One of the things I find intersting about JA2 is the ability to move a bit from 'gamie' to 'real'. This is also one of the things that frustrates me.
Thanks to some advise here, I was finally able to get ProEdit to work so I can adjust a merc's strength a bit above its pathetic level. But the issue seems deeper to me. My intention is not to convert JA2 into a 'turkeyshoot', but to get it to resemble reality, as best I see it, a bit.
For example, Buns has a strength of 59. If I equip her with a long weapon, LBE, a holster + pistol, a couple of grenades, helmet, flak vest and a rucksack, she is so overloaded that adding ammo to the mix puts her over 100% of carryable weight. While this example may not be exactly correct as I'm doing it from memory, it is close. But surely, no merc in JA2 can stagger along any distance carrying a normal infantryman's load. I'm going to double check this evening, but I'm suspecting that with strenth of 100 a character will be overloaded with:
- helmet
- vest
- LBE
- first aid kit
- two canteens
- two ALICE pack each with two AR magazines and two grenades
- holster, pistol and at least one extra magazine
- M16 with one magazine
- Rucksack with 60 pounds of gear; 40 would be light load and 80 would be heavy, so I'm picking 60
Given that the weights for the various items seems realistic, to the best of my memory, it seems that character strength is undervalued. As it seems unlikely that character strength can be set to over 100, is it possible for one of the coding gurus to somehow adjust the value of strength points vs pounds upward?
