This topic is dedicated to those with artistic inclinations:they can make propositions for the "desktop.pcx" image, without the limitations that come from conversion to .sti or working with a certain type of tool.

The image doesn't have to be in .pcx format,or the dimension from the game.
If you post images here please have mercy on our time and the site, and make them small enough.
Or send them to the mail in my profile(could post a panorama of the images I received and their authors)

Suggestion:this could be an image for a moment of reflection, away from the noises and the battles from the maps.
Could be a personification of the "Renegade Republic", an iconic image.
You can also have other ideas or make other types of images.
Just stay away from award-winning photos and copywrited material, please.
Winner gets his image in game.
Popular vote decides the winner, only motivated votes count.

Alternative downloads, with multiple images for everyone to choose his favorite are also possible.

Azazel, Can you be more specific on which screen image you want? I don't know what you mean by desktop image. Do you mean the loadscreen? Or another in game image.

People might be bored of this image,it's just a white page with some black fog effect added, and the inscription.
A relatively unimportant aspect of the game, but replacing it would certainly add more identity to RR,if it is possible.
The original image is 506/428, resolution 480.

lol borout

in fact we could also add our faces to the credits screen as the original devs did

but on the other hand, who would want to see that?

@ Scorpion

The pics I submitted above. Was that kind of what your thinking about? Or something more along the lines of a non-real image. Or something totally different like a sunset type of pic.

don't know what az is looking for in terms of themes. Military ones as your sniper sure make sense. On the other hand, the desktop screen can also be "a moment of reflexion, away from the noises and chaos of the battle"
But feel free to contribute other stuff... it is an open contest, plus, as pointed out in the very first posting, there can be alternative themes made available fro download

Relax,it's not a Nails style "suck my exhaust" addressed to you, I really like your style.
And it could be a desktop.pcx image or proposition.
But you see,I could bet 99% of the players don't know how the view of a rifle barrel looks, when you clean it.
And their first reaction would be "what... is this crap?"
EDIT:Vicky was quicker.Message was a reply to Marlboro Man's post.

@scorpion
Current propositions, with images presented here, should be in your mailbox.
@Marlboro Man,Vicky&boyfriend If interested in testing them ingame, drop me a line(can't attach anything through the forum service)

If you try to make your chosen image(s) work ingame yourself:
1)dimension is 506/428 pixels.
The image editing program you use must be able to save in .pcx format.
2)It must be converted to 256 colours!(or it won't be displayed)
High resolution images seem to suffer most during this conversion to 256 colours, so...I'd recommand keeping it simple if you want extremely high quality.
Marlboro Man's "sitting sniper" still looks fine after conversion, though.
3)use a little frame, if you try to make the image look like the liquid chrystals display of a laptop. My image editor has this option as "frame-button 3D-single bevel"
4)place the new "Desktop.pcx" image in ja2/data/laptop to make the game display it(or create a new folder, rename it to "laptop" and, after placing your creation in it, place it in the "data" folder if you have a virgin JA2 instal)
Was that clear enough?

I resized them to 506*428 and reduced the colors to 256.

Edit: I was going to test these in game to see which one looked best, but my JA2 that I use for testing purposes went belly up for some reason. I need to reinstall it, and then I will test these images.

Guess you can count these as alternatives too.
The images come from Miro's personal gallery from xrmb2.net; parts of them were cropped and adapted to fit the Desktop.pcx image.
No copyright noticed.

Although I will gladly work any image submitted here and send it to the one that makes the proposition, please understand my reluctance to throw in images with a content that is specific to a certain army or era.(uniforms, weaponry, etc)

EDIT: the correct objection below was noted.
Just didn't want those crappy commercials from "imageshack" anywhere near those images.

hi,

if that still matters, however, AZAZEL, it's true, there is no copyright, these images are free.

what about that image i'm using for my own desktop?
http://xrmb2.net/img/977775.jpg

anyway, i'd vote for http://img346.imageshack.us/my.php?image=chinook1jg4.png because my opinion is, that this one fits best.

No, I wouldn't; although I think that other warm-toned image I sent you, with soldier silhouettes dissappearing in in a stormy sunset would do.
Would you care to explain what you plan to do?
See, eliminating the "operating system" on the desktop image of a mod is one thing, but changing that image or adding names and/or faces of simple epigones to the credits is another.

you mean you wouldn't change the credits screen at all? (i mean the graphic. names will be added, but the 1.13 and sir-tec developers will still be listed)

you'll be listed in the expanded credits as well. if you still wish not to be mentioned in the credits you need to tell me again Wink

oh yes, the one image we're currently using as the options background screen?
it would be very suitable for credits, that's true...
