The ingame description says its a "PolyCore" slug that "tears through body armor as though it were tissue paper", but the ammo type is defined as "normal" in the editor. Is that correct? If the PloyCore slug is indeed armor piercing, shouldn't it be defined as such?

Yet another instance of the description not matching up with the game mechanics. The best armor piercing shotgun ammo is probably CAWS (which counts as XAP ammo), seconded by Flechette.

That I know. Its this "PolyCore" thing I want to find out about. Is it armor piercing or just "normal"? Why would the description say its AP and the game has it as "normal"? Who screwed up?

Flechettes... interesting. Tell me the ways of this FLE-CHET.

in the premod JA2 shotguns just aren't worth until you are really damn close.

I looked and 12g. Flechettes really are AP. They aren't as good as norral AP which mostly uses 0.75 armor multiplier but are close with 0.80 armor mutiplier. They do the same damage as normal rounds.

You can buy flechette ammo from BR's. It's basically an armor piercing buckshot. However, it does not have the 5 tile range bonus that slugs do. Use flechette ammo in a USAS-12 or a Jackhammer on full-auto, and you can do some damage in CQB.

Flechette has a 2 tile bonus over buckshot which is 3 less than the 5 bonus that slugs get.

Slugs are treated like ordinary ball ammo, hence the "normal" attribute". Like ball ammo, they have light armor piercing properties. The description kinda blows it out of proportion though. I'd rewrite it to say "A single poly-core slug that has a better chance of penetrating body armor than buckshot".

Shotguns have their place. Early on in the game they are useful for flushing out the redshirts, and they have a bit of a renaissance later on if you get the flechette ammo and are at close range (especially if you go full auto with the USAS). One per daytime assault squad is handy, but if you do night ops than forget it.
