In a multitude of JA2 games, I've only ever happened across Madlab once, and I didn't bother with 'enlisting' the robot, since by that stage I had a bunch of high-level and well-equipped mercs on the payroll. Now, I'm stumbled across him for the second time in my JA2 'career' (in a v1.13.1147 campaign, no less), and for gits and shiggles I figured I'd take Robbie out for a spin. Thing is, I'm having some trouble deciding on the best armament. I've got an MG3 that looks promising, but I'm wondering if the tread-head might be better-served as a mobile mortar-mount; has anyone tried this, and if so, how'd it work out? Uh Oh

Similarly, has anyone ever used it as a remote-platform for, oh, RPG-16 rockets (or maybe an M202 FLASH unit in the DBB mod), and if so, with what results? Uh Oh

As always, all I can do is give info for the JA2 vanilla version, but it should help... I think...

"When the scientist asks you for a gun to mount on the Robot, you should choose wisely,
because the gun you choose will be forever attached to the Robot. So you can't change it
anymore!
If you want him to be in the front line in close quarters situations, that means you need
to give it a weapon with low action points and large ammo capacity (no need for long
ranges). Thus far I find the M16A2/C7 (with rod and spring) to be one of the better
choices for the Robot. The G11 also fits these criteria as many others.
But giving him a low end weapon may limit him a little bit. So you can also think "I should
give him the most powerful weapon I currently have right now 'cause once it's attached to
the robot's body, it'll be the only weapon the robot'll ever use." So, once again, choose
wisely. Also, it seems you can't give modified guns to the Robot (either permanent or
temporary). When you try giving one to him, all the attached stuff to the gun, end in a pile
on the floor (not certain about this).

BEWARE! If you give him the Rocket Rifle as the weapon make sure the gun is "clean
of fingerprints", because if it has been already used by someone, you'll not be able to use
it and therefore useless to the Robot (get the "Invalid fingerprint ID" message).
If you want to do that, get the Rocket Rifle fixed by the electronics guy first and then
give it to MadLab, and the Robot will be able to fire it. Trust me, I've done it!"

Also, you could modify the stats of the robot with proedit. You can make a real mean T-800 from that junk Very Happy

Btw.: When fooling around with proedit, I saw that the robot mercenarys evolution is not 'none' but 'normal'. It doesn't get better because it has 5 wisdom (dumber then Bubba Very Happy). I think if you give it much more wisdom (40+) it would learn too...

I usually give an LMG to the robot. Since it lacks good aiming, the only way for it to deal lots of damage is burst fire.

I usually give the Shrike to the robot, but if I'm limited at the time I get to madlab, I usually go for a similar LMG. I always try to get the least amount of APs required.

Has anyone ever tried to put an after-market SCAR on the madlab bot?

The robot can't learn no matter what his wis is because the source code specifically states that the robot can't learn.

While skimming through the source code, I also noticed that the Robot's marksmanship and interrupt ability is affected by the controller's marksmanship and level, while the controller takes a penalty to his interrupt ability because he's distracted while controlling the robot. I usually give the controller headset to Hitman when I use the robot because he's a cheap guy with high lvl and marksmanship.

Well that's some good info. I usually gave control of the robot to one one of my crappy mercs. But this does seem logical. Nice catch there in the code. Smile

Interesting. Perhaps we need a new trait, "FPS Gamer".

I usually give the robot to Gumpy, 'cause he's a sci-fi geek and I figured he'd like that. I should stop that, huh?

I saw in the code where the robot gets to use its own marksmenship OR the one of the controller whichever is higher.

if ( AM_A_ROBOT( pSoldier ) ) {
SOLDIERTYPE * pSoldier2 = GetRobotController( pSoldier );
if ( pSoldier2 ) {
  iMarksmanship = __max( iMarksmanship, EffectiveMarksmanship( pSoldier2 ) );
}

One question: Is it a robot or a remotely piloted vehicle? Does it have its own AI or is it just controlled by a human?

The controller headset doesn't really look like it could be used to control all of the robot's actions, especially not while in the middle of a firefight. It has a microphone, headphone and a small display. My best guess is that the robot indeed is a robot, it has its own AI and can fight by itself, but general commands, like 'guard', 'engage at will' and 'ceace fire' are given by the controller, much like squad leaders command their squad members.

Back on topic: For now I've found that the MG36 with its integral reflex scope is the most suitable weapon for the robot (I'm playing the 1.13 mod)

IIRC, all attachments are removed from the rifle when building the robot, including sniper scopes... so you'd have a robot with a high-power, medium-range rifle that can fire only once a turn and needs to be reloaded very often. Not exactly useful.

I don't usually bother with the robot as it often gets trashed and more time is spent fixing it than it's in combat.

However, on the occasions that I do take it, I arm it with an M-14 as I like the sound it makes when it burst fires plus its a good rifle that hits hard and has good range.

Actually, if you give the robot a weapon that comes with a default attachment (e.g. sniper rifles that come with sniper scopes) it will appear in the attachment slot when the robot is wielding it even if it wasn't attached when you gave it to Dr. Kairns.

Furthermore, the robot will take advantage of the scope's vision bonus - and what's best - with 360-degree coverage! This makes the robot useful, not as a fighter, but as a spotter since it will always see the enemy first
