Interesting thread. Never tried UC. Played JA2 vanilla, and now, the 8000+ 'mod' for quite a while (3rd tour of duty now )
Please, could you shed some more light on the UC mod for me? Like: the country map, is it a long campaign, is it balanced, bugged, how about new items? Is it hard?
I'm not particularly interested to kill say, Deidranna or something. Did that 100 times. i like the 8000+ because it offers me thousands of enemy soldiers to kill, and it takes quite a while to clear all the 200+ occupied sectors. Redefined some of my priorities after that mod (no specialized mechanics, but a shooter/mech, no more specialized medics, but shooters/medics etc).
Thanks.
C.

C. UC is fairly tricky to start with (your mercs arrive in country with no weapons on them) but once you get going it gets easier. Especially on harder dificulty settings, I find the long game easier (More enemies with better guns = more high grade equipment being dropped, you just have to work a bit harder in the short term).
I dont think its bugged much/atall (I cant remember any). I'd say its fairly well balanced apart from the LMGs. They are very, very nasty in UC. The new items work well (along with rehashes of old ones - like refillable cammo kits and canteens).
The campagin can be quite long, espesially as if like me you try to secure every sector as best you can and wipe out the army as much as possible. Basically, there are more enemies in more sectors. And its an urban battle for the vast majority of the time so it tends to take longer to kill all the enemy soldiers too.

The 8000+ is not really a MOD, it's rather an edited saved game of JA2. It IS ja2 as we know it, but, all the land sectors are filled with max number of enemies, minimum 32 per sector, many more Elites among them than in normal JA2 expert game. About 7-8 per sector, sometimes more. Sometimes those 32 guys are putted in a sector already containing its own garrison of, say, 25 troops. So, than you are facing 58 bad guys. One wrong move, and they storm you. For me it is working great, since i play 90% night battles and use as many silenced weapons as i can. Makes you reconsider the tactics. See, you start in Omerta as usual, but have to carve through several 32-bad guys sectors to arrive to Drassen. Then, you need to carve your way through 6 sectors full of enemies to arrive to Cambria. The road from Cambria to S.Mona takes another 5 battles. In San Mona, you have 32 Deidranna guys+ all the Kingpin ones against you. And, from teh very beginning of teh game (already in Omerta!) Kingpin's killers are after you. So far, i killed 3 or 4, not sure. Olaf, Ray, and Olga i think.
Well, all in all. with a bit of planning, you end up with this:
They are many, but they are still dumb as a tree-stump

The 8000+ mod is very friendly, in a way that you can dedicate say, two of your save slots to it, and play the mod from those slots only. it does not modify any file in your JA2 folder. You can even save the game while playing the 8000 mod, stash the save in a safe place and continue playing your JA2 game as nothing happened. There are no new weapons, no new NPC's, nothing new. Just craploads of enemy targets. And lots, lots of guns, ammo and stuff.
Great anti-stress tool....except when you do some stupid move and all your team got shred to pieces.
Normally, it couldn't happen, but i play it with 1.12, so tons of lightsticks/stun renades/rifle grenades/mortar shells and all that jazz flying my way from the dark areas. Sometimes i wonder how i am only now discovering some interesting features of this game. After what? 6 years? Example: now my IMP gets out loaded for bear, and toting a dozen throwing knives. To have 10+ insta-kills with knives per battle is a reality. Makes me really chuckle whenever i throw a knife at that sonovabitch gray elite and got like 100 hp damage. oomph..dead elite Marvellous he he.

The 8000+ 'mod' was made by a guy named 'WeaponX' quite time ago.I lost my original 8000+ file.
All i have is a 8000+ save game with just Drassen liberated and on my way to Cambria, one or two sectors away from Drassen, with my IMP, Raven, Igor, Grunty and Malice in my squad. Sorry.
Some time ago i asked here if someone still had the original 8000+ save, but noone replied. If you can, start a search yourself too. Please, keep me informed if/when you find the 8000+ save. Tho, i have another 'mod' from Weaponx, named '8000+ even harder'. There you can't recruit the Rebels, and i heard also Bobby Ray's was gone. Not sure for the other features he edited there.
Good luck.
P.S. I still keep restarting my 8000+ mod (from Drassen on) since i can edit my IMO's stats easily to fit my (new) taste, and i have Igor and Raven in my squad anyway in all my games so its not a big deal.
Chazz.

renegade republic will be (at least) as buggy as 1.13 because rr bases on 1.13. But some of these bugs can be evaded by quick-saving before trying to enter a hostile sector.
i hope it will be entertaining nevertheless though.
