I have installed all of the patches, but the game freezes during the enemy's 4th or 5th turn regardless during the battle at An Loc base. Any pointers/suggestions to get around this?

I never had any problems at An Loc. Are you getting an actual lockup or the endless stopwatch? If it's the stopwatch try pressing alt+enter to force the enemy to complete their turn.
There were some issues with the VC shotgun but they shouldn't using those by An Loc. If you can narrow it down to one specific soldier use the map editor to delete and replace him.
