As part of his changes, Wildfire tweaked the mercs quite a bit. Here are some of the more notable changes:

AIM MERCS
Lynx - He is now NO/AW instead of NO/Elec...a *much* more useful combination.
Vicki - For some reason, her MECH went from 94 (one of the best in AIM) to a pitiful 56.
Igor - He is now ST/AW instead of just Stealth. He also gained a few MRK pts and a LVL. Much better.
Shadow - Pretty much the same but he now starts with a P90!
Fidel - Very much improved. His traits are now ST/LP instead of just H2H *and* his stats are increased: DX,WIS,MECH as well as a LVL.
Sidney - is now Throw/Teach instead of Throwing Expert. Given his low Leadership rating, it's not really an improvement.
Ice - much the same...gains a few pts in EXP and MED but looses some MECH. However, he does gain a LVL.
Spider - stats are almost the same BUT she now has a few points in EXP and MECH (she used to have 0). This allows her to increase these skills and gain LVLs. Since landmines are so common, it's easy to get one and train up to EXP99. This will bring Spider from LVL1 to LVL4.
Cliff - Drops a few MED pts, but gains some traits. He is now Thief/RoofBonus instead of nothing at all.
Bull - Is now H2H/Martial instead of H2H expert. Interesting but could be buggy...Bull is a big male character and I *think* that only small male characters can use Martial arts...
Hitman - ST/Teach instead of Throw/Teach. Also gains a *lot* of DX (74 from 40) and some MRK (96 from 88).
Buzz - MRK drops a bit (88 from 96) but DX goes up (78 from 47) and MED is now non-zero.
Static - Changes from NO/Elec to NO/LP. Also loses some MECH.
Len - Gains a LVL and some LDR but loses some MECH and MED. Probably a net gain.
Danny - Is now NO/Amb instead of just Amb. He also gains ST/DX/LDR/MRK and his EXP is now non-zero. On the other hand, his MED drops a bit and his AGI drops from a god-like 99 to a mere 76.
Scully - Is now AW/Knife instead of Knifing Expert.
Nails - Is now NO/LP instead of just LP.
MD - Explosives is now non-zero so, like Spider, he can easily train up and gain LVLs.

MERC Mercs
Biff - is now a NO instead of a Teacher
Flo - is now a Thief instead of a Teacher

LOCAL MERCS
Ira - Gains some ST and MRK and goes from Teaching Expert to Amb/AW. She's no longer just a militia trainer; she's a killing machine!
Dimitri - Hasn't changed much, but he is now hireable at the start of the game (you no longer need to do the food quest to release him).
Robot - I don't know anybody who uses the Robot, but if you do, it's improved from MRK80 to MRK99.

Most of the changes appear to be for the better. In particular, many mercs have gained AW trait which is useful given the number of decent LMGs in the game and the elimination of the "burst bug". In addition, all of the medics can now learn EXP and train up.

Thanks. I thought I was losing my mind/memory. I still might be, but at least it's not because of the Wildfire.

Fidel has been in Jagged Alliance since the beginning & should have stats equal to or better then Gus Tarballs who was not in the first game of the JA series at all. I always tweak the Merc's stats in Pro Edit to my liking before starting a fresh game. I think this ability to tweak Merc stats should be given to the player as a built in pre start game utility.

Miguel and Carlos as well as Dimitri may be recruited much earlier in Wildfire than in regular JA2. I think I recruited Miguel and Carlos after solving the "food-to-Omerta"-quest.

I liked it better when Flo, Biff and Ira were teachers. But if you don't need militia in Wildfire then I guess it doesn't matter.

But militia is crucial, because if you lose one sector town loyalty is in the shitter. I haven't actually seen any difference in the theif skill... Seems like she steals just as well as my other mercs, which is pretty crappy.

The problem with Igor's change is that he's too damn expensive, I always play with the bottom rung AIM's, now he's not one of them. Also Danny was awesome with his 99 agi, now he's just mediocre and not really worth a hire, except for maybe his health.

Ah...money...well I forgot to factor that in.

The way I play, I only hire AIM mercs after I've taken a mine. So if some mercs are more expensive, well, it doesn't matter...I just have to sit on the mine a few more days.

Militia is indeed crucial. In the beginning, I train up my leadership skill (and Ira's skill as well) for a full month. This gives me enough leadership to quickly train up a sector of militia, even if neither of us has the teaching skill...

Later on, when I hire AIM mercs, Wolf makes a pretty good militia trainer along with Fox, Stephen and even Ice since they all have the teaching skill. They are also excellent frontline mercs as well so basically they attack sectors at night and train militia during the day.

Thanks for that initial post,man.
Must contradict you(again).Not only Igor.
I see now what you meant with that lockpicking skill, never (really)felt the need for it in normal JA2...And using crowbars is a big waste of improvement possibilities, with that door density!

Gasket is now a must have, since it has medical...(1!)
Playing it for the first time and Spider and "LION"(IMP-night ops expert) were the first choices. Those medical skills and "far-seeing" abilities saved my but!Shadow has better wisdom and the P90 in every game-here's an offer I couldn't resist! He's in,but for one day.
Too bad those MP7s seem to beat the P in every aspect...

I read the above quote a number of times before I realized what you meant... When I said "Igor only got better", it means that "Igor got better, not worse". I think you read it as "Only Igor, and not any other mercs, got better". Seeing that you are from Romania and probably are not a native english speaker, it's understandable that you mistook my intent.

?

Thanks for the correction.
In my opinion all Igor has gained is...some dust in our eyes!Numbers, nothing else!
Also,I think the real winners of this game are the ones like Gasket,Bubba,Spider, etc.Because they gained quality, not simple quantity.
By having those 0.0 skills corrected.

He likes them edited. What's it to you?

I remember I had a disproportionate "anti-cheat" reaction,a few months ago,against an otherwise valuable contributor,whose presence I miss now.
But in spite of that reaction,I did not use your majuscules and language.

I think Blackmac is too good of a JA Series player to grace our presence. Maybe we should create a topic called Bragger, I'm the best JA player to ever play the game and anyone who plays the game the way they want to to make it fun for themselves can't join my topic.

TSK, TSK, TSK, WELL blackmac, you really are a Braying Jackass I see. You are nothing but a Troll looking for someone to argue with and that is how you get people to respond. You are probably a little kid wearing short pants and sucking on his thumb while he tries to sound like a big shot know it all. If you are an adult then you have never learned how to get along with others, or you are simply a complete jackass like I called you a while back when you first tried to pick a fight.

I've been playing this game since you were a "little kid wearing short pants and sucking on his thumb". From the way you kissed-up to someone who admitted to exaggerating - that sounds like a newbie to me. I never tried to pick a fight. I just expressed my thoughts on the way the game should be played - not meaning that you have to follow it. That's why it is called a Forum.

Common now, people here have been bragging all along that they finished the game (without coming clean on cheating) and you haven't said a negative word to them. Does that mean that you're not only a kiss-up, but also a suck-up? You're probably aged 20 now and still in high-school because you don't suck enough up with your teachers. Or have you? That's why they're keeping you around?

Now that's picking a fight ...

Blackmac, I think there are differences when talking about controversive things, you know. You should be in this forum long enough that you've realized that folks here are really Ok - never had any other experiences, and god knows I had some statements, some people didn't agree on. Btw greets to Dstranger if you should read this  .
And they WILL ever appreciate you contributing to the forum with your opinion.
However, there are certain ways of talking, and questions about HOW you say things.
And with all respect, your post seem to lack somehow, well, politness and room for others to express their opinions as well.

- Forsaken

Try to keep it down, we're all here because we have one thing in common ... and by the way this thing is great ... so lets get on worshiping Ja2 and stop this fuss.

Point well taken man. Thanks for the blunt comment. You've been here long as well, I pressume, dating back to the original JA2 days. Back then, there were more people who appreciated someone who have not cheated in their games, or at least, respected their way of playing. I come back here after two years and newbies react violently to my way of playing just because they can't raise their level of play.

As a request from a fellow old guardian of the game, I shall stop my vicious comments and refrain from retaliating to provocations.

Long live JA gamers around the world!

Personally, I think it's fine that you play the game without cheating. However, I can't, not because I don't have the skills, but I don't have the time. I have a full time job, a wife, 2 daughters, am trying to start a small nonprofit on the side, as well as also trying to launch a new website. ... I generally play this game late at night after my wife and kids have gone to bed and, even if I use a few 'cheats' it's extremely time consuming. My point is that what I do with the game, or how *I* enjoy it is entirely up to me. ... As it is, my wife often gets very irritated with me because I spend so many hours playing this game. I can't imagine how she'd react if I didn't JAPE up a few attributes and so on. Besides, I mostly enjoy simply watching how the characters and NPCs react to one another and different situations. When you've cleared so many sectors of enemy mercs, it starts to get boring without the witty banter.

To each his own, Rev1 Smile

As a matter of fact, we both share the same situation - wife, kids, playing it when everybody is asleep. I don't have any nonprofit on the side but I do have a full-time job at a high-security facility.

If you want to play it 'modified' - fine by me. No qualms about that. The only thing I was really upset is the fact that nobody here seems to appreciate a 'no-cheating' way of playing the game. People think that I'm just a braggart with so much time on hand. Well, I'm neither both. But when it comes to people who glorify finishing the game while cheating, and other people like and praise it, then that really pisses me off

Anyway, let's just keep on enjoying the game :nerd:
