Now let me preface this with this: I've played JA2UB maps where the enemy drops everything, if the enemy has a pistol, he drops it and the ammo he's carrying. I tend to dislike those maps because you end up with too much "junk" in a sector when you're done there (8 .38 pistols, 20 nibs of .38 ammo, etc.). The balance/money issue comes up too when you can sell all that stuff.

I just wondered, what do people think about an INI "drop all" option in JA2? I've always been conflicted about this. I like the balance of the game the way it is; but if an enemy was shooting at me with an M-16 (and I only have pistols), I would want it (especially if I defeated him using only those pistols).

By putting in a "drop all" as an INI option, people could play the game how they wanted, unless there's a better solution to this (drop 50%, drop only weapons)?

What are your thoughts?

I'm all for a "drop all" option, but that basically requires a scenario where the enemies' stats are boosted to be similar to your mercs' stats.

As to junk in sector - having sector "pockets" be of infinite size and have them "auto-merge" similar items may be an easy solution. And perhaps more flexible removal of stuff from the sector.

The drop all function would be a great addition. But with options, with the ability to say drop all firearms/weapons, a drop everthing and drop ammo definitions and it'd be golden!

With moving the stuff, making vehicles have an inventory capability would be useful, using a different interface to the mercs you could have say 4 sets of 4 large item boxes, which would be able to carry an ample amount of kit for the average team. Maybe allowing a road only vehicle quite early then a roam everywhere Hummer or Jeep later on.

Auto merge and more intelligent item handling in sector inventories with the ability to hold up to 10,000 items per sector.

I think I might be on to the part in the code that determines vehichle placement. I'm not even close to being able to really understand the syntax of C but was thinking of looking for the movement code of mercs (in tactical mode), copying that and superimposing it to the vehichles in tactical mode part.
Inventory would (of course) follow shortly. I'm looking for what determines speed of movement (in tactical) and bumping that up. This is just awesome! My brother writes code for machines (not C unfortunately) and he tells me there really are no limits to how much you can write into a game provided you have enough time and access to therapy. Women work fine in that capacity.

Please note that we are trying to stay away from adding individual mods as options. I personally feel that this puts too much burden on the user to figure out what everything is. What we are doing is separating radical new mods from plain JA2. Right now we have "Platinum" mode that you can choose at the start of the game. This mode contains all the features the members of the project liked.

Re: Vehicle inventory

I've thought of this even before the source came out. Rest assured, if I don't get hit by a truck, you will see this feature in Platinum at some point in time.

Digicrab,
Do you mean that we will be able to use the vehicles IE. the Hummer to haul equipment and supplies?

I'll up the anty of that last question by adding; why not make vehichles moveable in tactical mode? Of course you would need to counterbalance this by giving the enemy vehichles as well.
I think I hear the clinking of tank treads now...

Moving vehicles during tactical mode would require new vehicle animations, wouldn't it? Seems like a thorny problem.

@Rude Dog

Yes, I hope to make it so that you can load up the jeep with spare supplies. I always wondered why I had to carry that mortar in my backpack around with me everywhere. =)

Why would you want to do this?

@Digicrab: so you get either all or nothing? In that case I would limit "Platinum" to basically bug fixes (of which there could be plenty) and perhaps some very obvious enhancements that everyone can agree on. But arguable stuff like increased line of site or precise CtH display would be better as options. Just my opinion.

Why would you want vehichles to move in tactical mode? Really? Is that a real question?
For starters, there's the fact that tanks can't even move toward where the action is. Second, when bloodcats attack you are somehow forced out of you're vehichle (and the cover it would provide you). And another reason is why the hell not? This could provide another dimetion. Right?

You guys are going to hate me on this one, but I don't like the ides of moving vehicles in tactical screen.
Yeah, I'd be the first one on the block mowing women, children, and red shirts down for the fun of it. The amount of extra animations for not only the vehicles but for the victims would be enormous! There would have to be anims of the people trying to get out of the way and then either flying through the air like a rag doll that got spit out of a Rottweiller's mouth in mid shake or getting crushed under the wheels of the car, truck, or tank.
My vote is NO MOVING VEHICLES, only for that reason.

Here's a thought, why don't you gather all the modifications that you make in the game -resolution, moving vehicles, etc- put them into a mod, and make a second options menu for the mod options? This would give people the opportunity to choose which of the mods they want to play with during the game. :whoknows:

@JSF

Because we are not making a MOD, we are making the source code more easily mod-able by / for others.

The changes we are making are being done so that YOU can change things the way you want them. Making item lists, and weapons lists, city locations etc, external from the .exe .

The resolution change is just that, it does not give more color depth, or nicer images, it just allows people to display the game at a larger resolution ( for laptops, large monitors etc.).

Adding an inventory to the Hummer etc. has been wanted since the game originally came out and I hope it will make it into a future release of the code by this group. The same is true for the burst mode being uncapped, the CtH curser, the ability to relocate cities and SAM sites, allowing the END GAME trigger to be changed etc.

Full Auto?!? Please, please, please?!?! And a pretty good example of mobile vehicles is already out there...Fallout Tactics. You gotta love that tank, with a firing weapon. Maybe if the vehicles move, then it would be possible to add mutliple positions for weapons, man that .50 and the main gun. *Grins evilly*

How about ammo packs or something? Like maybe a pouch that can strap on to your merc's leg and you can store clips and smaller ammo (shells, speedloaders), but probably no missles?

Just for the sake of throwing in my 2c - Im against vehicles in tactical mode, yeah all for em in a 3D game - but we dont have the source code for one of them do we...

For those who are keen to mod their own version of 'enemies drop everything':
build\tactical\inventory choosing.c
The percentage chance for enemies dropping stuff is defined right at the top, with helpful comments and all.
I havent walked right through this bit of the code yet - but a simple change there and a recompile should get you where you want to go.
