I decided to start new thread in order to discuss and eventually carry out the task of creating new smoke effects that could be used to replace vanilla smoke (from smoke grenades etc.).

Personally I really dont like vanilla smoke, it dosent look natural at all. Blender has really nice smoke simulation, I could set it up to generate a smoke. I already played around with it and I managed to get really nice mortar explosion effect, but my PC fried. Creating simple smoke effect wont be hard, all I need is you guys to tell me where is smoke animation located and I will analyze it and prepare a new effect. Then I will render stuff like I did with my test renders of my merc model.

With luck we can get this done in a day or two if we dont run into any big problems.

first: well you can always contact me for STI/animation-based questions, solutions

second: smoke animations are in \Data\TILECACHE there is some sti files for smoke like: SMOKE.sti,TEARGAS.sti etc, every sti file that starts with SMK or ends with Gas is smoke based animation

third:I wanted to change smoke animations too but i am not an artist,so i drew them horribly and just stopped making them

Good luck making new smoke effects Wink

Nice one Taro, almost all of the effects are looking very dated and any improvement would be welcome. Shame we couldn't have some funky transparency effect to add to the polish. if it's possible.

Small update, I managed to simulate the smoke and bake dynamics, now I need to make it render properly.

Here is one of the frames (out of 60, but not all will be used). Not very visible, but I still need to add materials to it so it will show up in render window.

ANother update, I managed to render the smoke. It didnt go exactly well, but I managed. I already selected 29 frames and edited them in photoshop (cropping, color change, removing background etc.). Now I need telect 10 frames that loop best and import them into STI.

However Im pretty sure that doing this properly will be real pain in the ass.

Here is a preview, I selected every 3rd frame:

I think I failed. After rescaling, my smoke looks like a cream. I will try to do something with this, but I honestly dont belevie I will make something out of this.

Can you put together an animated gif? sort of hard to tell as still images. Looks okay from what I can tell, a little grainy, but so were the originals.
