hi all this is my first time playing and I have just bought the gold pack.

just a few Qs before i start..

1. I went to install the 1.12 patch but it says I do not have JA2 gold installed...which i do. When I start up JA2 gold it comes up as 1.12 anyway so that means i have it anyway right?

2. Should I install the unoffical 1.13 or just play it as its supposed to be? If it keeps all the core stuff the same but just enhances things for the better then i will probs install it. what do you think? I dont really play games through more than once unless I absolutely love em, so whatever the best version is I will start on.

3. never played a JA before but I like a challenge and am not new to RTS/TBS games. Should I play on experienced? I have heard the game is ridiculously impossible on the hardest mode but that might just be for the expansion..

4. realistic or sci fi? whats the difference..i think aliens n stuff would be a bit silly for a game like this but it defaults to sci fi..

5. when i exit, it says the "JA demo has encountered a problem and needs to close" etc etc...dunno why it says that, is that common?

1 yes , you have 1.12 .
2 stick with 1.12 ( vanilla) till you are really comfortable with the mechanics / gameplay .
3 try any way you want to , then go to experienced .
4 I rarely play sci-fi , there are bugs in the mines and rocket rifles , hardly worth it .
5 yeah , sometimes , don't worry about it .

You should've said "monsters in the mines". The word bug has bad connotations. Wink

This game is the best game of the generation, wonder what took you so long to buy it ^^ got mine years ago

doubt its as good as planescape torment :bow: but yeah i can tell im gonna love it, havent even got onto the main action screen, just messing about reading emails and checking the mercs out. love games with this much detail.

are there any mercs or tips on which mercs are best? or are they all pretty good in their own way and none suck so its all preference? what happens if they die in game, can you ever get em back? i should read the online manual...

true. thats one thing im kinda not sure about tho...i mean if u really like your team members and they have a load of XP or whatever and they die, then surely everyone is just gonna reload a previous save game from 5 mins ago..i can see that happening alot.

Im guilty of that , only if my merc gets badly hurt , or more than 1 other member dies in a battle .
Also I hate replaying a section of game over and over... though sometimes a death in the team keeps concentration up hehehe .

I reloaded a lot, if people get badly hurt or die. But reloading here isn't usually as bad as in other games because:

A) There's a limited amount of mercs, so if you lose too many the game you've just spend a few days on becomes unwinnable...
B) The nature of gunfire in the game is a bit too randomal and can get people killed way too easily. Sometimes.
C) Turn based play means that SOLID tactics can go to hell very quickly - too quickly - so reloading is simply a matter of thinking up a new tactic, which is why I play the game in the first place.
D) Reloading and playing the same move again will most likely give you the same result (due to the non-random number generator). So usually you have to go back at least a few turns, and try something else, so it doesn't really feel like cheating.
E) The game is long, and on high difficulty levels it's really hard, so unless you reload - prepare to meet a lot of disappointment.
F) Games are supposed to be fun AND challenging. Not one OR the other.

If you really want to play a non-reloadable game, try one of the roguelike RPGs, like ADOM, Angband or Nethack.

Note the "my few immortals" part. Purty flexible, I'd say.
I could waste more than half A.I.M. stuff, all M.E.R.C. losers, plus a few RPCs to kill Deidranna. But hey, I killed her, so I won, right?

As I majorly suck at JA2 I am really guilty at reloading if a certain merc dies such as the ones I make. A few AIM mercs I care about but I don't care if anyone else gets thrown into a torture chamber and get their heads blown up.

Not that I let that happen to them of course.
