Camo reduces your visibility when in "rough" terrain. Luckily the definition of rough terrain is pretty broad....basically everything except indoors and pavement. It makes it harder for the enemy to spot you, especially when you are prone.

Stealing is the art of taking stuff from the enemy (or sometimes from civilians) by clicking on them with the "hand" cursor. Right click to bring up the popup menu, select the hand cursor, then click on the enemy. If you have enough AP, you will move next to him and steal his weapon. This works best if the enemy is unconcious since otherwise there is a good chance you will fail. Note that stealing will NOT WORK if you begin next to the victim. In these cases, move away one tile, then click on him with the hand cursor. Your merc will move in and steal. This bug is similar to the one where you cannot refuel a vehicle if you start next to it.

Also you must have a free large slot in your inventory (plus having a pistol in the second hand helps too), due to a coding bug identified by Chris Camfield himself.

Thanks, that might explain the occasions when I thieved unsuccesfully while afterwards there were goodies on the corpse.

since all mercs can steal, what does the stealing skill (actually it's called Thief) do?

the way I keep hearing it explained makes it sound like it does absolutely nothing since everyone can already steal.

Not sure, but I think it makes it possible to steal if the enemy is not unconcious. Well, actually I think that anyone *can* steal from concious enemies, but the odds are very low.

For instance, I've heard of mercs stealing the tank cannon or LMGs out of a tank (never done it myself though)...

Certainly though, it's not what you might consider a prime skill.

I seem to recall reading you can steal by shooting an opponent in the legs then clicking on them using the hand icon. The game will seem to pause for a while but you have a chance of getting something from the fallen merc. Of course, they will be back on their feet and shooting back at you soon after - unless you steal their weapon.

I always found stealing very useful in early on in the game, when rifles and other good weapons were unobtainable. However, its always very risky..too much of a chance of an unconcious enemy waking up and blowing you away.

My favorite duo for stealing was always Blood and Grizzly with a crowbar. Grizzly beats the guy senseless, and Blood steals and hopefully gets an interrupt if the guy comes to.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try punching the enemy one extra time after he falls down and he'll always stay down.

I've stolen the claws off a BloodCat - then sliced it up with them! {unlike the bodyparts dropped by dead cats, the stolen ones can be wielded like a combat knife, they're almost as deadly}

1)Not every merc can steal well.High dexterity and mechanics are required,(and good wisdom plus high experience level is always good),especially for elites.Trevor and Magic, when I used them, always made it: 100% percentage. Not the case for Cliff, who in spite of that "THIEF" skill has still low dexterity.
On the other hand,Blood ,for example, exasperated me a couple of times...Boy,in Wildfire I hate receiving the "X failed to steal the SVD(with sniper and laser scope, plus bipod)" message in G9 Cambria,on day one, before 15.00 hours. It's always there, a regular on top of Keith building has it.
Same goes for the RPK with sniper scope attached that can be stolen in the weapon stash sector, wherever that is.
Without stealing skill,or high mechanics and dexterity you always fail to steal the cannon from the tanks, too.

2)The stealing(thief) skill in Wildfire, unlike Bane said, enables the merc(Cliff, Flo, for example),to steal also from the small pockets. That is extremely useful early on,when you need first aid kits, exotic ammo or lockpicking kits, for example.

Dunno how you play, but what I usually do in Wilfire is: hire Magic,Reaper,Shadow,Lynx,Ice,Blood,Wolf,Fox,Grizzly,Spider for one day, without equipment(the only exception being Shadow, with his unique P90) and create an electronics/something(N.O. or teaching, usually) IMP char-just to have all the skills available, now that Lynx changed from electronics to auto weapons.I find that metal detector that an electronics char comes with extremely useful, and the char's MRK is set to 80 in order to get the Mini 14.

With this complete team I take all the five towns with mines on day one, stealing from every unfortunate opponent I encounter.Money is no problem, and contracts are extended indefinitely afterwards.

Yeah, stealing is an art...Staying hidden after a wall, close to the corner, getting the interrupt on the inquisitive bastard and punching him always pays off,as a tactic.
By 23.59 on day one all my mercs are fully equipped and have all the possible attachements on the weapons...

Flo comes in just to have the complete collection of skills,on day 2,and is mainly used as Miguel&Carlos recruiter and weapons seller.

My hand to hand IMP characters never had a problem with stealing. Arm him with a crowbar, and he can knock someone out in one hit.

And Dr. Q always seemed to be very very good at it, for some reason. He's the first person I ever stole items with. I always stole pistols (often diffrent types) and duel weilded them, despite his bad marksmanship XD.

And.. yeah. It really makes a lot more sense to forcibly take their weapons after you beat them to the ground.

Only sad thing is, I haven't found a good way to take stuff from my own militia.

to Idkfa. That sounds really neat! I've seen stuff like that. The weapons that bloodcats and those nasty bugs use are actually ingame items o.o

On day 1 when you have pistols only, stealing is a must. After winning Drassen and Chitzina, I gradually got plenty of MiniM14 or equivalents so I stop doing so. Maybe with Flo I will try it again to see how she do it.

The computer seems to think a lot when you are stealing (perhaps it does not want to lose its precious rifles Very Happy )

About "the computer taking time": pressing alt+enter (or Ctrl+enter ?) when that hourpiece appears makes it disappear.

Sometimes when I steal the pistol/gun winds up on the floor, beneath my merc.
...and then I can steal another from the target again. (works 3 times max)

Yeah... Stealing from councious enemies works too, well at least sometimes it does. It helps a lot if you punch or shoot them once or twice first, it's pretty useless to try to take a gun from unharmed enemy soldier. Once I took out the last enemy in Omerta (played solo) by punching him once, took the SPAS-15 out of his hands and blasted his face in next turn (after dodging couple pathetic punches). Poor guy... got killed by his own gun.

Gotta try that Alt+Enter thing, goddamn it's annoying to wait the time to pass when cursor locks up.

Hmmm... they should add the possibility to try to jam the enemy's gun when fighting hand-to-hand in JA3 (if/when it comes out). Dismantling opponent's pistol ain't probably a bad idea if one gets in such CQB situation. Or even add the whole gun dismantling/gun assembling concept in the game.

Yesterday-eve Grunty knocked down a redshirt in Omerta and took his gun.

-Grunty has stolen the .45
-Grunty has gained a point of strength

That's what it said, in that order, steal then strength-up.

Had me thinking that perhaps it's just 'grabbing and pulling' till the opponent let's go, which would also explain why it's easier if their knocked out.
