Well, I stupidly erased all my saves in a mistaken identity folder deleting spree. Which will give me the opportunity to re start the game. Now I know you likes love these types of post so I am going to ask you guys for a few suggestions.

What settings/tweaks do you play with and what is the result of said tweaks?

I play on expert, tons of gun, slow item progression and drop all. I only save outside a battle and exactly at 00:00 everyday, I only keep the last 3 saves.

I don't touch the INI much because I do not know how to mess around with that a lot. This makes the game challenging at the beginning, we have shitty weapons, they have shitty weapons but once in a while they come with heavier guns. Slowly but surely we get their guns and things get even, also my mercs get so good that their counter attacks become routine and easy to fend off/intercept.

I would like to know how I can tweak it while the campaign is in progress to show some sort of escalation in the war. Specifically changing the number of troops, adjusting the type of troops (black shirt/red shirt) and adjusting the interval of her attacks.

I also heard about allowing reinforcements from nearby sectors, no idea how to do that.

Feel free to recommend your own settings as well.

Thanks for your attention.

I'd recommend making a copy of the ini, and then look at it via a text editor...
most of the things you can change are pretty clear.

you can allow the enemy to get reinforcements from any nearby sectors (or city sectors only if you wish)

also you can modify the max number of enemies in a specific group...
the queens troops pool..

you can make your mercs gain attributes slower.. and many many more Smile
actually, most of the things you wish to change, are in the ini... just read through it patiently..

sadly, i don't know if its possible to make that escalation in the war... it gets harder pretty linear (bar the counterattack)

Editing the ini file is relatively simple in a text editor, but it's absolutely cake with the editor that comes with 1.13. Making a backup copy of your ini file before you edit it is a solid recommendation, as always, but the editor makes it pretty impossible to break your game.

Go to your JA2 install directory, and open the INI Editor executable that you will find there.

Once it loads, all you do is open the folders on the left, and click on things to see what options there are. The right hand side of the editor gives you a description on what an option can do, and allows you to make changes.

Once you finish, you just click save, and... well, actually you can launch the game right from the editor, or you can close it and start the game in your regular way.

As for recommendations, I play too many different types of campaigns to really be able to recommend any one option directly, outside of what ini options that I play with.

Recruitment settings:
-I've increased my IMP starting points to 600, and I've raised the max attribute cap to 95. I generally give them max wisdom, and other traits quite a bit lower (but they do learn fast).

Financial settings:
-I always play with the option that enables me to sell items from the sector inventory screen.
-Also see strategic event settings, below.

Tactical Interface settings:
-I play with all hotkeys enabled, like the sunglasses/goggles swap and the one that lets you unload/un-attach all items in the sector.
-I do enable the militia to show me enemies that they've spotted.
-Allow lazy civilians is a must.
-Camouflage mercenary portraits are pretty cool.

Tactical Difficulty settings:
-Reinforcements arrive with 0 AP, true for both enemies and militia

Tactical Suppression Fire settings:
-Overall effectiveness set to 200, for explosives as well.

Strategic Event settings:
-Drassen Counter Attack is always set to on. Razz
-Crepitus disabled... I don't find the battles in the tunnel to be very interesting or fun. I do like the battles in the mines and when the Crepitus enter the town, but I don't find the tradeoff to be worth it.
-Which mine shuts down: I play around with this and the overall financial settings a lot, depending on the feel of each campaign that I play. When I play with drop all on, I often set the mines to only give 80% income, or I schedule an extra mine to close (which actually makes a big difference on your strategic choices, which is pretty fun).

Strategic Gameplay settings:
-Allow reinforcements, in or out of cities, for both enemies and militia.
-Humvee offroad, definitely.
-Vehicle inventory for certain.
-Allow skyrider to land in a hot LZ, yes.
-No enemy detection without recon yes or no, depending on the campaign, again.

Bobby Ray settings:
-No chance of shipment loss. I find it annoying to deal with the thief, and there's no "insurance" option to pay extra for guaranteed delivery, either.

Item Property settings:
-Explosives damage up to 200. I found before that grenades didn't properly kill enemies the way I felt that they should.

Strategic Enemy AI:
-This is the other thing that most impacts each campaign that I start, besides the financial settings. Too many options to specify, but in general I do a lot of tweaking. I generally keep two campaigns going on a given computer at a time, and since you can set things differently for difficulty settings, the campaigns are almost always on different difficulties. As a result of this, whatever difficulty I play on no longer has the same meaning as what someone might be used to.
-In general, I'm between Expert and Insane when determining numbers of troops, and between Experienced and Expert when determining how "tough" the enemy is (how easily they notice you in an adjacent sector, percentage of elites, AP bonuses that they might get, etc.)
-Basically I found the Expert difficulty too easy, but I found Insane too tedious/difficult to slug through, so I've found various compromises between the two. My campaigns generally get harder as I become a better player.

MilitiaTraining/Roaming MilitiaTraining/Movement settings:
-Enable veteran training set to on, but I only ever train enough veterans to have a couple in each city sector. Veterans are TOUGH, even compared to elites, so if you train an entire sector full of them, basically that sector is safe forever.
-Mobile militia training is on, and restrict roaming is set to sectors that I've explored. I don't want roaming militia to win the war for me.

I would recommend reading the (very short) "Merge INI Files.txt" readme in the Docs folder.

Adding "MERGE_INI_FILES = Ja2_Options.ini" to ja2.ini is very neat, and allows you to save only your customized settings to the Ja2_Options.ini in you UserProfile folder -- any other settings will be read from the default file.

Thank you developers: This makes it a lot easier to migrate custom settings between installations or version upgrades!

Thanks for the replies guys. Ryft, your post was insightful.

Now Dansken, or anybody else. I've read that Merge Ini doc and it's clear except that I have no idea what the ja2settings and ja2options do, how they differ from each other and what I could possibly change.

I've been working with the Ini editor and have also opened it in Doc and been trying out a few variations, still have no Idea what the end result will be.

But mainly what I would like is to either be able to tweak the game manually every once in a while to make the queens troops harder. That or making it somehow tweak itself to a higher difficulty in relation to the progress level.

Any pointers?

I don't know if that was already mentioned, have no time to read all replies right now. Anyways:

- have you checked your recycle bin?
- have you tried "undelete" programs to restore deleted data?

These options are often forgotten, yet at least sometimes can save us alot of pain.

Good luck!

So Lockie...

You are saying that doing that will actually apply to the next time I start the game? It will not cause any CTDs?

Easy thing to do is copy your installation as is , rename copy to whatever you like , update ini , play a savegame and see . Take a few minutes only .

Usually a specific ini option will tell you whether or not a new game is required to make use of it. Other times it's obvious.

For instance, if I change the starting funds for a given difficulty, or the starting garrison for the queen, those things only have an impact on a fresh game.

But if I alter the percentage of income that a mine generates, or I give the queen an unlimited pool of troops (or make her troops get more APs, or resist damage more effectively), those changes can immediately impact any game.
