Gus or Magic? Who's better in your opinion?[message #264898]

After using both on the same team, I've completely reversed from considering Gus the best merc in the game to considering Magic better.

Reasoning? Magic has higher stats than Gus in most categories. I went from using Gus as a sniper to using Raven as a sniper and Gus as a medic/mortar guy, and I gave Magic the Steyr I found at Tixa.

So what are your opinions?

For reference, I'm talking about vanilla JA2 here...I have yet to play 1.13.

I don't use too many MERC personnel...I'm all-too-happy to spend the money on Gus or Magic when I have enough mine income per week to pay for my entire team and then some. I also don't use mechanical or medical mercs once I've taken Cambria because of Perko's shop and the hospital. Costs a little money, but I have enough disposable income to pay for it.

I focus on marksmanship and explosives for later mercs, which is why I like Gus, Magic, and Raven.

come on, you are a mercenary - you are not in arulco to win a war, you're there to make money, as much money as you can get.

this customer of yours doesn't dare to say a word after the first few days - and if he does tell him you lost some men - what can he say with that jerk of his in rubbletown who lost 30 men in not more than a month.

if you hire those guys like gus and ... (what was the other's name again?) they might eventually win that war for you - and that is damned bad for your business.

Razor and Gasket would be a bit to hardcore, but otherwise the same for me. I think I had hired neither Gus nor Magic ever. I love to start with low grade mercs and have them leveling up. At the time I can afford these double plus platinum mercs, my starting team usually is at least as good as them, if not better.

The only "expensive hobby" I have in this respect is Ivan, whom I hire when having Igor and/or Grunty on the team. With the trailerpark-connection (Grizzly, Fox, Bull) Wolf also is a must-have for me, but he still is bargin compared to those two.

I once had Scope for a longer campaign when running an all-girl team - her "Coooooomandeeer" shouting realy went on my nerves. And recently I had hired Shadow as 'military advisor' for the rebels' squad. His preformance cerainly not was worth 6x more than, say Grunty's services.

I also really like his speeches (german). OC, for a serious play-through he's too expensive.

Not in my JA. In the German version she says something like "I would better be in a team that could be learning something from me".

Probably a general problem with people not agreeing which merc to like and which to hate: the different lines, and different voice acting, make complete different characters. Another example would be Ira: People often complain her ugly voice and heavy accent. In the German version she has a rather dark voice and does not speak any accent of note (different to Raven BTW, who's voice actor clearly is from somewhere around Cologne).

Someone I had fired after some days because I couldn't stand his voice anymore was Tex. He is supposed to be a Japanese, but is shouting around in a very poor imitation of an Italian accent.

Magic has better stats, but Gus is so much cooler, so I hire him, I mean come on, he is our commander from JA:DG! How awesome is that, plus I always crack up when he calls me woody, woodman, woodpile...or when how he screams DANG! for everything.
I hire Magic , too, for DG memories, but somehow he used to be much cooler in DG than in JA2, not sure why.
