I've recently rediscovered JA2, now with 113 and HAM installed. I'm impressed.

One thing I've noticed though is that I keep using the same Mercs. And I think I've figured it out: I'm addicted to high Agility. I'm willing to compromise om most abilities, but not on AG. I'll hesitate to hire any Merc < 80 and any Merc < 70 is a knockout criterium. And AG doesn't grow in a natural fashion.

Marksmanship grows quickly in a natural way and can be mitigated through auto-weapons and attachments. Wisdom is only useful in a secondary manner (increases learning rate), but does nothing for me in battle. I don't rate DX as a high import stat, nor is strength and health (up to a certain bare minimum limit of course). Mech, Med, Expl, Leadership, well, I only need one specialist per team max (though more is nice).

Agility on the other hand... It's not the hit percentage that matters, but the amount of bullets you can unleash!

So far, Raven gets hired a lot due to her being a special case, Buns I'm barely comfortable hiring due to "low" agility and Barry is the lowest I've willingly hired at all (as a starting lockpicker).

I'm going to have to force myself to use other Mercs with lower AG. But in the meantime, am I overvaluing AG?

I think it depends on play style, agility is also one of the most important stats to me. But on the other hand, so is strength. For example I usually have one merc using an HK21E (that's the 7.62 variant) and that thing plus ammunition is heavy. Bull currently does that job, and it is an important one, while Buzz couldn't do that. He doesn't have to move a lot though.

Best thing to have is both high strength and high agility, but I see it as a trade off. Strong mercs go with heavier hitting weapons and most important, heavy weapons. I never saw low agility as a real drawback if a merc is strong.
Wisdom also depends on play style, if you train your mercs a lot, it surely helps. For combat mercs I don't care, I just let them run and shoot.

Dexterity and mechanics come with repairing stuff, and it can be pretty bad if a gun jams on a merc and he can't unjam it due to his low mech skill. With all that autofire in HAM, I cursed Buzz more than once for not being able to unjam her gun. When push comes to shove I noticed that every skill can be important.
In the end, it's also a matter of how many mercs you are using and what for. I've maxed out to 32, a few died along my way and so I have to find specific roles for my guys to be useful.

I currently don't have a dedicated heavy weapons user; so I just carry the important-but-not-in-a-firefight stuff in a backpack (ARUC or TIMS) and drop the stuff if I get in a fight. High strength helps, but is not yet limiting (though getting close with lots of heavier rifles and grenades).

I believe in specialists who can operate in the field; so the high MED/DEX merc will be the doc, etc, but any merc must be able to hold his own in a firefight and my limited experience says that firing more bullets is the key defining factor. And having more base-APs (high AGI) is always good; high STR only helps if you want to carry loads.

A field specialist with secondary skills is of course preferable, but I currently lean towards field specliasts without a secondary skill and away from field generalists (if this makes any sense).

On the more strategic level: training is purely on the job unless the mercs are waiting for something else to happen. I'm hired to do a job, and the job isn't to create a Mercenary training camp Smile

Here is how APs are calculated in case this helps you guys (link is here):

AP = 5+ (((10 * Level + 3 * Agility + 2 * LifeMax + 2 * Dex) + 20) / 40)

(I got this somewhere from this forum actually, possibly Headrock).

About interrupts: I played last night and had just cleaned out all bugs and was "around the corner" of the bug queen, I had (among others) Buns (level 5) and Meltdown (level 9) with me. I was off turned based and stepped forward with Meltdown, who always interupted the queen and got to kill her. Reload and tried the same with Buns, who *never* got the interrupt. (When Buns killed the queen she gained a level, Meltdown got nothing.)

Short story is that your level probably has the largest impact on most things throughout the game. You can find more "evidence" of this in Headrock's How To guids here.

LifeMax is connected to your Health-stat I presume? I may need to rethink my IMP-stats then Smile

Yah, I think they are identical maybe? Not super sure if there is a technical difference within the code, but I always thought your maximum health when you are fully healed *is* LifeMax. Maybe someone is around to confirm that? Also you can probably get more info from Headrock's How Tos, they are pretty detailed.
