I'll start a new thread instead of pulling out an old one. Recently I finally finished SOG '69 and it was a great experience. Becoming X worked around JA2s limitations to provide a unique experience, it really feels like the Vietnam war or rather Vietnam war movies. He based it on the TV series Tour of Duty and you soon collect your own squad of soldiers, all with their own voice overs. Unlike UB it's a really long campaign with a lot of variety, sometimes fighting along larger groups or moving into some claustrophobic tunnels.
A few tips from me, also a reaction to some criticism in other posts (though that's been taken care of by others):
- Maybe start alone with just your IMP character (or any AIM member you think would do well in Nam). In Tay Nihn base (I/H11) you'll "collect" your squad. Sneak past the opponents at night to get there alone (if you are a chicken like me).
- You can also recruit Tex in I10 if you like. He's extremely funny and useful, but he doesn't quite fit in with the theme of this mod.
- Don't worry about the starting sector still being the original UB sector, as soon as you move on you'll see the effort that's gone into this mod.
- In the US bases you'll find a ton of stuff, sometimes over 400 objects. Guns, ammunition, equipment and rations which are actually health and energy boosters, so many that they can make the game too easy. Don't forget it's UB, you have all the time in the world anyway to heal your boys.
- What works extremely well is the problem US guns vs Vietcong guns. The US guns are usually better but there's only so much ammunition you can take with you and the opponents will only drop their equipment so you'll have to decide (over and over again even) if you should switch or not.
- You'll find more help in this subforum, of course. But basically, to progress you'll have to find the passwords to 3 sectors (G11, D9 and I3). Those you'll actually have to unzip outside the game (JA2 Unfinished Business/Data/Campaigns/Vietnam SOG '69), those are password protected zips. Then restart the game and the new sector/map can be visited.
