On the first page of this thread there is a walkthrough on how to get it to install on an English version. I'm almost positive it will work for you'res as well.
There are a few methods described but I suggest you use mine which is actually CatSpam's since this way is the simplest and I haven't had any problem with it.

Good luck.

This is what I did:

- Updated my Dutch version with the missing Tilecache data.

- Installed the all-in-one zip file

- Installed the Vengeance zip file

- Added the German.slf file in the Data folder

This is what I got:

- a untill now seemingly working version of the mod.

- I've got Dutch text and subtitles (sometimes)

- I've got English AND German vocal dialogues

- A new face with MERC (no new faces with AIM though)

- Found some new NPC's willing to join. (Joey, TNT, a mother and her son)

So, I think I'm stuck with a workable hybrid version of the mod, or is it supposed to work like this ?

Any way, cheers for making the mod and double cheers for helping me with the installing of it.

Yeah,"workable hybrid of the mod".
AIM mercenaries spoke English, and Miguel,in my case.
MERCs speak German,as well as the locals.
Really,I wouldn't exactly resume the playing to "Have gun. Will travel.",but it's not difficult to guess what they're saying...
Go in what used to be the rebel hideout.
"Spoilers"?
Joey(B9),Frazzler(C or D11),Fish and Eagle somewhere between "Drassen" and "Alma",Sparky and Sandman(C5).12 more positions to fill with whoever you want,if you take those 6.
Personally, I passed on Cyborg.
And Ilya.

Igor or Ivan would have probably place his little balls in a jar,on formol, as soon as they found out the deadeye they trusted goes psycho.
To send to his mother, saying there's no way he can be a Dolvich!

(Speaking for myself:Dolviches-lean,mean killing machine, yes.Lethal machines.Perfect soldiers.Professionals that obey orders. But do they really enjoy killing?Money is good...Saying killing and sadism and insubordination are good is already another thing.)

Hey,Scorpion,just an idea:
How should we proceed if we wanted Matsuko(a reporter) to be in "Malino"?She wouldn't give anything back for the tape,BUT
an international TV report on the arulcan penitenciary regime would really shake some consciences and make people loyal to the "authorities" take some distance...turn towards the freedom fighters.
10-20% plus on loyalty might be allright. Smile

Here's a BUG:
Day 42:just took the Malino oil rig and recovered one artefact. All the faces of my mercenaries(Maddog,Wolf,Fox,Grizzly,Lynx,Ice,Blood,Reaper,
Igor,Ilya,Ivan,IMP Iuri) are "shadowed".
Foggy appearence.
Items dropped on the ground have an unhealthy red glittering.
It all started attempting to take M9(loyalty in Malino 42%).I shoot the first enemy and try to end the turn:press D,try to push the button(shadowed too):NOTHING.Can't end turn.
Ended game.Restarted.
I order the retreat.Skyrider takes the IMP(Iuri) to Oronegro with the chalice:when he dropes out of the chopper,in map screen, the face looks normal, but as soon as I go tactical,to give Yanni the chalice, the face is "shadowed" again.IMP passes the artefact to Yanni,he makes the speech and the time cursor appears. It doesn't go away.
Can't figure out what caused this...
I try everything I can think of.Reload and reload.I go to Tixa, the same problem:can't end turn.
The Game runned like a dream...and all of a sudden something like this happens...
Save available.
@The Scorpion:you have mail.That "spielstand06".

i had a look at it

i don`t know what causes this but i guess the savegame is corruptet

why were nearly all your mercs on "student" in that savegame?

i`m sorry for that inconvinience. i have not encountered that bug before

sorry if our mod turns more and more buggy and frustrating for you

probably a problem with the artefact item itself or rather the code that is connected wiht it. do you have a savegame before you recover the artefact? maybe there is a glitch because in the original game, there is only one artefact and it is loacted in another sector

Yup,it's probably a glitch.(has more to do with graphics than code,in my totally unprofessional opinion)
I've had this kind of "glitch" years ago, playing 1.03.exe.I don't believe it has anything to do with the artefact.Back then,it appeared when you sold items to Keith or Tony.Too much, too often.
The fact I "abused" this feature of the game, needing money from selling weapons and armour,in order to sustain all those expensive mercs must have triggered this bug.
It's like a warning,a way of saying(of the game designers):"hey, dude, are you craizy? What the hell you need all that money and that entire collection of AIM talent for?" Smile

No,I can't reproduce this bug.I don't have a saved game before that moment.(Maybe some other player will pay attention to this, and save more often)

Oh,the mercs were on "student" because you have all the benefits of "practice" BUT without loosing energy. Some players never allow a mercenary to sleep, putting him on "student" after he-she looses energy training militia, repairing, medicating, marching, etc.(Saves time on training the team, mercs are always at full energy when an unnexpected attack occurs on a town they're in...)
Nope,I didn't "abuse" this Wink

There are explainations of what the NPCs are saying posted throughout this thread or you can use Babelfish (an internet language conversion tool) to help you.
I'm not sure if anyone is making a full text companion to this mod but I really hope to see that some day.
It's a really exceptional piece of work.

there are various reasons why we made that mod in german

first of all, back when we started, none of the team was a member here

i only had the german release version, so thats what i had to work with

secondly, we had no native (or native-like) english speakers in the (rather small) team that created ja2 vengeance

i have been working on an english mod and it is very hard for me. Think of writing item descriptions in a foreign language. Or dialogues

and then, find some 10 or more english speaking friends that would speak the lines for custom NPC`s / RPC`s

(the point is, if i made an english mod, it would suck for those who understand and speak english natively due to my bad english, due to lack of english voice actors and so on)

now for ja2 vengeance it is simple: the mod is played very similarly than the original ja2. If you follow the instructions in the beginning of the threads concerning ja2 vengeance, you`ll get some hints as to how to proceed in the first couple of sectors

for the rest of the game you can proceed as you want, the story doesn`t require you to do very special things. the games ends when deidranna`s boudydouble is killed

@Khor

i`m not going to do it myself, and nobody offered any help to me. i`m rather thinking of adapting the maps from ja2 vengeance to the new 1.13 "engine" (cuz 1.13 doesn`t have custom maps)

maybe also some items

If you'd like me to do text renderings of quest related speech/descriptions I'm definately in to that. I can also try to do some voice files although I have never done this successfully due to not ever focusing on this part of my project for more than a few minutes. If you could give me some tips here I'd definately give it a shot.

As for porting you're mod to the 1.13 Version, I think this would be the best possible solution to some of you're item mod limitations and would help add some real flavor to the whole 1.13 project. I've been immersed in the .xmls since the beginning so if there is anything I could help you with here I'd definately be up for it.

You have my e-mail address. Just let me know.

the thing is that some of my maps become pretty pointless without the matching NPC`s (e.g Head Miners)

but if the 1.13 guys externalize mines, prof.dat and all that stuff i`d certainly go for it

i`m busy at the moment but i appreciate your help. first i need to figure a good concept for this. i mean just copying maps and deleting all wrong items and placing new items is not very creative work so i`m probably going to do a lot of different stuff before

but as the 1.13 project is still developing, i have time to do any adjustments

but really, the people like 1.13 very much. so if i can come up with ja2 vengeance 1.13, that`d be damn cool

Right. And until the project becomes a bit more settled (that is to say no sweeping structure changes every few weeks), you may have to redo alot of work anyway.
The good thing is that every day you work with the 1.13 you gain experience in it's somewhat unique modding techniques.

Try making some weapons with the 1.13. I mean really try to press the envelope of things that are previously very hard or even impossible with previous versions. You'll quickly see the huge benefits of modding from this .exe.
I really think it's the build all future mods should be built from.

There is an obscure .dat file called Cities.dat that I got to swap town names all around the map. It wasn't useful in changing the starting sector but I have a hunch it may be usefull for assigning one town's quest structure to another. I hope you have more time or luck working with this file than I've been able to. There might be a treasure trove right there in Mugsy's Tabledata file.

What I do when I encounter an NPC who appears to have something interesting to say is:

1) Look them up in ProEdit; their ID number is located right beside their name. For instance, Tyra is number 129.

2) Use JA2EDT.exe to open up the associated NPC files. These files are located in DATA/npcdata and are nnn.edt where nnn is the ID number. For instance , Tyra's file is 129.edt. Be sure to identify the file type as "Speech, also UB".

3) For each entry in the file, I copy the german text and paste into babelfish. After I translate it, I paste it back.

4) After I save the file, I can run Vengence and have the npc use the translated speech.

Unfortunately, Babelfish does not do a particularily good job of translation, although you can get the gist of it. For instance, here is a translation of one of Tyra's speeches:

"Hereby they will be able themselves authorizing. The weapons, which look for it, are hidden northeast from here in the jungle"

That's great Bane. By the time you finish the mod it sounds like you could have some very useful .edt sets we could later edit to get more accurate English translations.
I was just doing it the lazy way, writing it down then Babblefishing it. You're method actually holds a key to universal translation.

Thanx man.

So,what do we do next?
Intentions are fine, results and visible things would be better.
Personally, only had to use the old dictionary a couple of times, but I have an old friend that got Vengeance to work aaand...didn't played it because..."it's in German".
I said:
"hey, that is pure...,I'd understand if the of Fish reminded you movie intoxicated and english centered bozo, Wink of those SS chars you've seen in countless Hollywood movies on WW2.A "clichee".I'd understand if you preferred a dozen of battle-hardened AIM mercenaries for the down and dirty -all speaking english-
thinking that children and old indians are to be placed in an army only as a last resort, when lacking quality men(helas, all dead).Fine, don't make your army look like your image on the 1945 germans! But not playing it,?C'mon..."

By the way,the new mercs are starting to grow on me,especially "TNT"-the one I had missed im my previous games.

y`know, me personally, i wouldn`t have let "Fish`s" "Jawohl" pass. i got pissed when i hear it, honestly, but speech files are realy hard to get so i didn`t delete it

i deleted other stuff when one character was supposed to be racist. i change him to be non racist and delete the racist speechfiles.

i dunno... just didn`t wanna hear this crap. call it censorship or whatever

I was really positive to trying out this mod until I crashlanded on the german.
It felt like hitting a brick wall at 300 KPH in a small VW Golf GTi (Not that I have tried).
Anyways, I guess I will wait and see if there will be an english version later on, a lot of good mods out there, too bad most of them are either Russian or German.

I could do some German but it is so rusty now I hardly remember anything, to make matters worse I am in the process of replacing it with Japanese...

Good work though, looks interresting but it is out of my books though.

i had an emphasize on it that the mod can easily be played without understanding everything

However there is somebody making english subtitles, weapon descriptions, quest logs, e-mail info and the like

this will only include info judged important
It is in the making RIGHT NOW and should be available soon

this will definitely help you guys. because it is really not that hard. after all, it`s still ja2

btw we`re also making a patch/ realism upgrade for the german version.

hi swatman88

ja2 vengeance is bigger than NK, contains more custom characters and improved weapon availability as well as a more customized story
these are two different mods, you don`t need to downlaod both

you can get vengeance from those URL`s in my signature

if you want to play it in english with an english install of ja2, please follow the detailed installation information given on the first pages of this thread
then apply the english patch over it

that should work

you can alsways ask here if things are unclear

now the prob..i am playing with JA gold version 1.10 and have applied the mod (correctly i hope) and have used the subtitles mod for english. the problem is that the ammo the mercs start with is not for the weapons they have! grizzlys gun says its a usp45cal (something like that im not a gun bunny) and he has .45 mag but dont go in the gun! is it because i have installed wrong? help!!

hi gentleman adventurer

you`re apparently using the wrong exe

make sure that the exe you finally run the game with is the exe delivered in the ja2 vengeance mod download archive.

usually, you have gold, then apply the vengeance mod over it, and then the patch for english subtitles

what i`d try in your case is extracting the ja2 exe that comes in the download file from vengeance mod over your current exe (you might want to back it up first, i dunno)

that should work

I've really been looking forward to playing this, but held off until an English text translation came out - I always find the results of babelfish (apltly named) more confusing than the German.... Very Happy

Anyway, great mod, really enjoying it.

SPOILER REQUEST

1) Who is "Big Red"? Found him in the airport sector of Tangart - couldn't work out what he was saying, he kept turning hostile so I popped him. Have I screwed up?

2) TNT - is he the equivalent of the ex-IRA man in original JA2? Sells explosives and can be recruited? If so, remind me how to recruit - high leadership?

Cheers

are you using the ja2.exe that came with the download archive?

because if you have the new pictures but old text and values there was probably a problem with the installation and you`re not using the correct exe or there is/ are file/s missing.

see the beginning of this thread or maybe contact some ot the guys who were able to figure a way to make the mod work for them

First off, thanks to all concerned with the Vengeance mod - brilliant!
Got mine working after fresh install of JA2 (UK),patched to v.1.07
Loaded Vengeance, German.slf,English patch.
Seem to have a problem though:
no mercs at AIM base B9, no Carola at A10.
Am I supposed to see oil rigs? only get ore carts etc..
Got the feeling I am missing stuff here!
Any hints or help would be appreciated. :whoknows:

carola is in a10 sublevel, you can enter it in the building in the center of the map north od the river

@decado2

vengeance NK is basicly an older, smaller version of ja2 vengeance. The point is that the host didn`t follow my names for the two mods

the vengeance NK mod is different, carries less customation than

ja2 vengeance which is the newer version (the english subtitles also only work with this version)

the latter has been reduced from some 120mb to 60mb by compressing the custom sound files

For some reason i cant find the head miner in Salinas. Ive checked everywhere and even in the mine where all the other miners are, but no head miner. Could someone tell me where he is. Also after i took the central sam site and trained millita there the airspace the central sam protects is still hostile. Has anyone else expierienced this? This is an awesome mod, in my opinion its the best ive ever played. Hats off to the scorpion for this one. Great job.

hi SempFi86

there is no mine in salinas! former balime (melino) has an oilrig instead!

check the strategic map screen. there is an icon that will display the mines. This will reveal where the mines are now. some of them have been dislocated outside towns or to different towns

the bug with the sam site has not yet been reported to me. I have no idea what could possibly cause this. did the enemy blow up the SAM rockets while defending the sector?

thx for the positive feedback SempFi86
