Phew, got it to work, this is how:
1. a fresh installation of gold 1.12
2. add the german patch (JA2allinone) *edit* Yes, I didn't see that there's a Gold version but it seem to work fine anyway. *edit*
3. add the vengeance mod
4. add the german.slf into the DATA folder
5. add the Largefont1.sti (NK-DATA.ZIP) into the DATA\FONTS folder
Thanks to Azazel I got on to the right track as I had the German.slf in the GERMAN folder as earlier suggested.
Best of luck

I tried the path laid out by Hedmen, some slight vagueness still, which of the two german allinone's do you use, the reular or the one for gold? In any event, I was able to get a german version of the game up, but there were no changes made to the mercs or thier equipment. In addition, I could not find a data\fonts folder to install nk-data to. Any suggestions?

I hate to keep pestering on this but it is frustrating to read about folks who have the game up and running and I can't get it done. I'm no computer whiz, but I have been able to get all the other mods up and running in the past by following explicit step by step instructions. If anyone will take pity on folks like me and give precise, step by step instructions that assume nothing except the person following them can read, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again.

Masguy (should I change it to Whiney?)

hi masguy

the "fonts" folder must be created, it doens`t exist in a fresh install

if you followed the order given above, then you should see different weapons/ ammo and the like

if you don`t see any changes to ja2, i guess you eed to paste ja2 vengeance on top of it again

because step 3 (according to hedman) can be applied after step 4 and 5 and should not make any diference

if you paste the mod files over it once more, you should definitely see a difference (blue-ish main menu background, crossed swords screen, new labtob bakcground, mercenaries have different equipment and so on)

1)Install Ja2,version 1.12.If you have it,you don't need to pre-patch it!
2)Install Vergeltungen over it
3)Unzip GERMAN.slf from this archive.
http://jagged.gamigo.de/count.php?l=/download/files/JA2_Beta_0.95_DE.zip (you can unzip it directly to the data folder)
3bis)Copy it in the DATA folder if you unzipped it to another folder than DATA.
That's all.It's all I did!
What the hell is so hard?
Have fun!I KNOW I do.That's what I've been waiting all this year for.
Scorpion & Co.,which ones do you want brought to level 10 first?

Well what you did may not be hard but it did not work for me. I am still getting cannot ini large font.fl message. When you use a phrase like "Install Vergeltungen over it" that you mean the vengence file. I did precisely what you did, twice and came up with no game. When you use the phrase "install" do you mean "unzip" or "install". Because all I can do is unzip. If there is an installtion screen or choice for this mod, it has not come up for me.

I have noticed that I wind up with a number of JA2.exe files when I do the install, I have clicke don all of them and encountered problems.

Another thought, are there two release versions of JA2 gold? I have to patch mine to get to 1.12 should I be doing the german patch to do this?

Thanks again.

the largefont/small font problem is a specific problem, not one of ja2 vengeance

if you keep receiving that error message, you should get yourself a working fonts.slf or extract those files that cannot be initiated into a new folder ja2/data/fonts

and yes, you can only unzip ja2 vengeance, no install interface (like this, it is possible to have a look at the files before without installing)
ja2 gold is ja2 1.12

if i read it correctly, this is what you have on CD

so...

for azazel, it was apparently not necessary to patch the 1.12 version

for you, it is necessary to get those fonts to work

I had the same experience as Azazel.

1. Did a fresh install of JA2 Gold;

2. patched it to 1.12;

3. unzipped Vengeance to the JA2 directory;

4. unzipped german.slf to the data directory;

5. played without problems.

Likewise. I played the first sector without a problem. This is a good mod, the problem is I don't know German. From reading the intro it seems similar enough that it would be playable as is. If one of you German speakers would post a few spoilers about specific plot changes it would be a big help.

Weird. It played without problems for me for maybe 6 sessions, then I got the large font error. Copying largefonts1.sti to ja2/data/fonts solved it though. Looks like that is a necessary file.

These encrypted zips with game information, am I missing something? I typed the (carefully checked) password for no 1 and had a wrong password message.

Hi

The zips may cause problems... use winrar 3.5 to extract it. try the first letter capitalzed and non-capitalized (is not distinguishable in ja2 vision)

Ok, now that I'm halfway across Arulco...

Things I love:

-New weapons, great areas with amazing features (you know how to stretch the level design), and fun new items.
-Tanks. Lots of tanks.
-Larger cities.
-Need detector for mines, no divination.

Things to watch out for:

BUGS:
-Oronegro has a few issues with rooftops. Namely, being able to fire at the people on top from the floor below. I've only encountered it here, but will look out for other places. This is probably due to the fact that there are much more complex rooftops here than intended (multi-layered). Places with sandbags and the entry at the off-shore are the two most noticeable.
-XM16M4 is not silenced on burst.
-Daewoo can accomodate both an ACOG and POSP scope at the same time.
-Daewoo not recognized as a gun by Tony (gunsmith in San Mona).
HAZARDS:
-Tanks. Lots of them.
-Mines. Lots of them (NEED metal detector...).

That's it for now, look for edits in the future. Till then, I'm going back in for more! Ich werd' gleich zurueck!

--EDIT: Ok, my IMP (BSE) Merc no longer sounds like he's sneaking, but rather looking for things to step on and break. He is a Lvl (Erf) 8 Schleichen Experte (Stealth Expert). Any ideas why he is so loud? I have tried dropping all weight, re-loading savegames and still he persists in stick-stomping and grass-thrashing exercises. Still have no idea if it's just merc-side or if it's actually heard by the enemy...

thx for the feedback lochmacher

-most assault rifles can have both, acog and POSP 24
even if it seems unrealistic, it`s the closest to standard ja2, where most guns could have sniper scope and laserpointer at once

i`ve had reports on rooftop bugs in oronegro offshore but didn`t quite know where and how to fix them. it`s indeed a problem with different heights of rooftops...

if you have a fast way to upload a screenshot or savegame maybe...?

there will be a couple of guns not recognized by tony, this has to do with the slots that i have overwritten

the movie and translation and stuff: i might be wrong about the play of words... i though they were relating to a movie (german) with a similar title because "der unbelebte Mann" is a very strange and uncommen (unused) structure in german

so instead of only making a translation of "Pant suit loretta when the men are away" they added something extra to it

but really... i could be waaaay wrong there. maybe the movie is newer than the ja2 game anyway...

@ Scorpion,

Thanks for taking the time to help those of us who don't speak German too well. Only 2 years of high school German classes (15 years ago) and
3 trips to Germany since leave me challenged, even with my pocket translator and bablefish. I know there are plenty of others who share these challenges. Any help here is appreciated.

A small request, as I am having problems translating all the item descriptions. Is there a list of items and how they are created and what they do? I am looking for a use for the rail with foregrip, and the rail with aimpoint, as well as others.

@bastage

I made it work using the original JA2 with a patch I picked somewhere (I don't remember where) that patched v1.03 to v1.12 gold. It also worked with v1.06 english, patched with the german all-in one patch, added the german.slf to the data directory, then applying the mod. There is a discussion on this at the beginning of this thread with links to the files.

OK. Fresh install of original JA2. Patch 1.07. Patch German allinone. Vegeance installed. Put German.slf in Data. Put Fonts file in Data. The game runs in German with new weapons and parachute drop. My IMP speaks English and all the Merc's are all original JA2. What is wrong? I tried plain old 1.03 + mod + german.slf and that's it, no gold or german patches, the Mercs are still original, English speaking.

combinations:

there are some new combos that need figured out.

SPOILER:

the foregrip needs to be combined with picatinny rail and Aimpoint

this will make an attachment that works like ja2 original barrel extension. can be fitted to smg`s and carbines. gives the m4a1, XM-8 and comparable carbines the range of an assault rifle if in good condition. might fall off though (sorry...)

PSo-1 and 1pn51 combines to a new item called "pso-1 with nspu-3"

this works as ja2 Rod and spring

the nspu-3 might also work in other combinations

if you ever find a side mounting rail in the game, you shoudl be able to combines a pso-1 wiht it to an POSP*24 Sniper scope. But AFAIR the item didn`t show up in the game

i can`t yet say. need more info. what about the AIM mercenaries, do their weapons match with the ammo they have?

did you start a new game after installing ja2 vengeance over ja2?

ja2 vengeance was the 120 or 170mb large download. vengeance NK is like 40mb. maybe you confused them? still, these MERC guys were already in NK so that can`t be the problem

okay... that`s weird

i`m trying to find out which files you are missing or what mistake happened while installing...

so, you have no new Faces at MERC? and they still have their old names (Gumpy is gumpy, flo is flo?)
but the AIM guy`s have matching items?

and you did off course start a new game, right?

if the weapons are correct an no AIM guy has weird equipment, this means weaponmod and prof.dat work

but prof.dat should as well make gaston, wildcat and stogie work

what about NPC`s. did you find these NPC`s: joey in b9 (is hiding in a small room) "Carola" in a10 sublevel?

what faces have they?

i must say i`ve never really watched this and don`t know whether this is any different in newer versions of the game.

Scorpion, problem that Jay Dee mentioned is that we have to adjust ALL options again every time the game is started, including music, sound and speech. In regular JA2 you do it only first time you launch the game after installation.
