WHat do I do when I recieve an error message about the Data\Ambient.slf file it says it can not initialize library [Data\Ambient.slf] in profile[SLF Libs], path [Data\Ambient.slf]

Looks like jubberish to me can anyone please help?

It happens everytime I install it. JA2 1.12 works just fine but no matter what version of 1.13 I install I get the same error. Should I manually install it instead of doing the one-click installers? Do you know where I can find a good working copy of the newest release because I have downloaded the one from the link here and no matter how many times I install it I get the same problem. Any help?

You should just get a clean install of Jagged Alliance 2 first.
Then, copy Ambient.SLF
Next, paste Ambient.SLF in your current install folder in the Data folder.

tao, there is not one *.slf that comes from 1.13 - the ambient.slf that works with vanilla is THE SAME ambient.slf that does not work with 1.13

thescheaver, have you tried redownloading that sci - they normally do work - you could also pm tais (he makes them)

Go to vfs_config.JA2113 and check if you have this:

[LOC_Ambient]
TYPE = LIBRARY
PATH = Data/Ambient.slf
VFS_PATH = Ambient.slf
MOUNT_POINT =

If it will be ok,then something with AMBIENT file,here,i can provide you 1,its not very big in size,just replace the current with this 1

its just in case,maybe something will work out.I had the same problem with ANIMS,a guy gave me his ANIMS.SLF and all got fixed.Lets see if it will work on Sheaver

@sheaver: which language version of ja2 do you have?
which language version of 1.13 did you install?

another question: did you install ja2 in a folder path which contains "umlaute" or special character? I am asking because of the utf 8 error message.

- which language version of ja2 and 1.13 are you using?
- which operating system (which language version) are you using? (32 or 64 bit)?

EDIT: There are 2 more things you can try out:

1.) Edit the ja2.ini and set VFS_NO_UNICODE = TRUE, save it and try to run the game
2.) Set the "ja2.exe" to Windows XP compatibility (right click on the file -> Properties -> Compatibility) then try to run the game

I have the error with Ambient.slf also.

It seems to be missing from any fresh install of vanilla JA2 I make.

This does not cause an error in the base game, but causes 1.13 to crash.

Last time I needed to fix this problem I downloaded the file that someone mentioned a few posts back. Unfortunately this file is on Megaupload and therefore now inaccessible.

Could someone please put this file up somewhere or send me a copy?

I would be very grateful!

Thanks for the help Schein!

I created the account years ago so I could search the forum. I have played through JA many times since then, I just have had nothing much to say Smile

Anyway, I downloaded the file and pasted it in the Data subdir. The good news is that fixed the error message I was receiving. The bad news is I now get the following:

Could not initialize library [ Data\BattleSNDS.slf ] ...

I don't know if other are missing.

I currently have the following SLF files in my Data subdir:

AMBIENT.SLF ANIMS.SLF BIGITEMS.SLF BINARYDATA.SLF CURSORS.SLF DATA.SLF
FACES.SLF FONTS.SLF INTERFACE.SLF LAPTOP.SLF LOADSCREENS.SLF MAPS.SLF
MERCEDT.SLF NPCDATA.SLF RADARMAPS.SLF TILECACHE.SLF TILESETS.SLF

I have installed from the file I am using many times, but maybe it has become corrupted over the past year.

I might just purchase a new copy on Steam (maybe?).

Hi Nathan,

Too bad I couldn't help you to solve your problem. Yes, you are probably right with your assumption that your JA2 game got somehow damaged because as far as I see there are a few other .slf files missing apart from BattleSNDS.slf and some of them like Npc_speech.slf or Speech.slf are elementary necessary for playing.

Anyway, I hope you can play JA2 soon again! :crossed:

Pls. do tell some more about your system like which version of win exactly, which online service you purchased from (e.g. steam), the complete path to your JA2 installation (i.e. is it in 'program files' or the like?), which version of 1.13 etc.
