Hi ,

Complete newbie here but have finally got JA 2+ JA2 UB working sweet on vista thus far so Im very happy now!

Im sure as many of you can imagine there is much I have to learn Smile Im curious as to how I know if my npcs are tired? Also how do I rest in a zone? Is it possible when enemys are about but havent seen you yet? Is it possible to rest outside a zone? Wheres the best place to rest?

Also on the original JA 2 well I have only just started playing, Im right at the beggining and Im wandering how I can buy more ammo for my mercs prior to a mission. (Theres a web site that sells flowers, whats all that about? Dont want spoilers if poss though Smile )

Mercs seem quite costly and you only get them for a couple of weeks , is it possible to keep them and get their skills higher? (Is it easy enough to get the money back later)

In regards to the UI, when Im moving my mercs , footprints show and they are all differant colours , red , orange, yellow, grey .........what do each of the colours mean and what are their uses?

Regarding stealth , I have yet to succesfully sneak up on someone, it seems a hard thing to do.

Finally I have done some reading here and other places and this query is regarding stats, for my leader merc I leave leadership at 45 and put explosives and mechanical down to zero. The next values are to the best of my memmory but approximately I set agility to say 80/85 , dexterity 5 over default , wisom 80 or 85, marksmanship 80 or 85, medical 35 to 45,strentgh I put slightly higher than default or just leave as is. Ow yeah as for health for my main merc think it is only 60 but I want him to be a damage dealer not a tank but comments welcome

I cant quite remember the exact details but what do you folks think about my character build considering I want my main merc to have lots of AP and be a great damage dealer with guns? Also apart from throwing grenades I dont see the use in strength unless doing melee combat ? Is this correct? Whats strength good for, should I be putting this higher?

All the above are just lots of small querys but I think knowing these things in the context of how I want my character to fit its role would be awesome.

ty

added: heres my planned team composition, comments welcomed.........a damage dealer(My main merc) , a tank(Unsure of what stats most help a tank regarding damage absorbsion - is high HP the mian thing?), a healer(medical and dexterity are these the mains for a medic?)) <-------so just 3 mercs total to start out with

added: When starting a new game I decided to choose experianced, I am not experianced so maybe you all think its a bad idea? However at the same time I dont want to go through the game on novice and finish it in no time.

Your mercs have 3 bars, the red is health, the blue is energy, and the green is morale. When your mercs are rested, the blue bar is at maximum. As you travel across sectors or perform actions such as repairing, doctoring, or training, the blue bar starts to drop. When it gets too low, your mercs will not perform well in combat. In battle, you will start with lower AP's and your mercs are most likely to run out of breath while running. To replenish this, on the strategic screen, there is a column next to your merc's name, when you click it, a bed icon shows up. Your merc is sleeping; let time pass and his blue bar will return to the maximum. Before you assault enemy sectors, it is generally best to force all your mercs to bed, then attack after everyone has full energy.

After you take the Drassen airport, a website becomes available. You can buy weapons, ammo, and equipment there. It will be delivered to the airport in a crate. Be careful, the guy who manages shipping is a real jerk and may steal your items. Bribe him to stop that. Or, just put a bullet in him, but the guy who replaces him is worse.... Your other option is to go to San Mona, you'll find an arms dealer there, if you know where to look. This guy also buys your excess weapons and ammo.

Yup....hang on to your mercs. They will improve with time, but their pay will go up as well. Most towns have a mine. When you free the mine sector, talk to the head miner, and you will start to get money every day from your mines. Use this money to extend the merc contracts. For the most part, you cannot beat the game without a good team of mercs! Hire guys from AIM, MERC, and locals. See which ones you like, fire the ones you don't. Some mercs work well together (Raven and Raider for example), some hate each other (Lynx and Buzz, for example).

In regards to the UI, when Im moving my mercs , footprints show and they are all differant colours , red , orange, yellow, grey .........what do each of the colours mean and what are their uses?

The colors allow you to plot out how many AP's movement will cost. Grey means that your merc does not have enough APs to travel the full distance you plotted. Yellow means you can move there with AP's to spare, while red (IIRC) shows you can move there, but not enough APs to fire your primary weapon. Don't forget your mercs can run in combat!!! Press the 'r' button to run. You will move more spaces while running, but it is easier for enemies to interrupt your actions and get shots while you are moving. Use whatever movement style (prone, crouch, walk, run) is appropriate for the tactical situation. For example, it is best to crouch and move slowly around a building corner, but it is best to run in open areas to get to cover quickly.

Regarding stealth , I have yet to succesfully sneak up on someone, it seems a hard thing to do.

Stealth is difficult to learn at first. Select your merc, press the 'z' key. They name will highlight yellow at the bottom of the screen. This is 'stealth' mode. Stealth is best accomplished at night. Moving in stealth costs more APs than normal movement, so don't use stealth if the enemy has seen you and is shooting at you (turn off stealth mode if you had it on). At night, use stealth to sneak up on enemies when their backs are turned. If you have NVG's, use them, you can see the enemy a bit sooner than they can see you. When you are close, shoot them with a silenced weapon, or use throwing knives, or punch/stab them. If you shoot with a regular gun, everyone else will hear you, and stealth after that is basically pointless.

Also apart from throwing grenades I dont see the use in strength unless doing melee combat ? Is this correct? Whats strength good for, should I be putting this higher?

If you want a pure gun merc...first make sure they get the 'auto weapons' trait!
Leadership helps with training miltia, teaching other mercs, and talking to some NPC's you'll find in the game world. Leadership isn't terribly important if you have someone else on your team who has a high leadership. A medium starting leadership (20 to 30) is usually more than enough.

Drop mechanical and explosives to 0 for starts. Mechanical is for repairing stuff and picking locks. Explosives are for setting and disarming bombs (have nothing to do with grenades). Other mercs can handle that just fine. Drop medical to 35 at creation. This will allow you to apply first aid (bandages) in combat to stop yourself and other mercs from bleeding. Out of combat (on the strategic screen), you can use a med kit to heal wounded mercs.

For a good solid 'gun' IMP, you need high strength, agility, health, and dexterity. Strength is important for hand to hand combat, but more importantly, how much your merc can carry. Low strength mercs can't carry lots of guns, armor, and ammo from sector to sector, and they will lose energy quickly if overloaded. Overloaded mercs in combat start with lower AP's as well. How many AP's you get in combat is dependent on a combination of agility, dexterity (and maybe one other stat). Agility is important for stealth, shooting, moving, and more. Dexterity is useful as well, it also helps you throw things, like knives and grenades more accurately. Health is critical. High health = more damage before you die. Lastly, wisdom is also important, high wisdom means you learn skills quicker, so your mercs will improve faster.

Hope this helps, and welcome to JA2!

Yeah it is, really deals with alot of stuff that is going to be crucial for a newbie getting the most out of the game. (I am getting more out the game now because initially I was not specialising my members and missing out some crucial stats, really starting to appreciate the game now)

Make sure you pay JAG a visit too. Over the years people have posted a lot of usefull tips, tactics and usefull information.

Seeing you're just starting out you might find usefull the following sections:

JA2/Q&A/HOW-TO...
http://jagalaxy.com/phpfaq/index.php?action=show&cat=34

JA2/Q&A/WHERE IS...
http://jagalaxy.com/phpfaq/index.php?action=show&cat=35

There are a lot of other goodies posted there, but that should get you started. We're rebuilding the Sectors info atm, but almost half of the city sectors are online already, so thats another stop.
And of course, if writting is your game and wish to send your own tip/tactic, feel free to use our online form and do so.

Will definatly check those out as well, cheers!

edit: Will make make this last comment on this thread Smile, I ended up taking the mine at drassen and I get x amount of cash per day, I also spent much time messing arount with the doctor patiant system on the map sceen so I figured how to fully heal up my mercs. Heres the thing I also finally worked out how do order weapons and first aid kits etc and they ended up at drassen airport where as mentioned in the thread the guy says if stuff goes missing dont blame him lol.(was considering shooting the theif as Im sure was suggested here but Im curious if that effects anything in game in a bad way i.e missing certain content?) Anyway After clearing out drassen well I wasnt quite sure what to do and I ended up dismissing a badly wounded merc as I didnt have a first aid kit and time was off the essance, after this and trying getting to know the inns and outs of a newly discovered site: MErc, I hired 2 mercs and had 3 mercs in my team, next the queen sends out a big army or something to my sector so I got owned before I could link the 2 sets of mercs up, the thing is Im thinking of starting again as now I know I cant waste time, its just the way its worked I think for me to continue I would lose my main merc and I think it will hurt me later when Im most likely expected to have a high level merc.........liking the game the more I play it though , some of the battles seem quite memorable. (I think Im taking a bit to much damage though so Im away for cig then I will bash through the guides in this thread)
