Last release date I heard was Q4 2007, but that looks doubtful now.

The Fall - Last days of Gaia

I forgot about this, it used to be a "never released" game. In the meantime the German version is out and someone created an English mod which seems to be quite playable.

Fallout 3 is also in development, but the release date is set to Q4 2008 which ussually means Q3 2017...

Fallout 3 is not a squad based game. Worse yet Bethesda has decided to go with FPP/RT. So I expect this game to be more FPS than anything else.

Indeed, Interplay went bankrupt and they changed the developer. Still, you can change the current character, pause the game, queue orders etc, I think its more SPM (smart pause mode) than FPS...hard to define untill we see, anyway.

Not really, it's more FPS with altered bullet time than SPM. You're only controlling one character and you're not really queuing orders. If you have enough action points, you can enter VATS (pausing the game) and the camera focuses in on the enemy. You can then select a body part to aim for. Then you exit VATS and it goes back to real-time and to the viewpoint you were using (1st person or over-the-shoulder 3rd person). When your action points regenerate, you can enter VATS again. But the game can be played fully real-time without using VATS at all, as a FPS or 3rd person action game.

The Fall - Last days of Gaia looks fantastic. It's like a 3D JA2/Fallout 2 hybrid. The environment looks quite menacing and the non-linear rpg element really enhances its appeal.

I think its a curse, all TBS like strategic games end up doubtfully, the companies went bankrupt, people leave or move to other companies, games are never release etc. It may be because of the small number of players of such games, even if the community is very solid - most of use use to play more or less similar games. Someone kiss the frog and break the spell, so the world will be filled with strategic games Smile

lol yeah after the 11 first patches and hotfixes maybe it turned out playable in the end ;-D

all i know is "the fall" as a symbolic example of bad quality development where the game is released and all kinds of patches and fixes are *required* to get it working in the first place...

did the re-release a version that included the first dozen patches? or does the fanmod you mention do the fixes?

I've watched the trailer of The Fall and looks like a mix of Fallout, Mad Max (the movie) and JA. And with hunting, crafting, trading. With drivable vehicles. Sounds too damn good to be true.

Characters do look & move like crash test dummies in retirement, but who cares. If this is not some "mission based" crap, they got my money. The scenery and idea compensate for the 3d models in my book.

The Fall was a hilarious trainwreck. 11 patches and one 'Reloaded' version later, and it's still crippled by its repuation.

The English version never saw the light of day, afaik.

The Fall has some great ideas in it, but as a whole the game is just not like Fallout when it came out. It just doesnt blow your brain out. It just tickles a bit for a while. I played with it for about a month.

Far better game than the usual blockbuster crap that hits the marked, but its not the game "WE" like:)

We are too spoiled for avarge good games. We play and love stuff like Fallout, JA, Baldurs Gate etc.

Games that look not so hot, but feel sweeet even after 10-15 years even when most Pc's have 8800's in them these games run just fine on a P100 comp.

If you have a little spare time try The Fall, otherwise, just let it be:)

ST Away Team, big disappointment. It was a badly done real time game, with little effort to make use of ST's technology properly. The main characters had custom suits which looked like nothing out of Star Trek, which kind of defeated using the licence. It's a pity, the environments and npc/enemies were beautifully done but the game was less interesting than watching paint dry.

Operation Darkness looked like it might be fun, a WWII turn-based game for xbox 360 with zombies, vampires and werewolves. Unfortunately the reviews all say it's terrible.

Ugh. It's got those Japanese anime-look character graphics in it. OK, it IS a Japanese game, but given it is set in a "historical" context couldn't they have left them out just for once?

Operation Darkness is worth a look. I made it all the way to mission 24, then read I made some mistakes that made it difficult to progress and have now restarted. The fact that I restarted rather than just quit says a lot.

Postives:
Destroy anything
character leving
skills and powers
Kitting Weapons
Salvage weapons including some unique ones
Great turn based strategy RPG
Magic, werewolves, and dragons mixed with nazis and tanks!
Doesn't feel like a JRPG, definetly has a more western feel to it! No cutsy creatures here!

Negative:
Some obscure game mechanics are not readily visible and will impact your enjoyment
The game can be initially very hard till you get a understanding of the feel for the game's play, then it can become pretty easy except for the last few missions.
Camera Control is wonky at times
Several missions start with you getting pounded from the outset
The later missions have the Nazi/blood clans getting bigger and bigger action bonuses so they can ofter act 2 or 3 times to your once, unless you find out the secrets to play mechanics to equlaize the play field
hidden characters and actions can impact your team. Its all to easy to lose or miss a few important squad mate withoutrealizing your doing it.
My biggest beif with the game? I can't save in misison! I have to restart a mission! that means listening to the entire briefing and all cut scenes without being able to really skip them! Ug.

The combination of not understanding the mechanics of the game and the lack of save game was driving me nuts..and almsot made me quit the game. Once I figured out the 'tricks' to the game mechanics the lack of saves wasn't much a problem...although I can see the last few missions will probably re-annoy me! I love easter eggs as much as the next guy, but this game really penalizes you if you don't exprement and get some of the undocumented rules to the game.

The second play through is almost easy now, when last time I was pulling my hair out on some of these misisons. The fact that there are so few part based strategy/RPGs makes this hard to pass up. I alsmost gave up despite my love of the genre, but once I understood the hidden rules, I'm enjoying the game immensly! As a fan of the genre I woudl rate it a 70%, some definet flaws but worth checking out. I strongly encourage expermenting when you play to find out the hidden rules, some of the online FAQs provide some assistance and are a good guide, but they still miss a critical peince of the required information in my mind. Specifically around encumberance and how it impacts play.

OK, not a bad touch for slow arses like me, even with a "penalty"...
Quote:
The best thing to do was use the VATS mode, which lets you pause the action and target individual parts of the enemies' bodies. You can do this only a limited number of times before you run out of power

Might be funny afterall...
Quote:
It's worth noting just how adult this game is; even the young boy repeated the "F" word without batting an eyelid. He called the enemies in question the "f***in' ants," something that we've not really ever heard said by a minor in a video game before.

Hell ya, it's funny! ROFL..
Quote:
We had three responses to choose from: "Bryan, I'm sorry, but your father is dead," "Your father's dead," or "Sorry kid. Your old man is ant food." We decided to switch from good cop to bad cop and go for the last option, which was met with a response of, "You're an a**hole."
