Apart from what you said about camera angles I agree. Unless I misunderstood you it seems you are not in favor of a locking camera angle. I have no problem with the camera being able to move but I think if it's default (or at least a default setting) isn't fixed 'isometric' it will be another game that annoys me because I have to chase the camera all over the place. This completely blows game immersion for me and is the single most annoying thing about 3d games.

I think there is nothing wrong with 2d but would readily welcome 3d if it didn't result in any sacrifices, ease of interface included. 3d games where you have to chase the camera around are nothing more than cosmic debris to me.

Locking the camera angle is really simple to program. Depending on how camera movement is programmed, it is possible for the player to 'lock' the camera in place if he wants to. Though this may cause characters to disappear behind buildings.

I agree that 3D should not result in sacrifices, but from my experience I think it will actually leave more room for developers to add features. Besides, it gives better eye candy (which I personally couldn't care less about, but apparently many people do).

Jagged Alliance 2 is a great game, my favorite of all times. Ive played it a lot, even though probably not as much as many people here.

But I cant play it forever, I want new games. And by that I mean NEW games, not JA2 redone in 3D (or better-looking 2D). Turn-based tactical combat is fun, and it is a fine art being polished for decades now, JA2 probably being the pinnacle of it. But is not perfect, and it is not the only valid way of recreating tactical combat in a computer game.

Saying that JA2 is perfect, that turn-based is perfect, and becouse of that nothing new, nothing different as the right to be created, is like saying that Rafael was the greatet painter of all times, so the human race should have just stopped painting after he died and we should spend the rest of the eternity staring at his same paintings.

Some people actually think that way, about art, video-games, music, almost everything. And in spite of then, people keep painting new pictures, making new music, new games, etc. And so new great stuff (and even turn based combat was something new on its days) can still be invented.

My advice for the fanatics is this: let go. JA2 is great, but is already done. Now how about we let developers try something different? If all you want is that every new tactical game is just like JA2, then you dont need new games, just keep playing JA2 till the end of times.

That said, I have to confess I havent tried E5 mysels yet, but from all I heard, I seens really interesting. Now Im playing a modern X-COM clone called "UFO: Afterlight". Its not perfect, but its good enough to have changed my mind about RTwP. It just works really well, it does not requires any reflexes, it auto-pauses in any relevant event (almost every 5 seconds, actually), it is really strategic and fun to play, and combat has a more realist flow that turn-based cant achieve. It is not as deep and varied as JA2 combat, but the original JA also wanst, turn based came a long way to become that good.

So yeah, now Im optimistic about the future of RTwP tactical combat now and thats why I want to try E5 and its sequel. Im not expecting it to be has good has JA2 was, but I know it is probably good, and it will be a different experience. And maybe, in a not so far future, some talented developers might you a similar system to make a tactical game even better than JA2. Anyway, it will never going to happen if all the game developers are allowed to do is try to recreate JA2.

Wow, maybe you should stop watching Fox News so much...

WHATS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN!

For your information I do not watch TV, and yes English is what you have to learn to compete in this world, it is international and you being from the states disgust me with your anti-English attitude. On the other hand, are you an illegal that is fighting against this country and taking Americans jobs to boot?

You want a slim fest will that is up to you.

First of all, my english is better than yours and it isn't even my native language. I am not a US citizen, that's true. I did not take someone's job, because the position was created for me that would otherwise not have been created at all.

PS. Don't feel so high and mighty about being American and speaking English. It is not your language, you don't even *have* an official language. You also didn't put it on the map, the British did that centuries ago.

Just a reminder to all....it doesn't matter what country, language, religion, type of government you are/prefer....we all members here cause of one common bond...our love of JA. Differing on what/how JA3 should made is one thing, but arguing about the all that other crap is useless IMO.

i got E5, and i can say the following:

* The crappy/hilarious voice acting (i mean, the irish woman sounds like an east european guy. No offence!)
* Occasional crashes
* The repetitive maps, ( if battles start in a certain place on the strategic map, i get the same tactical map as the last time. More battle maps!)
* Outdated graphics ( i mean, im not a graphics geek. I love JA and JA2, even though its way outdated. But it seems hastily assembled.

That was the bad parts of the game:

And now the good ones:

* Massive selection of guns Very Happy
* Interesting meld of RT and (Turn-based) combat, im writing turnbased in () cause i mean using pause and planning your attack and movement, is a turn.
* Freedom of choice, working of any side. Either for the good, the bad or the ugly >Smile

Anyways, could recommend Cops 2170: The Power of Law. Although it got a few glitches. Both E5 and Cops 2170 can be bought at strategyfirst. Just got my summer money from my work, so im testing out these, and downloaded the JA2 gold from em.. Just to keep the withdrawals at bay, until Fallout 3 comes out and hopefully JA3 Very Happy

The problem of the future of JA is that a majority of custumers (players) don't want 2D in games. A new games have to be nice and in 3D now!
I like 3D games like Oblivion, Kotor1... But 2D graphism are better in some sort of game like JA.
The industry of game more interest to build 3D engine cause it's the new spring for making money. Cause, Now a lots of games are on PSX or XboxX and PC at soame time etc... And it's means games no longer be making like JA was making, i think.

I wouldn't mind if the next JA game would look something Company of Heroes. Not the gameplay of course, but he look/engine.

E5 Rocks! As for E5 graphics, the models are extremely hi res and spot on. The weapon detail is amazing. Add a lazer sight to your rifle and there it is, even the red beam shows up and flashes around. The terrain graphics suck, square slopes. Superb weapon calculations and physics, big weapons take longer to aim, and that is factored into the initiative.

I'm not really sure why one would need to walk in a stealthy stance in turn based Jazz. Running gets you further. Its not like in realtime where somebody can shoot you on the run exposed. Because in realtime stealth actually does something when you move. every milisecond counts and pistols shoot sooner than rifles in close quarters.

Dont get me wrong I will probably get Jazz if they take off the angle and camera scroll restrictions, Im sure they will. Turn based is fun too, its just not realistic in the real world sense.

And POV ray the damn maps. Hey mist Land.... add some shadows to the terrain!

Will this developer/publisher support the game and listen to the fans? I have my doubts. Sounds like some sort of gem in the rough (not a diamond, but something still worthwhile), but looks like it will only be worth paying serious attention to if the developer fixes a lot of the issues before release and some decent patches come out.

3d sucks. If you want 3d fun go paintballing with your friends. Isometric is the only decent view for games imho. It's the view of the chess board from one corner (and suits the whole turn based thing where appropriate). It's the view you remember long ago of your toy soldiers in the sandpit. All the best games with the best re-play value are/were isometric. The only 3d type games I ever liked were the tomb raider series with much emphasis on the complex levels, acrobatics and puzzle solving; combat in rt fps 3d environment was more of an irritating side issue; once you'd done a level once you knew where the enemies were. Myth was alright I guess but a bit too creepy for my liking. I want to see the power of modern computing and graphics being used for some really stunning detailed and huge complex Isometric games... there said my bit. Feel much better now. *)

Gukk! Isometric with rotatable N-E-S-W views and a decent zoom in/out is as 3d as I want to go. Real 3d games give me gyp with dumb counter intuitive camera angles and crappy up close graphics when you bump into stuff; plus they tend to concentrate on the fact that it is 3d rather than the gameplay-replayability etc. They also require a lot more real dexterity. The beauty of JA2 and it's kind is that people of varying physical abilities can still play regardless... it's an equal opps format. The playstation generation would do well to remember some of us are gnarly old crokks with slower reactions in real time!

The advantage of 3D (I think) is that you can calculate LOS/LOF and such things much better and more realistic then in an isometric setting.. As long as the camera controls are good 3D will always be the way to go.

What's with all the fanboyism I see in this thread? People act like it's a horrible disgusting game because it's not Jagged Alliance 2. Brigade E5 is a great game that stands on its own. Its RPG elements are weak, but the combat system is very well fleshed-out and I feel the real time with pause makes for an excellent game. Guess what, not every game ever made is an isometric turn-based game, does that mean every one of them was bad? Welcome to the new age. Why make the game 2-D with a static camera when it can be 3-D and allow you to look from any angle? You can't see the game as sucking because it's not jagged alliance. The sequel will have much better RPG and mercenary elements. I'm glad they focused on what actually mattered for the first game, the gameplay. They nailed the combat and spent the most time on that, and now they have time to polish it a little and add in the interaction and strategic options it's lacking.

E5 rule and the sentence by afp is right, if you love JA2 you can't love E5...the combat at least.
My suggestion is try it on custom difficulty mode with all the easy things on, find out how the game mechanics works (missions, game level change, money, store, factions, mercs(and joinable npcs), travel...survival and combat first of all), then start again at your desired difficulty level, be on the role of your char as it's yourself on the field and if something dumb happens remember this: it's a 6 out of 10 game with the best blend of turn and real time combat out there.

7.62 is even better despite the russian language.

And don't play without Immortal Badass!

It's a shame that Apeiron talks frequently only to russian speaking people and the english version takes ages to come out.

I just finished tonight the english translation for 7.62. Some of the quest are still machine translated (about 20%) and the english UI is only for 1280x1024 or above - too lazy to make it for 800x600, and maybe useless. But overall looks good and you can understand the quests.
