Has anyone successfully beaten JA2 1.13 and taken every sector on INSANE MODE "WITHOUT" cheating? I have honestly tried every combination of taking sectors but dont have enough money or people to cover the ridiculous amout of enemy counter attacks. Eventually I cheat with the money code to at least give me a bit of a crutch. Just wondering if anyone has a suggestion for a sequence i should follow....

There is no way to make the game easyer by taking cities in a specific order. Whatever you hold will attract the hordes of enemies. It's in general a good idea to take cities that are closer to already held cities first, such as taking Cambria or Alma after conquest of Drassen, not Chitzena. But that's it.

Otherwise, enemy counterattacks will only start in ernest after completly taking a city; setting aside roaming patrols. So in case you already can recruit militias before taking the last sector of a city, do so. This can give you the vital edge over the first stack of enemies.

I attack night time the area's connected to the city, to minimize enemy troops, win time to train militia.
That's why i love Hamous & Monk with the Scout ability.

Yes. That would be me. It was actually on Insane + Iron Man. Well, thats not 100% true, I was forced to give up before taking the very last sector - Meduna palace. Encountered fatal bug which I was unable to sidestep. Version 3356.

It was interesting experience to say the least. Took more than two months of RL intense gaming. Yeah, I figure I'm insane, so I might as well play on insane mode Smile Still have saves & screens. The only REALLY painful fights are the very first two or so battles. Many reloads. Much bigger issue tho was fighting all the bugs (and I don't mean the insects).

Sure. Lets see... Disclaimer: other ways are probably doable and MIGHT be more efficient.

1) Make IMP - NO + AW.
2) Hire Wolf /w equipment for one day. Decent weapon and IIRC tool kit + 1st aid kit.
3) Clear the first sector. Reload until you get a (any) 5.56 AR.
4) Get Ira.
5) Travel to San Mona. Avoid all encounters.
6) Do all San Mona quests. this will net you 25K.
7) Rehire Wolf for as long you can (IIRC one week).
Cool Travel to Estoni. Avoid all encounters. Get Maddog.
9) Move to Cambria. Attack at night.
10) Defent Cambria until you have 100% loyalty and full militia. In the meantime, get Vince and Razor. This squad of six will let you hold Cambia. Sit there until you have the whole squad fully equipped. You are looking at around two to three months of in game time.
11) ...

Fell free to ask.

Cheers,

- Vilik

Cheating: Is hire Shadow for 1 or 2 day(s) for his Colt M16A4 SAM-R for my Sniper IMP and send him get Maddog and find Hamous?

At night i go knock down some for weapons as long as they not find the dead corps.
Ooh and i hired Barry for another 90 days now, kept him out of levelup quests (lvl 2 5,500 for every 2 weeks).
He beats Trevor in a long run.

Or try to get Dynamo for free, but he aint that smart as Barry. (Engineer too)

To me Barry is an absolut must-have, at least when playing the WF maps where everything is locked and trapped. He is at 100 DEX, EXP and MEC in no time. I also use him a lot in battle and to teach the others EXP, so some 70+ LDR and a decent MRK is no problem either. Not to mention leveling... And all that to a rather discount price.

Mad rush? Not really. Playing insane is more like precision excersise in planning and execution on both strategic and tactical level. That plus repeating failed attempts (read: reloading). More so on iron man.

BTW forget mobile militia. Utterly useless and total waste on funds.

On 1.13 (v. 3356 at least) they start to regulary drop off enemy soldiers once you achieve certain coolness level. Don't ask what number is that tho. This MIGHT be setting dependant. I think I had both "sci-fi" and "tons of guns" enabled.

Ive beaten the game on Insane once but towards the end I gave up all the sectors that had no mines or that I had mined dry, except for the fuel depot. Defending against mass enemies isn't hard as long as you know some tricks against them - one mortar man stunlocking the whole enemy teams makes militia easily finish them all off. Also there's some choke points - the hospital back door, the front of the base in Alma, or just sniping off the roofs in various places. At the end I just gathered a team of mercs that I had freed of their duty, got them into the hummer with a ton of ammo and supplies and just drove straight from the East side to Meduna.

Overall Insane is mostly a test of patience - it took me about 2 months to do it and progress was very slow at times.

Mission accomplished?

3 Days, stealth team killed that nice lady.
Clear sector by sector or dodge by day and sleep.

I played 1 version (not WF) where the Queen didnt knew Merc where in Arulco.
I never killed all in a secter or get noticed.

I'm currently doing an insane run as well.
30 in-game days and holding Alma and Drassen currently. You get counterattacked continuously, and im currently spending all the hard-earned cash on militia trainers and training.
It's going well so far but im curious on how things will go once i take more cities... my hands are full with just 2 cities as it is.

What i did was:
- Start of with my Sniper/Teaching IMP and hire Wolf and Grunty for one day.
- Got a moisin nagant in the first fight and went to Drassen. Took the mine and the middle sector.
- Hired Biff & Flo, picked up Dimitri and went to San Mona. Did all the quests for some cash
- Turned out Grunty had to be in divorce court and didn't want to extend his contract. I hired Bull and Grizzly and MD as a doc
- Took the airport sector in drassen... got chased out by the elite swarm a day later
- Went back at night and killed the elites. Then i went to build up militia
- Cleared the NE SAM, then plundered Balime for some cash, a hummer and the chalice.
- Went to alma after that. Got raider and conrad for training stuff. Got gasket and bubba for repairs.
- Then did all the side locations like Tixa, Orta and the Crepitus. Also killed Kingpin because i stole his money

Insane mode can be tedious at times, because it's definitely more defense oriented then the other difficulties. With the mine income and selling to Tony, you can get by but yeah, all the resources still pretty much go to training militia.
Im going to take Cambria next, im probarly gonna hire Biggins from MERC as a new trainer to keep the militia production up.

Yo InstantKarma, You are doing all the tricks I can think of. On Insane you get a lot of gun drops, even with drop all turned off, keep selling these to Tony, this is an additional $15k per day.

Not sure if you realized this, mentioning just in case, the purpose of militia is to allow your mercs to leave the sector to engage in other activities without high risk of losing the sector.

Knowing this, if you keep all your mercs in the same sector where you train militia, you might not take advantage of what militia was intended to do for you and could get "stuck" in an endless cycle of training and recovering from attacks.

You will notice that the queen's attention may shift to different cities once you liberate them. This is intentional to free up your militia trainers from previous sectors so you can move them to the new sector.

Giving unlimited resources in resource based games such as Starcraft, Warcraft, Dawn of War etc. will make the game a breeze to walk through, and you probably finish fairly quickly with relatively little push back.

JA2 is not completely resource based, you still need to win in tactical combat, however you can make this quite easy as well with state of the art equipment.

Thanks for the advice Dieter, but i did read somewhere that in 1.13 it's possible to actually train veteran militia as well?
Because all i get are mobile militia for 2250.. does the veteran training just become enabled when theres enough mobile militia around?

As for shifiting cities, im controlling Drassen and Alma right now and both of them seem to be getting an equal amount of counterattacks.
I suppose i'll take cambria soon and see what happens....

IIRC unless you edit the .ini, the Queen has unlimited soldiers for counterattacks on insane. You need to be prepared to guard every single important location (i.e. cities, SAMs and others like Tixa).

What you do is actively intercept moving enemy soldiers.

For example: First you take Cambria and leave one squad there to train militia and protect it. You hire another squad, take Drassen and protect it. Then you are ready to take Alma, but you dont want to / cant hire another squad. You move the Drassen squad to Alma. Enemy soldiers going for Drassen have to pass by Cambria or Alma - you actively intercept them.

Vehicles are pretty much a must as is the knowledge of enemy movement patterns.

Thanks for the info Vilik.
But why would i bother training militia in Tixa? I didn't even know this was possible... but there's nothing worth defending in Tixa afaik?

I've enabled the training of veteran militia btw. It definently makes life a bit easier. Now im just making sure every town and SAM is fully defended until my main squad is of to do other things.

Holding Tixa or Orta indeed would be pointless.

Otherwise intercepting enemy assault forces indeed is important. Whenever you have the opportunity you should rather sally from a threatened town than waiting for the enemy to attack and giving him a chance to kill militias. A minimum would be to be present with at least one merc to have the battle taking place in tactical not autoresolve. In most occasions the militia achieves better results when defending a place that way. This of course also depends on the map in question; for example on the Wildfire maps all SAMs are very easy to defend: a well placed single merc with a good weapon can easyly take out a dozend attackers while the militia usually has no trouble to deal with the rest of the enemies.

As soon as you have more cities than you can defend with your team, while at the same time being able to preform offensive operations, you should also have lots of money. In this situation I usually hire a paratrooper squad (SAS = Special Air Service). They are stationed at a central place with the helicopter, for example in Estoni. Their task is to intercept all enemy assault forces that are to far away for the main team; and if that's not possible, to at least reinforce the militia in threatened sectors. Because that often includes to attack 32 enemies with 6 mercs at full daylight the "SAS" squad cannot be composed of guys like Hamous and Shank, but rather of Lynx and Scope.

Mobile militia on the other hand is a complete waste of time and money. At best they are able to reduce moving enemy forces, but in most occasions they won't do anything for you and are by guarantee always on the other side of a town under attack.

the scorpion
i find tixa strategically useful. you can have a team with vehicle there, catching nearby patrols (on the west-east road) in the sector where they generate most l00t or the biggest challenge, you are fast in balime, estoni and the crossroads at k6 (or such) without reqiring the helicoper.

once the road west-east is revealed, you can see enemy forces approach anyway.

Actually defending it however... meh. Not much fun. a common tactic is to use mines and such, but i'd rather catch the enemy patrols in other sectors.

Using Tixa that way is rather pointless because the desert to the north requires you to use the heli to quickly get back to Cambria. Most enemy forces march through Estoni and then past Cambria, if not already targeting it. Forces marching to Balime usually take the coastal road and would that way be out of reach for a troop placed at Tixa too. Not to mention Grumm. Only those with destination Alma always use the desert road.

The best place for an interception force with vehicles would be Cambria: You can intercept anything coming up from Estoni. You can reinforce Alma before any assault force can reach it (provided you had cleared up the desert road). And you are quickly in Grumm where you can block any enemy movement to the NW. The only place that cannot be defended by a squad placed in Cambria would be Balime.

Ok, I worded that incorectly. I meant that every "important" location will be under attack indefinitely. And by important I meant cities, SAM sites and some other - like Tixa.

Which ones you defend is up to you and of course defending Tixa is pointless, unless you simply want experience and / or loot.

Some more relevant info:

In my last Insane game, I was planning for three independent combat capable squads.

The first one sits in Cambria. It is motorized (hummer or truck) and can intercept everything between Tixa - north border of Meduna - east border of Grumm. Nothing gets past Cambria. Cambria SAM is empty.

Once you are ready for the second, it clears Drassen and then moves to Alma. It is also motorized and can intercept everything between Tixa - Balime - Alma. Nothing gets past Alma. Drassen and Drassen SAM are empty.

Once you are are ready for third, it clears Chitzena and Grumm. Can use heli and intercepts everything moving around Grumm. Chizena and Chizena SAM are empty.

Then you simultaneously push for Meduna.

Point being: counterattacks are infinite and you need to plan for them (some can be ignored - for instance Tixa ones).

Cheers,
- Vilik

I start a new game with 1 team.
I gonna play it by the book, like you play it like its the first time.
Take Ira(Letter)and find Father Walker.

1] Get Drassen, get information about the pilot and search him.
Take the Sam Site.

Get information from locals about Alma, San Mona (Weapons Dealer)

Skyrider talks later about the Hospital in Cambria...
There the local talk about about other locations...
Also you find that Repair dude that talks about Fredo in Grumm...

You all know the story.

This will be hard on Insane Smile

Problems with that will be:

1) Drassen counterattack

- you either do not take whole Drassen, which in turn will hurt your income or you will have pretty tough battle on your hands at this point in game (and thats an understatement)

2) supplies problem

- to hold a city you will have to continuously repair a bunch of gear, only option of getting supply of tool kits is to take the airport, which means you either take whole Drassen (see above) or you dont take the middle sector of Drassen, which will hurt your ability to defend it effectively with militia

3) mercs shortage

- by taking Drassen you get Dimitri and thats it

Suggestion: take Cambria first

1) there is no counterattack of the scale of Drassen

2) there is merchant that sells tool kits (among other things)

3) there are several free / cheap mercs in or around Cambria: Vince, Maddog, Dynamo, Shank, possibly Hamous (plus truck + Tixa quest = mobility, which you will need ASAP)

Cheers,
- Vilik

Yes, i'm aware of this all.

I played alot games.
Just wanna try this one.
Controle the Norht East corner, with Sam Site.

Drop (helicopter) a team every night in enemies sectors that close to Drassen.
I have a scout checking the area's.
Lucky i found Devin in Drassen.

Still camping in Drassen Smile

Some kind boring, but somehow it's fun.
