When you blow a SAM site, Deidranna's forces cannot recapture it, the area covered by the destroyed SAM site becomes safe for Skyrider to travel, but in the other hand you cannot train militia at the SAM site sector anymore.

Enemies can recapture broken SAM sites. SAM sites are repaired as soon as the Queen's army retakes them. If you blow the computer, then get out without taking over the SAM site, the SAM site will be broken for a while until reinforcements arrive to repair the site. (About for a day or 2).

SAM sites are either controlled by the queen or you. There is no broken or not.

He is wrong. You can't destroy them, you can only control them. As soon as the queen's troops take over a site the airspace becomes hostile.

I don't think this has changed with revisions but maybe it has.

You can disable sam sites even in JA 1.12 (didn't try in 1.13). Try blowing up the computers at SAM sites and retreating. It will stay broken until reinforcements arrive to fix it.

The same thing happens if you just leave.

No, I mean blow up the computers without killing all the enemies, and then retreat from the battle, while you are the attacking side. The Queen still controls the site, but the sky is yours for a while. Pointless, yeah, but kinda interesting.

You have to hold those sites and I have seen some of the worst fighting in the game taking them and keeping them. I saw some gray elites rip apart some green militia. It was depressing but we held in the end. The worst I think is the one west of San Mona though and it drives me nuts that you can't tranfer militia from Cambria to the site just south of the city. I have found Sam sites to be the toughest military sites in the game.

Though the other night Buns and my IMP covered in camo went in at night and attacked and wiped out the garrison of the Sam site on the western coast. Still wounded both mercs but in the end they were all dead.

Gear suggestions for a conventional assault:

Long rifles to take out the enemy from outside the fence.

Wirecutter...I don't think I need to explain that one.

Explosives are useful against walled builtings

Shotguns are great for when you in close.

Gas masks...the sam site by cambria will deploy tear gas in defense of the control room.

Night assult

camo

night vision goggles

knives

good burst fire weapons

Even if you don't take the site you can do some damage and come in with a full crew the next day. I did that once when I sent in two mercs with night vision break lights and grenades. Did alot of damage but both got wounded so I pulled out. Next morning when we came back only found one soldier alive.

I had Buns go to the site East of Drassen with a long rifle and had her work her way around the place. She cut them down ruthlessly. Only got wounded because of the bastard on the roof.

I decided to try out some of the tactics described above.

The first experiment was to attack the Drassen SAM site. Red cut a hole in the east side of the fence, then planted a bomb outside the wall. After detonating the bomb, he immediately got inside and planted a second bomb by the computers. He ran out and the bomb was detonated. The computers were destroyed and the airspace turned green. The team retreated, thus "losing" the battle but the airspace is still green, several days after.

The second experiment was on the Grumm/Chitzena SAM site. Sidney sniped the entire garrison and the battle was won. The computers were destroyed (using handgrenades) and the team left the site. As soon as enemy reinforcements arrived, the airspace turned red.

The third experiment was on Cambria SAM site. I had Trevor aiming mortar fire on the south wall of the main building from the south edge of the map. One grenade to blow the fence and the outer wall. A second grenade to blow the inner wall. The third and the fourth grenade into the computer room (the mortar can actually shoot almost straight angels). I checked the strategic map and the airspace was green. The team left the site, "losing" the battle. The airspace is still green.

Conclusions:
*Taking a SAM site turns the airspace green until the enemy retakes the sector. (duh!)
*Destroying the computers and taking the sector (as in experiment two described above) will turn the airspace green until the enemy retakes the sector.
*Destroying the computers and NOT taking the sector (as in experiment one and three described above)will turn the airspace green for at least five days, perhaps more.

The fourth experiment will be to attack the Meduna SAM site. I will take the sector and plant a bomb with a remote detonator in the computer room. Then I will have a merc waiting int he sector with the remote trigger. As soon as the enemy retakes the sector, thus turning the airspace red again, I will detonate the bomb. Expected result:
*The airspace will turn green for at least five more days.

I will also carefully observe if the airspace turns red again after more than five days around the sectors where the enemy has control over a broken SAM computer.

You have to destroy the computer with the green light...
Then the area stays safe even after the enemy retakes it.
I've been told that elite enemy troops can fix it.

Never tried it out. Don't always carry explosions with me.
