yea, this is the only thing keeping me from downloading it. I'd really love to check this out but I know I'd be frustrated by not being able to understand what was going on. It would reduce the game to a mindless shoot em up and I'm not interested in that sort of thing.
My German is almost non exisistant. I'm thinking of getting a language learning CD or even a book but haven't done that yet.

A 'subtitled' version where all you did was replace the text .edts would be way better than nothing, even if you only replaced dialouge and quest type info.

Subtitles would be great. I have no idea how much work that would be. I sure hope this can be done, I would love to play it.

first we`d have to check about these compatibilities problems people have. i remember that an older version run on some people`s english install

but for that i`d need to know on what (english) versions it runs at all

it doesn`t seem to work with ja2 gold after what i`ve read here

subtitles:

there are at least 3 folders that would need translation. i dunno, maybe the german speech of new RPC or mercenaries could remain untranslated

then still there`d be tons of subtitles

additionally, quests and e-mails... however there it shoudl be possible to copy-paste from an english version to some extend. before taking a careful look at it, i can`t yet tell how much work that would be.

maybe i can, the other way around, carry some things that people would judge positive or well done fom ja2 vengeance into another mod (english, version 1.12 gold based, see Bearpit`s posting in off-topic forum; "new large scale mod?")

i think this is the better alternative

Same problem for me ... crashes to JA2 folder.
Fresh install of V1.03 with Vengeance over that fails to play.

There was an earlier Vengeance version which played no problems ??? so somewhere along the way this release version became incompatible with English V1.03 Standard & V1.12 Gold.

I have e-mail, and a happy-face guy with double machine pistols sneering at me.

Well, I started with my patched Jagged Alliance gold version (english) and I have the Vengeance mod running.

I started a new game and got the "internet" interface to read my e-mail and recruit mercs.

I haven't recruited anybody, and don't know if I will encounter some other glitch later. But I got past the crossed swords screen and that is what counts - right.

Not all these procedures will be necessary. I was fooling around.

I had a gold version, which I had patched up to Urban Chaos, and I applied the patch back to version 1.07 - because I wondered if an older version of the game would work better.

(The version 1.07 patch is still available from Jagged Alliance Galaxy (link to fileplanet)).

I then downloaded the Jagged Gold all-in-one patches from Jagged Alliance Basis

http://jagged.gamigo.de/download/files/JA2allinone.zip

http://jagged.gamigo.de/download/files/JA2Gold_112_allinone.zip

I figured the best way to make my English version more German would be to apply a German version patch over top of it.

Actually, I patched the JA2Gold_112_allinone patch over top of the JA2ALLINONE patch and then put the Jagged Alliance Vengeance mod files over top of this.

Finally, I patched the vengeance mod by putting the patch FONTS folder and the GERMAN.slf file into the game DATA folder. Be sure to look at the german forum link mentioned above to get the NK_data.zip and German.zip patches.

Then I put all of that on top of my cobbled together version 1.07 game.

I started it up and... no errors, no crashes, I am into the game. Not sure what made the difference (other than maybe my extra german patches), but I must have done something right.

Now to actually start playing this mod.

I am going to try to go back to a clean install to try this again. But I thought everyone should know that we can get an english version going with this mod - using files we can download for free.

I don't think you need some multiple patched version. I think we can apply the german patches to an English Gold version and then apply the patched Vengeance mod over top of that.

I really didn't plan to use the Urban Chaos version - it is just what I had on my computer.

I wanted to see what happens when the game crashes. And see if the german patches might make a difference. It was just a quick experiment.

I didn't know it would actually work.

Are you saying you've done a 'hybrid' English version of the mod with perhaps some of the mercs speaking English or just that you've got the mod to work in it's purely German form?

It is a hybrid version.

I started all over with a new copy of gold 1.12, and then applied the german patches, the vengeance mod, and the vengeance patches.

I have recruited Shadow, Igor and MD. Shadow starts with a P90, so I am hoping he cleans up Omerta for me quite easily. I only have him for one day.

The three mercs are speaking English (or at least MD and Shadow are. Igor seems to be saying the usual Russian lines.

It is cool to see how they enter the map (parachuting out of thin air).

For the most part, only the new characters in the mod will speak German. Though I note that in the German patch has a new npcdata file for every npc. And there are new NPC Speech voices for Shank.

Okay, shank will talk in German until recruited - and then he will talk in English.

I haven't talked to any NPC's yet so I don't know if this is going to cause any problems.

But the important thing is we are now into playing the mod, as opposed to seeing crashes on the startup screen.

Very well done CatSpam! I'm gonna try this right away. I don't have a copt of Wildfire or anything but I'll try patching 1.03 to 1.12 then follow you're install proceedure.
I'll let you know how it goes.

Good job man!

I'm not sure where I would find the Fonts patch? I believe I already have the German.slf that comes with Proedit, please explain where I find these and where they go.

Thanx again.

If you managed to get the patches working best solution for everyone is if the final version patched files were zipped up & made available for download.
Lets see what Scorpion comes up with. Such a zip could be hosted here so everyone interested could soon be playing.

I just followed the steps as described by CatSpam except where he started from a 1.12 patched to UC then back to 1.07? (I think), I did a clean install of 1.03 English, patched it to 1.07 then followed his proceedure from there.

The only thing I didn't do is put the patch FONTS folder in the data file because I haven't been able to find that patch.

It's running very smoothly and I'm getting my ass handed to me on every screen so far. The new weapon sounds are a little extra loud and the general game sounds somewhat choppy but you can hear everything perfectly so this is not really an issue (just nitpicking).
The new faces are photo perfect! Can't wait to see some of the chicks. My hat is off to you're team Scorpion.
The weapon values seem more geared toward realism (hence the bruised ass I'm recieving) and so far I'm really digging the whole items mod.
The parachute animation looks a little hacky but is a nice touch. On a serious note: if you adjust the y coordinate on each frame by decreasing the number by 30 or so you should be able to get them parachuting from the top of the screen instead of out of thin air. I seem to remember them having to walk to their starting gridno from there (or being 'blinked' there) but you have to trade one for the other. You might also try increasing the number of frames in the animation to allow for the missed space. No big deal though, it's such a small part of the game.
The maps are very cool. The use or terrain and obstacles is very imaginative.
I'm having a great time with this one.
Thanx again Scorp and crew!

I followed CatSpams instructions to the letter:
"a new copy of gold 1.12, and then applied the german patches, the vengeance mod, and the vengeance patches"
This didn't work, i got to see the sword opening but then back to desktop.
The next step was to do 1+2 (a new copy of gold 1.12, and then applied the german patches). That didn't work at all, back to desktop after a couple of flickers on the screen.
I guess the Vengeance JA2.exe is pointing to some other directory(ies) than the english version.
Probably just some minor adjustments necessary to the path(s), the key is to know which

I'm wondering if you installed it in the exact order CatSpam suggested? Because files will overwrite each other this might be the problem, or perhaps having the UC mod installed first might have done it in you're case.

Just throwing out suggestions. Hope you get it running.

Can someone who has installed the game and gotten it running lay it out

step

so the inept amongst us can try it. I have to admit I'm a lttle confused by all the back references in some of thdirections. I tried floowing them and came up empty.

I started with a clean v1.03 english install into a folder I called Vengence. You can easily do a multiple install by just dragging and dropping into you're new folder. I put this directly on my C Drive (no Program files, etc. etc.)

Then I patched this to v1.07 (although I think this wasn't necessary because the next few steps already have .exes). I'm just saying how I did it.

Then I applied the all in one patches in the exact order CatSpam had them listed, one right on top of the other. Everytime it prompted me to overwrite I clicked Yes To All.

I then installed the Vengence mod.

Then I placed the German.slf I think I got from an old Proedit install (although it might also be available for download through that great german site Bearpit listed) in the Data folder.

I started it from the .exe and it loaded without a hitch.

All of this I did following CatSpam's walkthrough contained in this thread which explains it in great detail and even provides links to the all in one patches (thanx man!). He's the guy you should thank for bringing this mod to English speaking players.

He also mentions a patch Fonts folder he added to the Data directory but I don't know where he got that. I'm hoping he'll chime in and let me know. The game plays very good but you can't understand what the new characters are saying and all the weapons descriptions, etc. are in German. I really do hope someone comes up with at least an English text patch for this mod so us unilingural dimwits can really enjoy this great piece of work.

I hope all that was easy enough to follow.

I got mine to load finally, as Khor1255 and CatSpam did. For those who don't have it, the german.slf file is found here, in the ja2.exe 0.95-beta file zip

Well,
New guns, new maps, a german speaking colonel... Hot damn, I think that it works. Love the militia placement and new titles given to the teams turns. Smile Maps also look very nice. Looks like I've got to find some new hiding places and strategies.

Hey, I'm back and enjoying the response. If you got the game to run then it looks like you got all the files you need. The fonts patch is just one of the patches with largefonts.sti in it. In fact, that is the only file in the patch.

It can be found on the JA2 Basis forum. I found it on this link:

http://jagged.gamigo.de/ja_forum/showthread.php?t=15524&highlight=largefont1.sti

The third post, from Nitrat, has a link to a file called NK_Data.zip

This is simply the largefonts.sti file that was mentioned before. I found this patch easy to apply because it had the file in the correct location (in a folder called 'fonts').

the location to apply largefonts.sti is \data\fonts\largefonts.sti (in a folder called 'fonts' which goes in the game 'data' folder

Well, I've played it a bit and am enjoying the fights. It is a little disconcerting to see everything in a foreign language, but I mostly remember where all the buttons are so I am finding I can play the game okay. But I am sure I am missing clues to the quests. I landed in Omerta with a mission briefing (letter) and no idea who I am supposed to deliver it to (or where to find them).

I think I can figure out the weapons and items, but the NPC's are going to be the big problem for us English speaking fans.

My thanks to The Scorpion for all his hard work. I have wandered around Omerta a bit and it really has the feel that I've landed in a war zone. Cool.

Fang die Kugeln! (Catch the Bullets!)

So here's the thought progression:

1. Oh crap, it's a tank!
2. Ok, it's not a tank, but an APC.
3. I am safe behind these trees.
4. That is quite the MG.
5. I don't seem to have an RPG.
6. Ouch, Retreat!
7. Mines?
8. ......

Scorp, you are devious. Smile

Have encountered one bug so far. Ammo isn't always what it should be when you unload the gun. I've had 5.56 come out of the MP5A3 and AP rounds come out of my former hollowpoint clip (with the Bizon it "changes" the ammo to the Toka Rev clip pic and makes it into AP when I use the unload feature, seems to work if I replace the clip without manually unloading first--clip swapping).
