Hello, I've been a forum lurker for a while, but came up of my peeping hole out of the need to have this question answered.

The reason I have been going on/off with JA2 its because I can't play mods separately. For example, is it possible to have Urban Chaos, Deidrana Lives! and 1.13 with different .exe's so that progress and content of each mod is independent of one another?

I had 1.13 (great work btw, kudos for the new release coming too!), and decided to try Deidrana Lives! I assumed it was create a different .exe for that mod but I've found that because DL mod installed its files directly into my JA2 folder, now when I run my usual JA2 gold .exe, it runs the DL mod instead, but I have the saved games from 1.13.

Anyone have a solution?

Original Urban Chaos and Diedranna Lives! are pre-source code, so you have to keep them in separate installs from each other, and from v1.13 which is a based on the source code release a few years ago.

v1.13 has a Virtual File System controlled by an entry in an .ini file. Consequently multiple mods built for a similar revision of v1.13 can share one install. To make it even easier, for several versions, v1.13 includes an INI Editor that makes game selection a simple matter of selecting the right VFS file from a drop down menu. For instance, Urban Chaos-1.13 v3.09c, if installed properly will allow you to play UC-1.13, the stock v1.13 campaign with extend stuff, and a vanilla variation of v1.13 from one install while keeping the save games, IMP profiles, other settings separate.

I haven't gotten around to reviving Diedranna Lives!-1.13, probably will do so once UC-1.13 v3.50 is out in about a months time. When I do so, it will be an add-on to UC-1.13 so it can share some resources (item graphics), but campaign data, save games and the like will be kept separate (well the intention is that they stay separate, I cannot help a botched install).

EDIT: I forgot to mention, the v1.13 mod must be put together with VFS in mind for the above to work. If the mod just dumps its contents into one of the main Data directory then VFS does not matter and you are back to separate installs. My projects use VFS to keep resources and customization independent, I cannot speak for anyone else's mod.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

Now, how do I go about doing the separate installs? Do I just copy the entirety of my JA2 gold folder into another folder and install a mod there and do the same for every mod I wanna keep separate thereafter?

Also, where is this VFS application thing located in my JA2-1.13 folder and how do I modify it so that the game only runs the mod or mod merge that I want? Does this work for every mod? That is, so long as I have this VFS and for whatever mod install in my original JA2 gold folder I will always be able to handpick which mod/modcombo I want to run?

If you are wanting separate installs, do a clean install of JA2 Gold and copy the folder as many times you need. JA2 does not leave registry entries.

If you are wanting to have one install of JA2 to run JA2 v1.13 revision 4057 and UC-1.13 v3.09c, don't use the JA2.exe, launch the game from the INI Editor.exe. Note, this last part is only valid for the revision history I have specified.
