Anyone still play with ironman enabled? Last time I played was with 1.13 single click install. I did the counter attack with many saves and reloads. I do enjoy the large battles, but I can't picture myself trying that with no reloads. Just too many enemies and the battles are such a large time investment, a crash would be a major turn off. I had a similar post and Loucipher gave me some ideas on how to change some of the ini settings.

I want the old game with all the changes from 1.13 that don't change the difficulty level. I remember enjoying a good game on ironman novice, with no reloads. Is there a way to stop enemy re-enforcements while i'm already battle?

I'm really thinking of just going back to 1.12, but I like 1.13.

some more ideas on how to make the progression a little easier so I can roleplay a team of mercs. I already know I'm going to turn that drassen counter attack off. just want an easy game that has moments of "crap I'm gonna die"

I play on Iron Man mode, Expert, JA2 1.13, H.A.M. 3.5, Wild Fire Mod, Smeagols A.I.M. Mod.

If you want the old game without diffuculty changes, just change the settings in your INI file.

ALLOW_REINFORCEMENTS = FALSE

By the way, the Drassen counter attack is turned off by this:

STRATEGIC_EVENT_SEND_TROOPS_TO_DRASSEN = FALSE

Since you are interested in a more RPG feel here are some additional ideas:

Enemy weapon choices depend on game progress, meaning in the beginning the enemies have pistols and shotguns, while at the end they have hi tech assault rifles etc. To slow down the progression, meaning delay the high tech weapon drops you can use this setting:

SLOW_PROGRESS_FOR_ENEMY_ITEMS_CHOICE = TRUE

I believe there are a total of four weapon caches in the game, usually only one is activated randomly, to enable all weapon caches use the below setting. Don't worry, the weapon caches don't have super good / game imbalancing equipment, so enabling all of them won't result in a Mounty Haul campaign.

ENABLE_ALL_WEAPON_CACHES = TRUE

The game randomly picks some terrorists, meaning you won't get all of them, the below setting gives you all terrorists.

ENABLE_ALL_TERRORISTS = TRUE

Another note, some of my friends started their first game on Novice with Bobby Ray's on the lowest setting (and also non Sci-Fi) without realizing that this will result in an exceptionally difficult campaign. This is because neither enemies nor BR will have good equipment to make your life easier. For example ion the first week all you will see is 38 specials (kind of).

If you want a relatively easy campaign with the occasional challenge, then I suggest to use relatively high settings instead as this will result in better equipment making your life easier. For example you can choose Expert, highest Bobby Ray, Sci-Fi etc. and change the INI settings for all the lines with EXPERT* to the values from NOVICE*, for example:

NOVICE_CASH = 45000
EXPERIENCED_CASH = 35000
EXPERT_CASH = 45000 ;originally 30000
INSANE_CASH = 15000

NOVICE_QUEENS_POOL_OF_TROOPS = 150
EXPERIENCED_QUEENS_POOL_OF_TROOPS = 200
EXPERT_QUEENS_POOL_OF_TROOPS = 150 ;originally 400
INSANE_QUEENS_POOL_OF_TROOPS = 8000

NOVICE_INITIAL_GARRISON_PERCENTAGES = 70
EXPERIENCED_INITIAL_GARRISON_PERCENTAGES = 100
EXPERT_INITIAL_GARRISON_PERCENTAGES = 70 ;originally 150
INSANE_INITIAL_GARRISON_PERCENTAGES = 200

and so on...

In general I recommend going with 1.13 as the older versions have way less features and are also more buggy. If you are looking for even more immersion and detail - try WildFire - all maps are hand crafted with great attention to detail, and it is easy to install, you can find very good instructions here.

Those are some great idea's for more role playing. Thanks for taking the time. The Wildfire idea sounds inticing. Thanks Dieter.

That sounds like alot of fun! Do you allow deaths? It really is thrilling to continue on with your game no matter what happens. Making sure you take really good care of your mercs with attention to detail on every piece of gear they equip. It's so much easier to go ahead and use that precious grenade or chem light on a small battle just to keep your mercs safe. Gone are the days where you train your merc till he/she's so tired they pass out. You want your mercs at top performace for the unexpected battle.

I like the idea's of more role playing. An easier game is what I pefer for that. I have played on harder levels but I just find myself either restarting the whole battle, or constantly hitting alt-s and alt-L to postion my mercs a little better.

I wish the game had some experience for allowing deaths. Perhaps a hidden bravery stat to the surviving mercs. X-com apocolypse had a bravery stat; when the guy experienced a panic situation and they didnt panic, the bravery stat increased. With a higher bravery they were less likely to do a panic check. (been meaning to play that game again)

Thanks for your input. Also do you have anymore ideas on a more friendly role play experience. I think it would be great if they had a one-click install for the newcomer/roleplayer ini settings. Or perhaps a small mod just for that.
