Ahoy all,

Here's my pitch for a JA2 variant that could go far. I hope some of you are familiar with Battle Royal, an immensely popular Japanese novel and movie. The basic idea is that every year a class of high school students are snatched by the government, taken to an island, armed randomly, and forced to kill each other until there is only one survivor.

The actions revolves around not just the combat, but figuring out who could be trusted, who was actively trying to kill people, and whether there was an alternative way off the island. I can't do the story justice here, and heartily recommend the novel (I haven't seen the movie yet).

I believe that the JA2 framework, with it's wonderful character creation system (I do however prefer the simpler Fallout style) and good handling of passing time (Battle Royale generally involves a lot of hiding and sneaking). Although it seems a bit on the weak side, the personality handling in JA2 could be refined to allow for reactions between players when they first encounter each other, taking into account their mental state, wounds, etc.

The key component, however, would be that each time you played several factors would be randomized. In a perfect world the map, the order the students are released into the game, and the weapons they are armed with would be randomized between games. Chosing certain perks or abilities could allow special equipment (a character with "Gang member" might have a hidden weapon, for instance. The book is choc full of this type of thing. One character even had a detonator he had "inherited").

I'm not sure how well things like backstabs between members of a group could be handled. The whole purpose of the game would be to either kill everyone else, or team up to escape the island. often, the teams would break down as one or the other betrayed the group and usually most or all of them would end up dead.

So their it is. The idea has a lot of possibilities, and I think the JA2 is the best framework for it. Anyone interested?

The author is Koushun Takami. He has since died, unfortunately. There are a bunch of sequels, anime, and they are working on the second movies right now, I heard. I've only read the "original" novel.

Great idea, Elohssa!
I've recently seen the movie, but haven't read the novel. I think that with some source editing, it'd work great - have aim accessable only after you've done your extended character creation, and be told in the Mercs' profiles who are your friends/foes in your class, etc.
How well it works would depend on how much source editing is done, though.
